Halloween Catchups in 2020!
-
It's October, and everyone knows what that means... Halloween!
To celebrate, we've got a few creepy series on catchup! First is Ao Oni, a horror series about playing tag... with a big monster, trapped in a mansion! Next is Faraway Paladin, which follows a human boy being raised by the undead! Finally, for our first ever manga catchup, read about the Unwanted Undead Adventurer, a man who somehow turns into a skeleton and has to evolve into other undead to survive!
October is also when a new anime season starts, and so you can read along with the newly airing anime of By the Grace of the Gods! Ryoma dies and finds himself meeting with three gods. They reincarnate him in another world and simply want him to enjoy his life. He decides to raise slimes in the forest by himself, until his first contact with humans in this new world sets him down a new path!
To round things out, you can also read all of the sci-fi classic Crest of the Stars and its followup Banner of the Stars, as well as a couple of our J-Novel Heart titles: The Tales of Marielle Clarac, and Can Someone Please Explain What's Going On?!
Happy Halloween!

I'll try to read volume 2 of ao oni for Halloween. The first volume was pretty great but I just never got around to continuing the series.
I have so much other backlog rn I'll probably just leave it at that, but for those who haven't read Faraway Paladin, is always high on my list of JNC favorites
Might try Undead Adventurer manga too. The prose style of the novel killed me but the story underneath seemed fun.
-
Oh i will try Crest of the Stars.
It's the first part of the whole Banner of the Stars saga ?
And i will read Undead Adventurer ! Thanks ! :) -
Darn, I was hoping Master of Ragnarok would be on catch-up this month. I forgot to read the 12th volume before it expired in September. Oh well, maybe next month.
-
I might check out Crest of the Stars, other than that I've read all of them except Ao Oni, but I don't really care for horror, my tastes in that run more to the somewhat gothic or macabre rather than straight up terror.
More importantly, calling Faraway Paladin creepy is a horrid injustice to the touching well-crafted masterpiece that is the series' first volume, puts away soapbox. Really anyone here who has the slightest liking of fantasy or adventure and has not read it is really missing out. Looks longing to bookshelf, wishing it had a physical release@the-green-death I found the manga for Undead Adventurer rather more fun and easy to read than the LN (at least going off the first volume, I'm rather behind on the LN). If you were turned off by the prose of the LN give the manga a look to see if the story is to your taste

I've been wanting to check out Grace, Marielle Clarac, and Please Explain, so I'm quite happy with the lineup this time around.
I'm not too good with 'creepy' - although, actually, I read Otherside Picnic and am just fine so maybe I'm better with creepy than I thought lol. If I have time after reading my high-priorities I'll at least give the others a try.
-
Woo crest of the stars here I come. I remember hearing good things about this series back in the day after watching the anime. Been so long since I've seen it though.
-
I wanna catch up on Unwanted Undead if possible. Hopefully I can really get through the prose.
Crest of the Stars is good but it's kinda an acquired taste btw.
-
Oh cool, I actually have stuff on that list I want to read. I've been reading the Tales manga and have been enjoying it. Faraway Palladian also sounds interesting.
-
I might finally have a go at Faraway Paladin...
-
@ShipTeaser Oh, you definitely should check it out. I has a great high fantasy feel, and it's well-written, head and shoulders above many other fantasy LNs I've read. This series is one of the best LNs I have ever read, and on the short list of LNs I consider capital 'L' Literature.
-
@Lily-Garden well you weren't wrong. A couple of parts in I bought all four volumes premium, which I have now binged.
A most excellent series and one I recommend people should check out while it's free. It's madness not to.
-
I'm confirming that I will not have time to check out everything I wanted to this month.. but I'm loving Crest of the Stars so much, I think I'm gonna pick up a hard copy on my next shopping spend. I can see why it's not for everyone and that some of the original language stuff and sci fi jargon could put some people off... but if you like space opera type stuff and enjoy a dive into alien culture/politics/war/etc, definitely shouldn't sleep on this one. I have a familiar feeling with Spice and Wolf as well, although that's a different genre.

Hi everyone! Catchups will be changed on Monday around/after 1000 PST/1800 UTC, so get your reading in before then!
-
Thanks for the reminder on the time for the change.

Story of my life this month:
Sorry, Grace and Paladin, I didn't have enough time for all of you TAT
-
@MasterLillyclaw So much truth...
-
@myskaros I am having issues with the manga reader - I keep getting error messages, and I really want to finish unwanted undead ASAP!

@Royal-Genitals Can you please post something in the Support forum? Be as thorough as possible: PC or mobile? Windows, Mac, iOS, Android? Screenshots if possible, otherwise describe step by step what's happening and when something is failing.
