Deathbound Duke's Daughter Vol. 1 Cover
With all the anime conventions getting canceled, we hosted a Twitch stream virtual panel to reach everyone social distancing at home!

      New Series Licenses!

J-Novel Club is continuing to pick up new series, some that have been requested, and some that we hope you’ll fall in love with!

      Deathbound Duke's Daughter
A new J-Novel Heart title! A young woman is reincarnated as Erika Aurelia, a little villainess from an otome game who’s fated to die in all seven routes. Using her wits and her brother’s (very expensive!) magical items, she aims to destroy her death flags... and survive!

Wild Times with a Fake Fake Princess
Kyouhei is the kind of person to cherish every moment of his peaceful, ‘normal’ everyday. Enter a naked girl released from a coffin with no idea what ‘normal’ is? Now he just wants off this fake fake princess’s wild ride!

Campfire Cooking in Another World with My Absurd Skill (Manga)
Read the manga version of our light novel! Mukouda just wants to live quietly away from the sketchy kingdom that summoned him. He may have low stats, but his unique skill gives him more leeway than he thinks. Can he get by on half-baked cunning, a love of home-cooking, and a bit of luck?

      A Wild Last Boss Appeared!
A highly requested series! Lufas Maphaahl was vanquished 200 years ago... until a man wakes up in her body, the character he played in Exgate Online.

      New Print Editions

FUNA’s I Shall Survive Using Potions! series will be coming to print starting this fall! Both the light novel and the manga! In addition, look out for the Ascendance of a Bookworm manga and By the Grace of the Gods, which has an anime adaptation coming!

In addition, we're working on the next omnibus editions for Banner of the Stars and Full Metal Panic!, so look out for those in 2021!

Thanks for joining us for our first announcement stream! Hope you’re staying safe and healthy in these difficult times!

      Happy reading!

I'm especially happy about A Wild Last Boss Appeared! and Deathbound Duke's Daughter picked my interest too (although I can't really understand why it's labeled as a J-Novel Club Heart novel). Thank you very much, J-Novel Club, for these wonderful licenses!!!

I am so pumped for Deathbound Duke's Daughter and Last Boss. I've been interested in these for ages, especially the first one, so I'm starting them immediately.

Just asking, but will we get suprise titles like last time too (I'm not counting A Wild Last Boss Appeared!, because the hint got officially announced, albeit a bit later than the others)?

Theoretically if there were any surprise announcements, announcing them ahead of time would eliminate the surprise.

Can't say, cause I honestly don’t know, I am just a Moderator, so licensing titles decisions are well beyond me.

I read a bit of the first part of Wild Last Boss and really liked it. It’s been a while since I followed a series weekly here, but think I will for this one.

To say I’m disappointed is an understatement. None of the announced appeal to me at all in the slightest. Next round of J-Novel Club’s announcements, I’m not going to be optimistic.

I watch for license announcements with interest but not with the expectation that they'll be what I'm looking for. This is particularly true with JNC given that most of what they license is newer stuff that I'm unlikely to have heard of. If they actually license something that I've been looking for, then it's a fantastic surprise, and if they license stuff that I haven't heard of but which sounds interesting, then great. But unless you like to read pretty much any and every light novel you can possibly get your hands on, being optimistic about license announcements is probably going to lead to disappointment more often than not.

Personally, I don't think that any of these sound all that interesting (though I may check out Wild Times with a Fake Fake Princess), but clearly some people were already aware of them and are very excited about them. Either way, the news about more print releases is certainly good news.

“could the publisher of licensed more popular works?”

I'd like to know what insider information you have that lets you ask yourself this and somehow confidently conclude "Yes, they could have, and now I should be upset that they haven't."

It's perfectly possible that JNC has had the opportunity to license series that I'd like to see licensed on several occasions and passed on them. It's also perfectly possible that every time they've had the opportunity to license such a series, they've licensed it. It could be the same with whatever series you'd like to see licensed. We don't know enough about what's going on to have any clue as to what JNC can and can't license or what they've passed on. They can only license so many series at once, some licenses aren't going to make sense (e.g. because they're too expensive), and some publishers simply aren't going to be willing to work with them (e.g. some publishers want guaranteed print releases which does not fit JNC's business model).

I can totally believe that JNC's business model is leading them to primarily license series that do not interest you and thus making most license announcements unappealing, but that doesn't mean that what they're doing isn't working or that they ever had the opportunity to license what you wanted anyway.

Ultimately, JNC is going to license what they think makes the most sense given their options, and that doesn't necessarily align with what some of us would most like to see licensed. If you don't like something they license, then don't buy it. Make licensing suggestions and vote with your wallet, but ultimately, JNC is going to do what they think makes the most sense based on their current circumstances whether or not those decisions make sense with the limited information we have and whether or not they're the decisions we'd like to see made.

Regardless, I think that it's important to remember that the light novel landscape in the US is worlds better than it was ten years ago. It used to be that very near zero LN series got licensed in the US. Now, several companies are regularly releasing a variety of titles, and we're actually getting quite a few license announcements a year. Obviously, not all series are getting licensed, and plenty of great series are unfortunately left by the wayside, but the situation is so much better than it used to be.

Well, none of these were on my wish list so not that excited about this announcement. I may try 1 title but not expecting much. Maybe next time.

I always try to read at least one part of every new LN title. I may not make it through that part, and there were one or two where I couldn't get past the description - but I try to give everything at least a chance to interest me.

Read all the intro parts for the three new LNs, and it was a mixed bag - one strained my credulity so much that it ended up kinda meh (but it was good-natured enough that I'll give it at least another couple of parts), one was silly but moderately fun, and one looks very promising.

@Clarabelle Deathbound Duke’s Daughter is my favorite so far; the heroine is intelligent and clever, and proactive; that counts for a lot to me. :)
