Only 18 in the completed works category? I wasn't too confident about my entry there, but just 18 novels feels more like this is a second round type deal.

@kitason said in [JNC LIGHT NOVEL CONTEST 2025] Round 1 Judging for "Ongoing Series" & “Completed”Category Announced!:

As a new writer, I tried not to expect too much to happen this year, but I could not help being hopeful. As others have mentioned, this is a one-of-a-kind opportunity for us to have our works adapted to Japanese, manga, or a potential anime. An anime is an ultimate dream, but to be honest, I would be perfectly happy and extremely grateful to simply have one volume published for people around the world to enjoy, even if it has a smaller fanbase than many. As a new writer, I was proud of myself for committing to this novel, writing a story I enjoyed, and enjoying myself while writing it. Right now, it feels wonderful to be able to say "I wrote a novel" even if nobody will be reading it yet. It is like a whole new world has opened up. I have also appreciated reading this forum and seeing how genuine and friendly the other writers are and how willing they are to help each other when you could argue that we are all rivals with the same goal.

One final question I have is this: Are these contests the only way to really land a publishing opportunity with Japan Novel Club, or are there other opportunities?

A question I'm sure many of us want answered. I feel as though that the competition by design doesn't quite do as good a job as it could in leading to authors outside of Japan getting a publishing deal. While I do think the prizes should remain the same, I do feel some of the finalists that don't win or even those that fail to pass the first round, shouldn't just be cast aside until they're resubmitted to the next iteration of the contest. I know it's a sad fact that often times publishers will reject something that can potentially become the next big thing, but I feel trying to create a better system that could allow those living outside of Japan a better chance of getting a publishing deal, should at the very least be taken into consideration.

I extend my thanks to whoever calls the shot once again, for their seems still to be an interest in dark fantasy, or rather, bluntly put, more sterner and more steely selections.
Looking forward to Revenge of the Soul Eater and Bullet Hellion. The former's something I've wanted ever since its inception.

Oh wow. I guess I really have been too busy with work the past few of weeks. Never saw this news until today.

Excited that Hero & the Sage is licensed! I enjoyed the (fan-translated) manga and was looking forward that somebody would license the LN. I'll check that out soon.

Oh my god, my heart went all dokun and crazy, almost had a heart attack (seriously). Then I noticed it was only for the "Ongoing" stories (mine is complete). And I'm glad I did notice that before I checked the passing titles 🥵

I am still shaking here. I know I said I wanted to know the results as soon as possible, but now I was barely able to click the link. I better not come here and wait for the email because my heart won't last the stress of searching over a list of titles.

      @ailuo

      Hello,

While we strive to offer all of our licensed series for rental that is not always an option.

There is no specific date for when series that do not have a rental option will.

If you wish to read the book your only option is purchasing the ebook.

      Apologies for the inconvenience.

@Windsagio I have two categories for JNC series I follow - the ones I buy, and the ones I keep as prepub only.

Bookworm, Apothecary Diaries and Dahlia in Bloom are examples of the former. These are series I really enjoyed and will definitely read again.

The latter category mostly includes manga includes those books I either won't read again, or simply didn't like enough to justify the purchase. My funds are also limited, unfortunately... .

As for buying the Japanese versions, well, I don't do that very often, just with a couple of series as shipping can be expensive. Right now, the only ones I'm actively buying are manga (My Happy Marriage's special editions and Shoukoku no Altair, both of which get like one book per year) and the Honzuki junior bunko.

My Happy Marriage is also a strange example in that I'm getting the English novels but the Japanese manga... perhaps it's because the setting, but that one just feels like I have to read it in Japanese ahaha.

@myskaros will grieving souls volumes flow uninterrupted up to the latest jp volumes? Hoping for weekly updates to parts with the typical 2 weeks between volumes. If not, can i know the schedules for it?

There is always only one answer to that question.

I bought a lot of credits not to game the system but to hedge against the pound falling against the dollar (which it subsequently did).

Here are our new licenses from Anime Boston!

... but can we place a limit on main characters who are dressed all in black? ...

And on characters named Aisha or any abbreviation of it. I start mixing them up. Is that the most beloved name of Japanese authors or what? (this is not just JNC titles, but across all English light novel releases. There are so many I get confused).

I read both parts of 4 of the new novels, they seem promising. Let's see where it goes from here :)

@saffire We're kind of waiting to make a few other changes all at once to the app so it might be a little while but we'll definitely get to it (along with allowing purchases of coins etc IN the app).

Amazon just stopped allowing you to purchase within the Kindle app because they didn't want to give the app stores their cut.

I think JNC are in a pretty different situation to Amazon though. The app stores cut likely aren't much different to what Kobo, Bookwalker and Amazon themselves are taking for selling the books 3rd party. If they can bring more people over to buying direct by offering that additional payment method, that balances out.
