@Almond-Magnum I've heard the same things, and repeated them myself after series after series that I enjoyed only got one season to the point I stopped watching anime entirely for four or five years. But recently I've been hearing people say on the internet (without hard sources, of course) that the pendulum is swinging the other way. As demonstrated by so many second and third+ seasons being produced (and not just because they're split cours)

If I had to guess... international streaming money. Especially when compared to the market for light novels, which seems pathetic. That is, the money brought in by anime adaptations is probably more than they're seeing in increased source material sales. They'd be leaving money on the table to not plan to do more.

Though even with the "for advertising" theory, It's not like they've been inventing original endings for any of these series like they used to do. Sure, an original ending would preclude driving viewers to buy the manga/light novels, but it would also close the door on future seasons.

Circling back to streaming money... they can literally invest in additional seasons of popular anime now. The Big O (I think) is the only example I can think of of a western company getting involved in production pre-streaming, and even if there were more I don't think it was common at all.

If single season anime were really only being produced as ads for light novels and manga for a time, it was probably only a temporary aberration, and the "normal" of bringing stories to a newer/wider audience through adaptation has reasserted itself.

Assuming it wasn't just groupthink. I could get hard numbers easily enough on how many shows per broadcast season have had additional cours produced, but I don't have the data on hand for determining which anime were adaptations, and whether their cours were left open-ended or had closure...

My talking sword has a point. And is also right.

Season 4 now officially confirmed for spring 2026.

Let's hope they don't drop the ball with it as badly as they did season 3.

@AliceCheshire different studio entirely, so if the ball is dropped it'll be in entirely different ways.

Before season 3 was announced, I was told that it would be unusual to have more than two seasons, but it got more. Also in my fairly limited experience, if a season n+1 happens, it gets announced near or after the end of season n. (For example, we've just recently had an announcement of season 3 of Apothecary Diaries just as season 2 finishes.)

I think I've been miscounting seasons. I was thinking season 1 = part one (daughter of a soldier), season 2 = part 2 (shrine maiden), season 3 = first part of adopted daughter, and then a season 4 had been announced before season 3 had aired, which I thought weird.

However, actually season 1 = daughter of soldier, seasons 2 and 3 = shrine maiden, season 4 has been announced some time ago and the news is just that now it has a firm(ish) release date.

So this was a misunderstanding on my part.

It isn't too unusual, originally the first season was supposed to be a 24-ish episode run that covered all of part 1 and part 2 up until just after the trombe hunt, but COVID interrupted the schedule with a long break in the middle and then it was listed on streaming services as season 1 part 1 and season 1 part 2, but then by the time they got to the US Blu Ray release it was sold in a single box as seasons 1 and 2.

Well let's hope the new studio doesn't continue down the same path as the previous one then. I'm really not sure what they were thinking with season 3. They constantly had music playing during dark and serious scenes that was way too cheerful for the actual atmosphere of the scenes. They also kept sweeping the darker parts of the story under the rug which would really bite them when it comes to the Hasse execution. I think I complained about this point earlier in the thread but they were writing themselves into a corner where they either whitewash one of the darkest parts of the story and completely undermine the impact or they show the execution as it was written and get criticized by people who don't read the manga or novels for it being extremely jarring compared to the rest of the series.

@AliceCheshire, that's kind of the problem with Bookworm, though, isn't it. At first glance, it seems like a cute all-age story about the adventures of a little girl, but underneath that thin veneer there are some very dark things going on.

Have Studio Wit ended up with the proverbial poisoned chalice? We'll just have to wait and see how they cope, but a studio of that caliber ought to be able to make it work somehow.

After reading something captivating, book lovers simply need to talk about it with someone.

@stardf29 You say it looks low-budget, but the budget is definitely higher than during the previous seasons

The Twitter account for the anime just released new key art for S4, adapting Part 3, for two consecutive cours! The updated trailer shows quite improved animation and teases the new opening, "Pages" from Little Glee Monster. Excited since we'll have up to 26 episodes so I expect less cuts than we got for Part 2 of the series. Can't wait for this to air in April for half a year!

@Xyarn part 2 had 20 episodes to adapt 4 volumes, so essentially 5 episodes per volume. If they do all of part 3 in those 2 cours, that's 26 episodes to adapt 5 volumes, 5.2 episodes per volume. That doesn't give it much more room to prevent cuts to me.

@GeorgeMTO I stand corrected. Possibly would see less of the side stories of P3 adapted then. I forgot about that OVA episode introducing Justus and Eckhart from a side story from P3V2 for half that episode. Quite a lot present in P3, though I would like to hope it is handled better this time.

I pray that the side stories following around the end of P3 get better adaptations or screen time than the few seconds of Myne's mourning from the last episode of last season, P2V4 epilogue with the black cloth and the neighbors of her family.

Well... In a "blink and you will miss it" (as unlike Hartmut who was pointed out directly, they where not) during that Baptism scene, we had:

Brunhilde, Ottilie, Leberecht, someone who may or may not be Leonore (but I suspect she is), Rihyarda, Oswald (I could have done without his presence really) and Geibe Haldenzel. I did not see Angelica or Lieseleta, nor did I see Bonifatius (poor him) but I may have missed them. I think I also saw the current Geibe Leisegang.

As for the rest, they did resequence some of the more important dialog, probably to make it flow better with the animation. A pity they cut short Myne's response to Brigitte's introduction (and Damuel's reintroduction) because Spoiled Brat #1 was too eager to lead our protagonist to her fated Clifthanger.

Nice touch in the OP to allude to some of the LN's or manga covers and nice touch in the ending to show scenes of Part 1 and 2.

Next week: Re-introduction to the temple's people as well as the next appearance of Fishy Egmon... We will probably only reach the Italian Restaurant and the Monastery in episode 3.

Boni was behind Lamprecht and Cornelius, around 16:45.

I didn't see Rihyarda, Leberecht or Leonore. (At first I thought purple hair behind Hartmut was her, but that's an adult. It could be her mom, I guess?)

Opening music included a frame that was a nod to Attack on Titan? Wait a minute am I watching the right anime? 😆

Just loved the adaptation for this series. Wit definitely did an amazing job!

OP: What's with the coastal scene? The pop-up-book temple has the orphanage reasonably correct (but with much too little front yard) but the Greek temple with columns in the center is not at all correct. Covers from P1V2 and P2V3 get replicated. Not only has Lessy been in most or all of the trailers, he's in the OP. So that is one would-be-surprise they've chosen to spoil. I'm not sure how commoner-Myne gets to run with Tuuli and Lutz without collapsing. Lutz is really skinny.

I feel that Karstedt's house should have balconies suitable for landing and launching highbeasts. I don't think the manga or LN show these either.

They really like making people climb lots of steps to get to the front door, don't they? The temple does the same. Maybe it is a quirk of Ehrenfest architecture.

The coprophagic slime beast pit is wide with no seat or anything? How is one supposed to use it?

The rinsham sales scene was very short and didn't include the flower patterned paper. And somehow R managed to get her hair shiny again beforehand.

There's no way Ella would be serving cookies to Elvira, but I see the point in taking this opportunity to reintroduce her.

Why does R look sad when Ferdinand has just offered the cathedral library keys as a bribe?

The background at 11:07 is not consistent with the first exterior view we get of Karstedt's house, given that they are meeting at the top of those front steps.
When Lamprecht lifts and shakes R, he's warned about her health, but pays no attention...

Meanwhile, Eckhard kneels to be at eye level with her to converse.

R crying over the hairstick gets a good amount of screen time, as it should, for emotional impact.

Ferdinand has the multi-coloured bracelet for doing the crying-face-healing. I don't think he'd be wearing this, nor need it.

The hall they use for the baptism is huge! The crowd looks about the right size (300ish). Nobody gets a seat!

Only three of the god statues seem to have their holy tools.

Hartmut gets introduced with a written label. I didn't expect this, as he isn't relevant until next part. I thought we'd just see him in passing. Brunhilda gets the "see her in passing" treatment, however.

We don't know that R was specifically told to bless everyone.

Sylvester mentions that R was unaware of her noble heritage, but otherwise does not address that she had been "known" to be a commoner.

Wilfried spends 3-4 seconds dragging an unconscious R before he notices.

"to be continued ..." has its ellipsis dots at mid-lowercase-letter height rather than on the baseline. (Undoubtedly there is a typesetting term for this which I don't know.)

Anime (subtitles) uses "upper class noble" instead of "archnoble". Like the LN, "Aub" and "Archduke" are both used. Karstedt's third wife is called "Rosemary" rather than "Rozemary". The temple is called "cathedral".

(Don't expect this much detail from me next week, as I'll be busy visiting family.)
