Make-up for no catch-up in December and January?
-
I don't want to sound entitled, but:
If November catch-up lasts through January can we get a month added to our membership, or an extra book credit?
Premium members are paying (book credit +$4) per month, with the $4 going towards access to pre-pubs and the catch-up. If we stop getting a new catch-up the membership value is reduced.
-
November catch-up (with a lot of volumes) was put up with 3 series to last for December, too. (Last I heard at least.) Not to mention all the new LNs and manga that came out in December, and the last LN today.
That said, Sam should be changing it soon for January I think. He probably hasn't just gotten around to it yet.

I'd be less inclined to gripe if I didn't already own all of Smartphone :)
If we do get the January catch-up then never mind.

I wouldn’t say that premium members are paying book credit + $4, I would say they are paying membership fee($4.95) + prepay for 1 credit ($6).
Other then that I wouldn’t call the “catch-up” a part of the membership more just a bonus to some of the newer subscribers.
So since members are paying for access to the prepubs (which include the newest release) & Premium are paying for what members pay plus they prepay for 1 credit, lack of catch up doesn’t devalue the actual membership.
None of this is me saying that catch you should go away by any means

Make-up or not, it's still pretty disappointing to go without a catch-up for another month. I doubt it takes that much time to set up even if you are busy with the move.
-
@novurdim Just pretend it's 3 series you don't want to read and move on with your life :/
I dunno, have you tried running a company while moving to another country? He doesn't just point at 2-3 random series and call it a day, he puts a lot of thought into figuring out which ones haven't been available for a while, which have had new volumes release, whether there are cross-marketing factors in the present or future that would move up or down the chances of that series going on catch up right now, etc.
Yeah, it sucks that you don't have anything to read right now, but throwing shade when you aren't even aware of all the things he has to deal with on a regular basis, on top of now living in a different country and readjusting both his personal and his professional life because of it, is kind of low.

Of course I have, that's why I'm provoking the most obvious and predictable defence force. I have also pretty much read the few JNC series I'm interested in so I'm mostly chipping in just for the sake of it. Fun conversations and all that.
I also know that when you offer a new constant feature, it is henceforth considered a part of the membership even if you yourself consider it as some additional incentive for the new members. So when you suddenly go for several months without this feature (no matter how impossibly hard the rocket science behind choosing the titles is) people are bound to complain. It is absolutely natural and should be perceived as such, this is not a fan site after all where you can just say that life sucks and call it a day.
-
@novurdim I didn't say that no one should complain, I'm saying your attempts to paint the process of assigning catch up series as trivial are not grounded in reality.

Well, trivial or not, I did only say that much time and can repeat that.

I own all of Smartphone AND Arifureta :P
Honestly, there's been that many new releases, combined with all I'm already reading/buying, that the catch up months have fallen off my radar a lot. My usual reaction is "oh, I own both this month" or "oh, only own one this time but I've read that other one already".
I used to be hanging out for them but I've been around long enough to have already read nearly everything I might be interested in, Apocalypse is probably the only series left (I need to see this MC reportedly more dense than the IS one).

Oh he is indeed even more dense. I enjoyed the first 6 or so quite a bit, but after that the writer (to me) is running out of steam and/or going through the motions. Trapped in a successful series.
I only discovered the JNC site late last year and joined in September, so there are still a bunch that I want to be able to read the full first volume before deciding whether or not to keep buying them. On my to-try list are the original Arifureta (and I don't want to read Zero first), Grimgar, Me, a Genius?, Mixed Bathing, "and more!"
It's true that there's been a good number of new #1s for me to try, and thanks to that I'm now buying Jinrou, Seirei Gensouki and Lazy Dungeon Master. But I look at those other series with multiple books out and want that new catch-up month to try some of them.
-
I'm hoping they update catch-up soon, but I appreciated it staying up so I could run through Daimao.
Maybe they could do an "every series is on catch-up" month soon to placate any perturbed customers?
-
How long has this place existed? When's the next yearly anniversary?
I remember I joined right around the 1yr anniversary to binge Grimgar & I think all the other launch titles were unlocked too (wasn't that the first catch up month?)
-
@smashman42 I believe the anniversary is in the fall.
-
Another idea, one that wouldn't cost JNC anything directly:
Have a double catch up month in February with say 6 titles instead of 3.
-
@harmlessdave I'm not against the idea, but that can mess things up too. Sam usually picks series that haven't had a catchup recently. If there are too many series on catchup in a single month, some people can miss a series they wanted to read and now it won't be eligible for a long time.
-
I’ll admit the longer the catch-up titles lag draws out the more of a pain it becomes because there’s really no easy way to recompense the missing months as @myskaros said.
It’s not the end of the world or anything but I do think this recent move to the States emphasizes how JNovel Club has grown big enough that it’s hard for one person to handle it all, even if they’re near superhuman in their work ethic ala Sam.
I was happy to see a project coordinator check in here and Aimee also seems to do a great job handling additional work too and I suspect does more behind the scenes than we realize. I’m excited to JNC grow even more so as it goes along as I want them to be awesome and successful for decades to come.
-
I think catch-up is only a way to shake things up during quiet months without new series or big updates, if he thinks that everyone will be busy with all the new series, he will save those catch-ups for later. And catch-up is not really a perk of having membership anw.
So it may come back next month, if there is nothing going to happen. -
@tgquan67 Well, that, and also moving back to the US, looking for a house to call his own, and finding an official office for JNC. Sam's pretty busy these days.

So it may come back next month, if there is nothing going to happen.I'd consider catch-up really the biggest perk of membership with the release schedule of some titles. It just isn't really that big of a perk for premium members who might end up purchasing most of the books as premium titles.
