Poll about certain license requests
-
If a user posts a License request, but posts it as a question (example) should that topic be locked down, if a topic for that title already exists?
I was tossing the idea around for a bit, and can see it going either way, so I just put a poll out there, and will see how the community (or the specific individuals who vote) wants them handled.
By all means if you would like to expand your answer beyond yes, no, or would like to offer some other suggestions, please comment below.

From my position, locking down a topic makes it hard to discuss that particular title. It stifles the conversation. Which maybin turn drumb up overwhelming support for a particular title that may be a profitable license.
Basically, locking it down makes it look like no one is interested and that may very well cost JNC a good opportunity for a license.
-
I understand, however it would not just be locked down, I would explain that there is a topic open for it, and link to that topic, for further discussion.
When someone directly posts a license suggestion topic for a series that already has one, we do link to the already established one, and at the same time since it is a duplicate topic it gets locked down.
This would only apply to series that have topics established, if no topic is established then it would be left open.
This is all to figure out if topics that are posed as questions for potential licenses, like the example in the OP, should be treated as a duplicate topic or not.

I vote yes for this if it is for any duplicate topics for sure if not the forms could get out of hand and i could understand where confusion could rise from it. it may be a good idea to make searching for said topics easier not sure if there is a way to do that easily but having some way to maybe have a list of topics or even just a single form for suggestions for said topics and have staff create a topic for each one to discuss the title. with links to said titles from the suggestion form maybe have the name of each suggestion be the link to the topic. I'm not sure what would be easiest to do but maybe this may help a little.

Lock down, link and if possible move / copy the initial post (and comments)to the other thread

@Rahul-Balaggan
As long as there is a clear avenue for discussion and is easy to find. It's kinda part of the fun of it all being able to comment on the series, wish and hope for it to be picked up then I'm good with whatever. -
I voted for locking multiple "license and translate this book!!!!!" cheer leading topics.
If a separate "let's discuss this book" topic were created in the light novel discussion section, that's a different story.

If there is an existing thread proposing a license for a series then a 'would you consider licensing X?' topic should be treated as a duplicate and discussion should directed/moved to the existing thread.
Edit: Partly this is because staff basically never answer such topics anyway, so really it is just inviting low-value speculation rather than asking a question of JNC. The only time I think it is helpful to ask about whether JNC would license something is within things like announcement Q&As where you would ask if they would consider licensing light novels 'like X', and then it allows for JNC to talk about about what their current priorities and considerations are. For example, in the early days people asked if JNC they would consider licensing shojou and JNC replied that it was something they hoped to do in the future but that some of their shounen they considered to appeal to both men and women.
-
I lean "yes"; while having a dozen "Please License [Popular Series]" topics would definitely show they're popular, it would also choke out other less-well-known series that may be just as deserving as the popular ones.
-
I would just say that duplicate suggestions should be locked because it not only creates confusion but dilutes support for a particular series by segregating people who love that series into little bubbles.
-
They remind us of great works we missed, forgotten, or neglected.
-
Yes.
Rather than having multiple topics, posting a new reply to an existing thread can also generate new discussion and show continuing interest in a series. Popularity is not the only factor considered in licensing a title anyway, and the real discussion of whether or not JNC will license a title is something that happens internally, not in forums.

There’s a search function, It works.
I hopped onto this section to suggest a series, found it in a second. Dupes are bad mmkay, they defeat the ability of the search engine to find the right thread in a heartbeat.
-
I'm in favor of locking threads if there's repeats. You're going to lose potential "votes" / views on the other post if not (I would suggest locking the post and bumping the original post, or encouraging the poster to leave a comment there).

It does. But it also doesn't work when you don't include the localized English anime title in your post (or not including the Japanese characters, just including Romanization or even short form names; ideally, you'd include all 3 if you can remember).

Huh, maybe there should be a sticky advising people how to look up the romanized names. I wasn’t aware that the search function didn’t work with Japanese characters. However unless it’s an obscure new series it’s usually at least noted on novelupdates with a few ways of reading the name.
Even if the info is just added as a response to a suggestion thread, the search function helps find the thread as long as you search titles and posts.

@Thehalfwit Search works with kanji.
-
I've seen where they integrate the search into the title so when they are going to put one in it also directs them to already made posts
-
all this talk about searches is great, but so far one point has been overlooked. People actually have to remember to do the search before the make the first post in order to avoid duplicates. Not to say they won't, but it has happened and I think that's another point in favor of locking duplicates.

@Lily-Garden You're referring to the age-old problem of, "You can lead a horse to water, but you can't make it break dance."
I administer a forum where we have multiple "sticky" messages that cover a wide range of common problems. That doesn't stop people from starting new topics for what they perceive as being 1% or more unrelated to the already-posted topics.

@nofairytale THANK YOU.
