Finally a much needed update on what's going on. 🙄
-
@Terrence this is good news. The company kind of fell apart this year but it sounds like they are picking themselves back up again.
Since they don't list dates for World Teacher I'll guess they are in the "early next year" group. If they do release them I'll go ahead and buy them.
-
As someone who also retreats from deadlines when faced with personal tragedy I completely understand what he’s going through. That said, the next three months will be make or break for them and if the releases they say are planned don’t come out on time, I’ll pretty much assume they’re not going to last into 2024.
-
I guess we'll see, it really hurts to see their store page for World Teacher and see them proudly proclaim
This series currently has 14 volumes published in Japan.
While there's only one volume available in English.
Hope their site revamp will get a store page that actually lists any bonuses that come with the stuff. I seem to recall there was some bonus material in the physical print, but I can't for the life of me find anything on their site that lists what it was.
-
@jpwong Actually the 16th volume and finale to the series releases in Japan on September 25th. https://www.animenewsnetwork.com/news/2022-09-02/world-teacher-light-novels-end/.189268
What I take from this announcement is that they are relying too much on their president for basically all company functions. Of course hiring more translators takes money which it sounds like they’re low on, but when your president goes AWOL and you all of a sudden can’t do business because everything relies on that one guy, you get another Sol Press.
-
@LegitPancake Maybe they'll update that information when they revamp their site.
Maybe I should make a suggestion topic that JNC license the manga, but I'm not sure if that would be kind of like swiping the license out from under Tentai. It's up to 11 volumes and I don't think anyone's got the license yet.

The manga seems like fair game to me if they haven't licensed it yet. Tentai already has more licenses than they can handle and they need to take care of those first.
This seems unlikely, but for their own sake it might be better to talk with the original publisher and JNC about transferring the World Teacher LN to JNC so Tentai can focus on delivering volumes for their other licenses. Slim down, ship a bunch of volume 3s and 4s, and win back the trust of the readers.

With the blog update out, I can finally say I'm working on editing How to Melt the Ice Queen's Heart vol 2 right now. :)
-
After reading the Hanashi thread, I was reminded of Tentai and re-read the September blog post. So it looks like they haven’t made good on their promise to release How To Melt An Ice Queen’s Heart Vol 2 (I searched on Amazon and Google Books) on October 31st. I read the last blog post with an empathetic heart as the whole affair sounds like the sort of mess I’ve gotten into, but I also gave them my trust only as far as they could hit the target dates they set in that post and now that date is almost a month in the rear view mirror. JNC better get back on the rescue train.
-
@the-green-death They had an issue come up and had to swap which volume was coming out in October. I believe it was whatever was meant to come out in November, and that Ice Queen is still meant to come out end of this month?
-
@GeorgeMTO Based on the blog post it should be "You Like me don’t you 2" in that case and that does appear to be listed on their digital storefront, and amazon lists it as having released Oct 29, 2022.
-
@jpwong I got it already, so there is at least SOMETHING released recently.
-
Tentai has a new blog, and it sounds like we will finally get both World Teacher 2 and 3 in Q1 2023: https://tentaibooks.com/en/tentai-books-2023-a-fresh-restart/

Talk is cheap. Or rather text is cheap in this case. Until I see them releasing volumes with a proper, constant schedule I won't believe anything in that blog entry.
The only series I'm interesting in from them is World Teacher, and I sure do hope they make a better effort for the next volumes because the first one was full of errors. (Not even JNC prepubs have that many...)
===
EDIT: I also didn't realize before that a single translator is handling all their series. That's just a recipe for disaster, but it does explain the huge delays so far.

Sounds like their management needs to take some courses in management. 🙃
-
@Terabyte
Definitely. Would have been good to see an update in December when Ice Queen 2 still wasn't there (also concerning that no mention of Seatmate Killer 2 despite its supposed release date being 20th of December; even more delays?).There's also the extra concern that the guy who's now doing all the translating is also the one who caused hefty delays last year due to personal issues (as mentioned in the September post). Not saying should be solely to blame (as this time seems to be other processes not working), but it's still a concern.
Also surprising the mention of him translating 3-4 series at a time, considering each of J-Novel's translators seem to focus on 1-3 series AFAIK and I doubt most of them would be involved in the management side of the business as well. May be possible...but also seems like at risk of burnout.
-
1 translator for the entire company sounds deeply problematic for the number of series they have, though I suppose if they're an actual employee vs being a freelancer if may make some sort of difference.

This is the only series they have that I have any interest in at this time as well, but it's really hard to commit to buying it when I believe the bonuses are only in the physical print and the shipping costs are way too high to justify buying just the single volume they have available right now.

I think in some other blog post they mentioned bonuses would be included in digital releases too for future volumes? I might be wrong though.

It's the actual Tentai owner doing the translations.
Given that translation expenses is one of the most expensive parts of the process as I understand, I wouldn't be surprised if it was either this or closing down shop.
-
@Terabyte Yeah the whole thing with having the guy who runs the company also be in charge of translating 5 series or more seems pretty unsustainable. Then dude is asking what sort of new series we want?! Maybe no new series for a while first dude, cut through your backlog and then talk about new acquisitions
