Funny Tropes/Cliches

I always find the cliche of the General is the best fighter in the army to be pretty funny. IRL generals/admirals are just bureaucrats who handle logistics and strategy, they aren't fighting anywhere. They are often pretty old too. So when there is a super important mission and a four-star general is leading the tactical team I always find it kind of funny.
I'm just curious if anyone else has a cliche/trope that they run across that just makes them shake their head. Why is it so funny to you?

@db0ssman The "mana transfer through a kiss" trope. Even when justified it's basically just an excuse to get two characters to kiss, and being the sappy romantic that I am, I love this trope cause it gives the characters a reason to kiss😁🥰

I was a good student, so I shake my head a little bit at the common trope of the MC who succeeds with guts and determination but none of that silly studyin' and payin' attention and book-learnin' and rule-followin'. "I'm an outlaw, Dottie. A rebel." I'd be rooting for Iceman over Maverick or Topper Harley.
I get that it's rebelling against conformity, but you can live outside the box while still doing your homework kids! Stay in school! ;)
I was watching the Isekai Cheat Magician anime, and the childhood friend is much more admirable to me than the MC. He just goes "rarrgh!" and hulks out, or uses his one cheat skill by instinct. She studies all forms of magic and thinks about how to combine them to increase their effect.
The Needless anime had fun with this. The MC and his overpowered companions relied on a kid to tell them what to do because he actually has a working brain instead of being a meathead.

That's a funny coincidence, I thought of this because I was watching the Isekai Cheat Magician anime earlier. The general of the army lady seems to be that just because she is a great fighter, even though she is supposed to be super young.

The war chief being the strongest fighter makes sense for small tribes and semi-civilized areas ruled by strongmen. It makes a lot less sense for most civilized kingdoms unless it's the national culture like the one kingdom in Arifrueta.
Like you said, in a civilized army a general needs leadership and strategic thinking much more than fighting prowess. They do need to understand what their forces are and are not capable of though.

@db0ssman It helps for story telling. Although there are examples IRL, Alexander the Great would be one of the examples. In LNs, i like Realist Hero's approach. They make plans before battle, and they give the battle command to talented and famous people. In time, when these people make good examples for soldiers like Hal did battle of Van, they made name for themselves. In that book, people call to Souma "Great King" who won the war, who lead the army to the victory. In reality all he did was telling couple stories from his world and some tactics. Real general was his right hand Hakuya and real hero were Ludwin and Hal. There were also people like Fuuga but these stories take place in old times. In old times there were "bureaucrats who handle logistics and strategy" but people would write songs for "Great WARRIORS" after technology develop "great generals who handle logistics and strategy" become much important so thats why people like Hitler(im talking for his leadership), Napoleon or Atatürk become great people. Its all about time. If you wouldnt be strong warrior, people wouldnt follow you in old times.
PS: In LNs, protagonist have plot armor. They are the strongest, the wisest, the handsomest person in that world. Look at Keima in Lazy Dungeon Master. We dont know anything about that guy but in that series, but as for story telling he is the most intelligent person ever lived in that world. Why, because of plot armor.
Also Game of Thrones would be nice example as well. People follow great people. And the most easy way to show your greatness is fighting. Being wise ruler is a good thing but your success grow slowly so its hard to see with naked eyes.

@hopebestman I'm not saying there was never a general that was also a good fighter, though someone like Ghengis Khan is probably a better example of someone who is both a powerful fighter and the general. Those would we exceptionally rare cases and they would have to surround themselves with the more traditional types of generals that are actually leading the troupes, provisioning supplies, directing camp building etc etc. Even those known for being great fighters did most of their actual direct fighting early in the career, long before they were in charge of whole armies.
In a lot of media (including LN, Manga, and Anime) most are super great warriors who fight on the front lines with the troops. That's just not the role of a general. Most historically successful generals are more like a Nimitz or Sun Tzu who specialize in troop movements, logistics, leadership, intelligence, and strategy. It's not like in popular media, "oh I can swing my sword and take down five fighters, I'm the general now!"
