Seven Seas - April 2020 survey available!

Does anyone nominate the same thing every month? As usual I went with
Biblia Antiquarian Bookshoop
Ryuugajou nanana no maizoukin
sakurako san no ashimoto (I didn't nominate this one last month)
-
@imilyaz I've nominated a few things in repetition, not every month, but I'm pretty positive I'll keep asking for them sometime down the road:
Urara Meirochou - only manga, didn't request any manga this month, very likely to pretty much stop requesting them
Saekano: How to Raise a Boring Girlfriend
May have done Gonna be the Twin-Tail!! - Fairly certain that even apart from the company challenges (hey, they did get To Love Ru, which isn't the same company, but is still what part of Viz is), this is the least likely of all my LN wants, but I pretty much want it the most
-
New survey is out.
What to choose... Probably pick from those Justus R Stone videos of the best selling light novel properties in Japan.
-
I went with my mainstays:
Darwin's Game (manga)
Hatsukoi Zombie (manga)
Sono Mono. Nochi Ni... (LN or manga)I know it's not really possible, but it would be awesome if they were able to list a bunch of license options they've been considering and have people vote on them. Blind nominations make the pool really large and may result in them not seeing interest in any single given property.

There's bound to be some popular choices.
If I had to guess, they'll start to see some patterns down the line with regards to anime series with light novels being popular requests.
Like, I'd guess Knights and Magic, along with Classroom of the Elite would be popular choices (though, the former I hear is a bad anime, the latter good but really much bigger in Japan).
They said we might see some of our requests in their next announcement pool Monday. 😃

Amazon lists two of what are probably of the announcements for preorder. The Arifureta manga, and the Isekai Maou to Shoukan mange adaptation.

Knights and Magic anime is perfectly fine. It's got good production values and great action sequences. It made some strange narrative choices, but overall it's just solidly entertaining, which is the most important part. It's definitely missing a "I want to know what happens next!" appeal, though; there's way too much jumping around in the timeline, months pass in R&D, which removes all sense of urgency. I like the show, but I don't see myself wanting to read more.
Classroom, on the other hand, is one of the most pretentious piles I've seen in a long time. It could have worked if its overall conceit were set up more delicately, but they spent way too much time muddling around with unlikable characters and zooming in on boobs and butts that the overarching plot got no attention, so it's hard to be invested in what's going on. Finally getting a bit interesting in episode 9 is far too late; I'll finish the anime, but I've have no interest in reading the books.
Obviously my opinions are my own and maybe a lot of people like these shows, but I believe both series are missing enough pieces to fall short of universal, long-lasting appeal, such that I don't think they would perform too well as physical releases.
-
@myskaros Yeah, I haven't read up on anything myself (to avoid spoilers), but it just seems that people who like Classroom realllly like it. The LN has been charting every week for a bit in Japan, multiple volumes in the top tens.
Speaking of top tens, top ten light novel sales from Japan video posted by Justus R Stone. Hopefully there's more fun ones there to request in the survey.
And can I ask, is there a series you can compare Classroom to in terms of its pretentiousness? Romantic Comedy SNAFU? Welcome to the NHK? ReLife? A Mari Okada anime? An Inio Asano manga?

I think Death Note is a good comparison, except that it actually has a clearly defined conceit and took it completely seriously to the end of the rope. Classroom wants to address something but is too busy mixing together melodrama, stupid comedy, fan service, or vague foreshadowing to actually tell us its message.
Classroom of the Elite is a combination of Oregairu, Assassination Classroom, and social experiment death games (e.g. JUDGE, DOUBT, Zero Escape, etc.) without earning any of the good will of its audience via character development or intelligent puzzles/games.

@terrence Thanks for posting those Justus R Stone Top 10 in Japan videos, I love them and have also gotten pretty deep into his whole YouTube channel, addicting listening while driving to work.
-
Ah, I don't really like Death Note. Trying to avoid as much info as I can, but I saw you mentioned Zero Escape (and Danganronpa) and Doubt, so I guess I know what to expect a bit now. I love all of those, though DR was a bit try hard at times (I really love the second game though).
Speaking of, did you read Tohyo Game? It starts really good with volume 1, but gets progressively worse and lazy. I'd still say it's worth giving one read through.
Are there any good "Death Game" series not localized? I wouldn't mind more of them. Danganronpa Zero is one I need.
-
@terrence Really, the big issue with Classroom of the Elite is that it wants to do death games without the death... there's no actual, drastic penalty for losing the "games," or at least they haven't revealed one, so it's hard to care what happens.
No, haven't read Tohyo Game. Checked it out, seems more like a supernatural mystery thriller than a psychological death game. Or maybe I'm just thinking in different terms? Some other series that haven't been localized that I think are worth giving a shot are Rengoku Deadroll and Tomodachi Game. Yen Press licensed Tatoe Hai Ni Nattemo. There are a couple other stories I can vaguely remember, but I read them before I started cataloging all the manga I've read, so I'd have to randomly stumble upon them to add them to my list.

It's a voting game, but there are gamey elements (like, it's not just dropping a ballot in the box; sometimes it can be a task to be performed that counts as your vote).
There's a supernatural Another type element, but that's actually the biggest weak point for me since it isn't developed or explained enough, and I was hoping the mastermind was pulling more strings to cause these deaths physically than just using the unexplained magic voting game curse.

You know what to do after watching the latest one...
Spam Sakurako-san's Investigation requests in the monthly poll and forum. =P

Seven Seas has licensed Arifureta manga, as well as Average Abilities (shortened) light novel and manga.
-
@terrence I haven't watched his latest video
But damn was Sakurako-san mentioned there? That's crazy! I nominated it in August!

Volume 12 of Sakurako was in the top ten selling Japanese light novels last month, yeah. I'm hopeful we can get that series someday stateside (along with Subete Ga no F mystery series).
Seems like anything is possible LN wise from Seven Seas now, so we can only cross our fingers, vote for stuff we want in the survey, and hope.
-
Seven Seas has licensed the "For My Daughter" manga!
-
My 3 for this month (don't think I voted before now this month):
Around 40 Kenja no Isekai Seikatsu Nikki
Oda Nobuna no Yabou
Fairytale Chronicle
-
October / November survey up.
I went with some titles I'm not sure I will love, but would look to see make it over for others.
And You Thought There Was Never a Girl Online
Frontier Nobleman Seeks the Ideal Slow Life
A Certain Middle-aged Man's VRMMO Activity Log
