Announcements from April 29! (Recap in first post)
-
We had a mini-livestream on April 29 at 6 PM EDT / 3 PM PDT / 10 PM UTC on our Twitch channel. We went over some general announcements and also hosted a Q&A session with Kamishiro Taishi, one of our translators and a VTuber!

We'll go over some general announcements
Just verifiying: general announcements means no new series on this stream?

My best guess is that they'll be announcing some print releases. They could also be announcing new payment options for the website I guess.
-
Hopefully it's not bad announcements like the end of prepubs or premium editions. New owners sometimes do things like that after a grace period :(
Update: nope, the move to "coins" doesn't seem to hurt premium subscribers at all, the price for epubs even drops by a few pennies.
-
To be fair, I usually see bad corporate news announced as press releases on late Friday afternoons when nobody is looking, not livestreams.
Anyway, my bank already warned me about 3D Secure, so I stockpiled some credits, but it's one of the things I'm hoping to be supported soon.

Yeah, but they would not announce that now, not right before Anime Boston where I imagine they will have a booth and panel. I can't imagine announcing something like that at a panel, let alone before hand to let the attendants know they should bring the pitch forks and torches to the con.
If you are going to announce it, you do it just after con season and let people have a chance to process and vent online before standing in front of a hostile crowd.
That plus ending premium credits ends the need for premium membership at the same moment, as well as removes that bonus from getting the books from this site, which gives more room for editorial control as well as not having to then deal with another company and their cut of the proceeds and red tape.
-
@harmlessdave nah, their entire business is built on the prepubs. I'd bet at least 30-40% of their income is from peoples $5 monthly accounts.
-
A little under 3 hours to go for this stream, in case you weren't watching the time!
-
Looks like nothing but good news and neutral news.
The switch to coins is interesting, and is definitely a positive if it means that some things can be cheaper than otherwise ot that things that couldn't be purchased before will be available in the future. -
Premium manga
Take my money.

i just watched the stream and am a bit more curious about the credits to coins change:
- why was 699 for 1 credit chosen, does this mean that the prices will not be a flat 6$ / 7$ anymore? (maybe its based on what is left after the payment processor fee(s)?)
- is there already a date for the full details announcement planned (that includes like until when credits can be purchased) or is it the same day it launches (may 2)?

- We answered this question on Discord - we're going to add coin purchasing to our app, but the Apple/Google store requires all prices to end in X.99, so basically it's simpler to change the price of a LN to $6.99 instead of making people buy 799 coins in order to buy a LN for 700 coins = $7.
- The details will come with the site change on Monday!

Seriously???
While I understand the idea of Left digit bias and the other reasons why most US prices end in .99, it's just so weird to see it codified into e-shop rules... -

A good deal of their Lego sets are rounded up a penny to get the nice, round number.

@myskaros
I wasn't able to watch the stream due to the time difference but does this mean that for Premium Members 1 E-Book is now $6.99 and $7.99 for Regular members? Or because of how Google/Apple store works the minimum amount that can be bought is $6.99/$7.99 but the actual price for the E-Book itself will still be $6/$7? -

However, members will have a 5% discount when purchasing coins, and premium members a 15% discount in addition to receiving 699 coins per month moving forward instead of 1 credit.

As a question related to the direct purchases over the app.
I get that offering it is good for you folks, but can we avoid an apple/google cut and make sure all the value goes to you by still purchasing thru the website?
I want to make sure I optimize things for JNC, but if it doesn't matter, buying via the app wouold be more convenient.
-
I also understand that Apple has unlisted people from the App Store before for offering a way to pay on your website that side-steps the app store. Is that going to be an issue?

Sounds interesting...Is there some written summary of announcements so that we don't need to watch some rambling video?
-
@arghc There is some on twitter, but nothing covered the premium manga. That one's still a little while off, while the coin change is coming on Monday.
