Time to Turn Up the Heat with July's Catchups!
-
Tired of playing in the sun all day? Then we've got just the books for members to read back inside!
With a new season of anime here, read up all the source material before seeing it play out in action! Or if the show interested you but you can't bear to wait a week between episodes, continue the story with these catchups! Seirei Gensouki, the manga adaptation of How a Realist Hero Rebuilt the Kingdom, and My Next Life as a Villainess can all be read from volume 1!
Also in the mix are a couple shorts, for those too busy to dive into an epic. How about a sci-fi reincarnation misunderstanding comedy? Me, a Genius? I Was Reborn into Another World and I Think They’ve Got the Wrong Idea! is pretty much what it says on the tin! And Yume Nikki: I Am Not in Your Dream is a one-shot horror novel about a girl who has bizarre dreams...which she might be sharing with something else.
Over 30 volumes of content to read for July! Better get reading if you want to read them all!

Hey! Since when do you change catch-ups I'm the middle of the week ?! :'( I thought I had until Monday...
-
@bacondragon Only when the 1st of a month changes on a weekend, but we've always changed on the 1st when possible.
-
@myskaros Ok, Im Not gonna complain that I don't get something for free. Just to be clear.
-
Some great stuff on catchup this month. Unfortunately for me I've already read all those titles with the exception of "Me, a Genius?" which I think I'll give a read.
I remember the last time Spirit Chronicles was on catchup was what got me to sign up for a membership which was January of 2020 maybe? 2019 possible? I just remember it being January.

It's fun. The protagonist is very slightly like Demon Lord Retry and Greatest Cleric in that his cheat skill is S-ranked good luck. He does have other skills and isn't an idiot though.
People complain about volume 3 ending with a lot of loose ends because the series was cancelled, but it didn't feel like a cliffhanger to me. I wish there was more but I'm glad I read it.

So those of you who have read Seirei Gensouki, should I try to read the first volume before the anime comes out? I haven't decided whether I should read the LN first or just check out the anime first
-
@lily-garden - I'd read the LNs. I can't think of any anime adaptation in the last 5+ years that hasn't chopped away many of the fun or interesting details from the LN to fit the format.
And if they try to cram more than 3 volumes in it gets way too rushed, like Kuma Kuma Kuma Bear which was a highlights reel from the LNs without a lot of the in-between fun.
The only time I'll watch an anime first these days is if I tried and didn't like the LN for some reason, or if I thought it wouldn't be my cup of tea.
For example, Bofuri I skipped the LNs because it's purely "playing in a VRMMO" like Gun Gale Online, without the twists and mysteries of Infinite Dendrogram or Log Horizon. I probably missed some good content, but "playing an ordinary game" isn't something I care about reading.
And for Demon Lord Retry I'd given up on the LN after reaching the part where the MC's goofy second character appeared. That kind of farce was a lot easier for me to put up with in the anime.
-
@harmlessdave I don't know that I'd call Bofuri's VRMMO an "ordinary game". More like it's an undertested mess of a game that's far too easy to break wide open.

Just like two MMOs I play: Fallout 76 and Star Trek Online :)

@lily-garden An honest assessment we gave to someone recently, is that the first 3 volumes are kinda the buildup for the rest of the series. 1st volume has some serious doormat MC problems, so having issues with it wouldn't mean disliking the rest of the series.
I do think it's worth trying since it's on catchup, but if it doesn't grab you, looking at it again when the anime comes out is worth it.
-
We're never getting Netoge if Bofuri is seen as ordinary and uninteresting. T_T

I did enjoy the anime, it just didn't make me want to read the LNs.

I'm just waiting for the site to translate the last two volumes of How a Realist Hero Rebuild the Kingdom. Volumes 14 and 15.

Hello,
Since it has come up, I will take this time to direct any users who may have questions regarding new volume starts, to the future volume release topic.
Thank you

Volume 14, part 4 of Seirei Gensouki is giving me a “You are not allowed to read this part
EDIT: Not sure if you guys fixed it or I was only half logged in for some reason, but it’s working now. -

Interesting... I read the first volume and most or all of the second before it became the first series I've ever actively dropped, and one of the few in total. I didn't care for the MC and was generally bored with everything. It sounds like that wasn't just me though, if you are saying that things don't really get onto an even keel until volume 4 and beyond.
While I do hold with the "read the book first" belief for most things, be they anime, movies, or TV shows, I might have to watch a bit if it and see if there is anything more to the story to make it worth getting back to.

Hey folks! Since August 1st is on a weekend, catchups will be changing on Monday, August 2nd, around 11 AM Pacific/1800 UTC! So you've still got a week to finish checking out this month's catchup series!
-
It's saying they're expired for me. I want to finish reading bakarina...
Anyone else having this problem?
