[CONVENTION APPEARANCE] Anime Expo 2023 with J-Novel Club!

I hope @jazzyjeoff and @zwabbit enter the en light novel contest; you guys have written some of the best ficlets on the forums and I would love to see what you guys could do with a full volume đ
-
Thanks for Knight's and Magic. I wonder what made it hard to license? Was it because the license holder was Square Enix?
-
@clockwarriortock The Knight's & Magic LN isn't under Square (just the manga is), it's under Shufunotomo, the same publisher as The Apothecary Diaries, The Ideal Sponger Life and Seventh for JNC. Long ago on the Discord Sam mentioned the amount they wanted for it in the price was more than he thought it could sell. He confirmed the price was lowered from that, so JNC put in an offer.
Difference in what Japanese publishers think a series is worth and what English publishers think it can sell has kept a fair number of series away over the years.

I wasn't able to find the right booth at anime expo -- unless it was the big kadokawa booth (hard to miss!) but they didn't seem to understand when I asked about J-Novel. (The folks at the booth when I went by were very friendly and helpful but there might have been a language issue too.)
Edit I found it! Wow, the kadokawa booth is huge. I didn't realize the parts across the aisles were all kadokawa too. It's right at the very front section.

@Lily-Garden Thanks for the note. I donât have anything written that is not a riff on Tearmoon Empire, and I donât think I could produce a polished original work quick enoughâbut it might be fun to try!

6 months is a reasonable time period, might not be perfect but what WN ever is?

A week or two of planning and then just 400 or so words a day and you're done. I'm certainly going to give it a try, although it'll be interesting writing something that isn't AFF material for a change đł

I'm tempted to make a submission to the contest as well, though I've already got a few finished stories to choose from. For me, the problem will be whether I can actually force myself to revise one of the stories, as what I have is just a bunch of (highly) flawed, unpolished first drafts, and I really struggle with revision. For me, writing is fun. Revising? Not so much. (And the chances that any of my unedited first drafts will make the cut are practically non-existent. đ) Still, with six months to choose a story and having a go at fixing and improving it, there's at least some hope (if only a little). đ
-
Six months for 100K words is doable, with a bit of focus. There was a time when I was doing something like 5K word chapters per day for about two weeks when I was in an especially "inspired" mode. I think my bigger challenge would be keeping the story compact enough to fit within 100K words. The shortest of my "recent" works that's actually complete breaches the 300K mark. Might have to think about breaking up the plot arcs.

The Isekai panel was an absolute blast! Mad props to Maddie and Andrew, or maybe mad libs.
Now I really want to know which series the "your new best friend turns out to be the big evil threat" came from, though...
-
Yeah gonna throw my hat into the Light Novel ring. It'll be a bit of a pain doing a second story while maintaining my main releases, but I had an idea so why not...
It's all a bit of fun, right heh
-
@hirei, could you give us some idea of how soon we'll get the LN contest submission guidelines in terms of media formats? I know from past experience that it can be a bit of a chore converting between some pairs of formats, especially if you're hundreds of pages in. [Edit] And I know it says no illustrations, but what about maps?
-
A bit late to the news, and it have been a while since Iâve been back here, but Iâm interested in the light novel contest. At the very least, Iâll used it as a goal to get me motivated to finish one of my stories.
-
How is everyoneâs stuff going? I am hoping to stop by here from time-to-time to commiserate with folks trying to get something done in time for the contest. I am also happy to hear from folks who arenât participatingâwho are just curious, or want to offer support (or who want offer a good-natured laugh at our expense)âitâs all good. I mostly subscribe to J-Novel for the forumsâso itâs really nice to hear from folks!
As for me, I donât know if I will get done in time, but at least I have found few characters that i find kind of funâso thatâs a win!
-
@jazzyjeoff still finishing up my outline, I'm having trouble figuring out what I should do in the last 2 chapters. But I've written up a character sheets for my main cast and have some good sense of where I'm going. Now I just have to write the damn thing đ
-
@jazzyjeoff My goal with this contest is to just "finish a novel" because while I had many great ideas in the past I never actually wrote anything past a chapter 1 before. Now I'm sitting at 10k+ words, I'm not very hopeful the end result will be anything substantial but just getting to this point has been a big achievement for me.
I'm also very excited to see everyone else's stories.
Also maybe we could get a thread going for the contest for everyone to discuss their own progress and whatnot. -

I did consider starting one myself, but it would have to be strictly on the basis that nobody shared anything more than the barest plot/character details because it's only too easy to copy something else subconsciously plus I was wondering if there might be an official one started anyway once submissions were open.
As for my effort, I have around 13k words so far but I'm waiting now until I see the detailed rules before I go any further, I don't want to get caught out by unforeseen restrictions like it having to be submitted on maximal-quality feypaper (apologies to those poor souls not following Bookworm).
-
@Anti-i25 yeah, I might be at 10K, too. But my setting is pretty non-descript and the tone is sort of uneven. Thatâs the thing about only having messed around with fan-fictionâthose things are already done for you. Now I have to think about world-building and describing scenery and whatnot. Even putting together something that is original but tropey is a lot more work.
@Lily-Garden Character sheets? âyikesâsounds so organized! ;)
I think Mike Tyson said, âeveryone has a planâuntil they get hit.â Thatâs pretty much the way my plots and characters workâI start with a plot and some charactersâand then the characters pretty much ignore everything I have planned out for them (and somehow I end up being the one getting beat up!)Anyway âitâs so nice to hear from folksâhave fun and good luck!

You know, that's it. That's the problem I'm running into in a nutshell. How many tropes does a LN need to qualify as a LN? Worried that I didn't have enough, I added a brocon imouto just in case đ

Just put âVillainessâ somewhere in the title and I think youâll be safe âyes, even if itâs BL (wait, that sounds more interesting than the thing I am working on âArrg!)
