Ascendance of a Bookworm - General Discussion

@hopebestman I answered it here.
-
@hiroto thanks. sorry for asking same question.

Japanese government is implementing draconian Coronavirus measure to shut down all the schools starting next week until April.
Author added in her status report - "There goes my productivity with kids around all day."
-
@hiroto I hope the measures work. Better to have reduced productivity from kids than from illness!

New merchandise! Grey Priest T-Shirt!
https://amnibus.com/products/detail/10924
From her status report:
I specifically requested for this Grey Priest T-shirt. To tell you the truth I wanted line patterns on shoulders and neck too but they cannot do that kind of printing on T-shirt.
Staff: "Do you really want it although we can only print on the chest?"
Kazuki: "Yes!"
Staff: "Are you sure you want Grey Priest and not Blue Priest? "
Kazuki: "I prefer Grey for my daily use."
Staff: "What? You're going to wear it regularly?"
Kazuki: "Of course! I'll wear it when I'm home."
Staff: "... Kazuki-sensei, do you think it will sell?"
Kazuki: "How would I know? But if it doesn't, TO Books can buy them up and use them as staff uniform at Bookworm events."So did the planning go with the staff.
To be honest, I did go back and forth between Blue and Grey, but don't you think bright blue with gold (yellow?) is a little too much for daily outfit? Something I'll be hesitant to be wearing when opening a door to receive a delivery is not suitable for daily use so I chose Grey. I'll feel like being an attendant doing my house work in this T-shirt! (laugh).
And more stuff here: https://amnibus.com/products/title/430

@hiroto A bit pricey for a T-shirt with just an arrow. If only the lines that Kazuki-sensei wanted were there...
-
I'm tempted for this one. Pretty cool design. https://amnibus.com/products/detail/10922
-
@hiroto Yeah, that one looks nice. Would probably go with the hoodie if I buy it.
If the printing was in gold and the color of the T-shirt was deep blue, it will look like Myne's ceremonial robes :D
-
@hiroto
It kinda bothers me how it's "ascendance of a Bookworm and not "Ascendance of a Bookworm" or "ascendance of a bookworm". Also, I don't know how to feel about them retconning Myne's name in the in-universe characters for the shirt:ユルゲン文字の「マイン」を組み合わせ
On the one hand retconning is bad, but on the other hand if we use this super secret key then on the shirt her name converts to "Myne" instead of "Main".

We discussed WHO is Ferdinand but i really like to open that topic again. With all the power and even after 3rd volume , we dont know anything about him.
- First , people thinks he is half brother of the Archduke.
Well , i dont think it is. The reason is , when the father died , step-mother got some political power and tried to kill Ferdinand. I dont care who you are , you cant kill Archduke's brother. Even if the reason is fight about tittle , Ferdinand and half-brother like each other. So F. wouldnt try to be Archduke , he cant be because he is the son of mistress , there is a legitimate son and older age wise. So you cant kill Ferdinand.
I dont remember the other theories but he is definetly archnoble(his family) , he lead the Knight's Order. He is strong , capable , powerful guy. As story teller , author will explain who he is but i wonder when?
-
@hopebestman I'd almost think he's Karstedt's half brother, but the way Karstedt referred to the death of Ferdinand's father in that internal monologue ("his" instead of "their") and the apparent rank difference makes me doubt it. Karstedt is an arch-noble who has known and earned the trust of Ferdinand for quite some time, and whose family treated Ferdinand like a favorite uncle who isn't around nearly often enough.
-
@empactwb in P2V1 we know Ferdinand has ONE brother and he is older and legit noble. So i dont think his brother would neal to Ferdinand and would call him Lord Ferdinand. Also in this vol Kars couple times refer him as “friend” , which there is no reason to tell lie.

Today is (at least in my time zone) the one year anniversary of J-Novel Club releasing Part 1 Volume 1 (Part 1) and after just a year we are now at Part 2 Volume 3 (Part 9). Comparing to the web novel fan-translations, after one year they were at web novel chapter 40 which would be in the middle of Part 1 Volume 2.

Recently some people talking about gods and magic system. I honestly dont want to see the gods or too big fantasy stuff. Sure, magic is a thing and it will be useful but some people saying "Myne is some kind of goddess" or "she is connected with gods" etc. I dont know what will happen in the series' future but i hope gods will be only use as metaphore and for magic system(spells, enchantments etc).
-
@hopebestman To be fair, some amount of weird intervention has taken place, in putting Urano's memories into Myne. I don't know if this was intentional or not on anyone's part, or if it even matters in the end considering Myne hasn't had any divine revelations about her purpose here in this world.
I do like the interpretation that the gods may or may not exist, but magic is separate from them, even with regards to prayers. It's not that the gods are directly intervening when someone prays for a spell effect, but more that the specific faith and belief of the caster (and their mana capacity and manipulation) causes those spell effects.
-
@unsynchedcheese The source of the mana used in magic is the caster, not the god. Invoking the names of gods just seems to provide "structure" to the mana, so that it can be used. Maybe the names are just "words of power" or something, and the mythology originally developed around the words (designating the words as divine names) as a way to make them easier to learn and remember?
That probably isn't really the way it is in Bookworm, but that is how I would do it if I were a writer.

@jcochran said in [CORRECTIONS]-Bookworm Part 2 Vol 3:
@hiroto Indeed. Benno, upon seeing the demonstration, immediately goes to hunker down upon envisioning the upcoming turmoil. A single printing press cannot and will not print enough books to cause a turmoil. It just can't produce enough books. But imagining a future with hundreds to thousands of printing presses? OMG, that is truly deserving of the "change history" description. But one press? Pfft.
There are a lot of ways "one press" can change things.
Introducing a "wall newspaper" spread around the lower city, disseminating news and upcoming events, is one simple idea. Although there would be a lot of people lamenting the cost of the paper to inform illiterate people, it does introduce the idea of becoming literate, to know what is going on. And Myne and Ferdinand have already discussed "controlling the flow of knowledge" to the masses.
But we already know that the supply of paper is a limit on all of this. Myne needs a medium sized forest she can decimate with power tools... :)
-
@SomeOldGuy all true, and all not related to Benno's response to the Foreman.
Notice that Benno mentions that only Ehrenfest is producing plant paper. Why should that matter if he's only concerned about Myne's press which is in Ehrenfest?
Notice that Benno mentions that the Ink Guild just learned how to produce printers ink. Why should that matter if he's only concerned about Myne's press since she makes her own ink in-house?
One press is insignificant in the grand scheme of things. Yes, it can have a large effect, but that effect is purely locall. It in no way warrents the description "history changing" in what it can actually do ... unless you realize that it's just a precursor to many more presses. And even then, it's significance is simply because it's the first.
Benno says that Myne will finish her press soon, but it will take awhile before actual printing starts to happen. Given his mentioning the lack of resources in locations away from Ehrenfest, the "actual printing" isn't the stuff Myne's single, local press can produce, but instead what non-local presses, scatted across the world can produce.
