I Shall Survive Using Potions (Light Novel) Vol 9 licensing
-
Is there any word when I Shall Survive Using Potions (Light Novel) Volume 9 might be getting licensed and translated? It came out in Japan back in the beginning of March, with the new anime airing I was hoping we might get an announcement or something soon.

Hello,
No set date for when Volume 9 will start pre-publication on the site right now. For a general overview on how new volume starts are handled at J-Novel Club, please see the following topic:

Thank you

@Matreyu did you read and enjoy volume 8? Number 7 left me with such a distaste that I have avoided reading 8. When I saw the delay time with 9 and the consensus that 7 was horrible, I figured the series was rightfully dropped since I also haven't seen any good opinions of 8.
Can you give me an honest opinion on 8?

@igounfazed I just read it a second time a couple days ago having restarted reading all the books after watching the first couple anime episodes and enjoyed it fine, I guess the dynamic changes a bit after the time skip once her friends join her and the author uses a few more pop culture reference jokes between the characters since the main character finally has more people that understand them but I was okay with that. But I'm a bit of a sucker for all of FUNA's works and am up to date on all 3 of his series, when I run out of official translations I switch to fan translations, when I run out of them like with this series I'm just continuing to read the story by pumping the original web novel through Google translate and doing my best to interpret what happens next through the broken English it generates, but I still enjoy even that so I'm probably too rabid a fan to give an unbiased opinion. I give up on very few light novel series, especially once I'm past the first couple books.
I'm curious, what did you find so distasteful about book 7, that was the rescuing more orphans and Kyoko introduction right? I'll admit, the introduction of sci fi spaceships and other future level tech was pretty silly but so were some of the "potion containers".

@Matreyu Thanks for an honest answer. I get the feeling we are alike in a way, at least with my infatuation with Ascendance of a Bookworm. I have gone as far as reading forums discussing the end of the series and still read each volume upon release without issue. So I get what you are saying.
To answer you: It feels like a rehash of the same story with the addition of characters that do not add anything to the main character. I understand the MC isn't intelligent, but by herself, with the way the story was told, it was acceptable. Her Japanese friend in 7 added nothing unique or mediocre to the story, other than being a nuisance to the MC's tirades. The MC's new exaggerated character flaw, where she asked what people are saying within earshot because she 'didn't quite hear' is a bit grating after the first couple of times it was done. It's like dealing with a real life friend that sucks at telling jokes, but keeps trying no matter how much you want them to stop.
The MC can do anything her Japanese friends can do, plus more, as her cheat skill is so overpowered that she can factually become a god like Celeste if she wanted to; so using Kyoko to cast spells like invisibility just serves to take away from the MC without good enough reason. And if you think about all the things the 'Item Box' can do... Then Kyoko really becomes irrelevant.
It's like in the Walking Dead tv show, where all the main characters had alzheimer's every new season and would die when they could just cover themselves in zombie blood or put jaw-less zombies on a leash to escape... Yet... they don't, and then they die. The MC seems to have been turned into that very thing: Dumb on purpose. With the purpose being story extension to something that ended, and ended well (even though she could have just put that boulder inside her item box instead of her self).
That's the short version of my 'wall-of-gripes'. Sorry.

@igounfazed Ha, I totally understand your obsession with Ascendance of a Bookworm, I've gone through the series to the end twice myself, again using google translate on the webnovel, it's a great story, one of my all time favourites and I'm so glad it stuck the landing, something you so rarely see with these light novels.
With Survive Using Potions, you're right that the new characters add very little, I've caught up to the current end of it's webnovel now (new chapters are still coming out) and both of her friends from Earth don't really do much and the story does start to repeat with the whole looking after more orphans and silly adventures that make no sense, not wanting attention lest nobles attack them but also building a highly lucrative business network with nobles that invites attacks from others. It certainly doesn't feel like it's leading anywhere, there's no overarching purpose for the characters except to hang out and have fun and the plot threads do start getting looser or discarded at points. You did well to spot it back in book 7.

@Matreyu Thanks... I even tried reading it a second time and found myself feeling the same. I feel kind of bad thanking you for this though... It's like saying, "Hey, thank you for wasting your time instead of me wasting my time." Seems like prick thing to say, but... You have saved me from wasting any more of my time with this story. I kind of wish someone would release a fan edit of volume 6 that includes what happens in the 70 year item box stay and concludes the story there.
I have actually thought about this quite a bit, and even made some third grade level story ideas for this, but... is there a story, (light novel), wherein the MC's only cheat skill is an Item Box like Kauros? Her item box is soooo OP!!! She can literally put an invading army all within her item box, in whole or in part (like their weapons an armor only). I even thought that releasing things from the item box could be released as you may wish, since her item box can release things in portions, so maybe it could release things in different combinations so long as the materials are in there. Obviously the MC would start off as being disregarded for having their only skill be [Item Box]. ??? Anyway... That's just a thought, but if there is a story that you know of along this Item Box Cheat Skill, please let me know.

@igounfazed Saving 80,000 Gold for my Retirement in Another World has a main character with an "item box¹" that abuses the hell out of it for all kinds of things (like making statues by transporting only the relevant part of a rock, healing sickness by transporting a person without the germs, etc). Unfortunately it's by the same author as Potions.
I Said to Make my Abilities Average in the Other World has a MC with an infinite item box like Kaoru's. She's not as good at abusing it though, and mostly uses it for normal item box stuff (i.e. storing things). Also by the same author. I guess this author has a penchant for item boxes (or workalikes).
Kuma Kuma Kuma Bear has a main character with an item box. Not the same author, and really much better storytelling. :-) Her item box is in her white bear-puppet glove (so the bear puppet eats stuff or spits it out, lol).
Can't think of any other examples off the top of my head but I know there's a lot out there.
.
¹ she doesn't actually have an item box, but comments at one point that "the Earth might as well be my item box" because she can transport things between the isekai world and Earth and back, and tends to store stuff on random Pacific islands or in her apartment in Japan.

For some reason, I have it in my head that Kumanano is just an alt-alias of FUNA. I'm not sure where this conspiracy theory comes from, and I have zero evidence I can cite for it, but it seems plausible to me.

Funny thing about this one is she eventually enables her three non-transmigrated friends the low rank noble girl, merchants daughter and farmers daughter to access a shared infinite item box and they do consider all the wacky ways it can be exploited when the ditzy yet genius reincarnated girl doesn't.

Hello,
We have drifted quiet far off-topic.
I am going to lock this topic down since Volume 9 has started pre-publication.
I will also move the posts to a more appropriate topic.
