Why are novel parts so short?
-
Some of the novels seem to have ridiculously short parts. It can make following prepub quite uncomfortable. Is this caused by too many novels and too few translators? How does j-novel decide the number of parts that a novel will be cut into?

@Orokushi J-Novel Club contracts with a large number of translators and editors who have varying degrees of experience, work efficiency, and life situations. Most of our freelancers do not work exclusively for us, or solely on a single project at a time. Some books are simply short; a lot of light novel series have quite a high page count nowadays, but there are still some that clock in under 250 pages. All of these factors combined can result in some books having smaller average parts than others.
Then there are also part splitting considerations; many teams are unable to split their books into evenly sized parts because there aren't convenient places to end parts (e.g. readers wouldn't enjoy being left hanging in the middle of a conversation or fight scene), so some parts end up being shorter than others in the same book.
The prepublication experience isn't for everyone, and it doesn't work well for every book. If you find reading in parts uncomfortable, it may be worth waiting until the book is fully translated to read it, such as when all the parts are available, or the final retail release.

@myskaros Thank you for the answer.

I am the opposite preferring short Parts. Shorter parts help when you are streaming a lot of books.
