Petition for English physical copy Backstabbed in a Backwater Dungeon: My Trusted Companions Tried to Kill Me, But Thanks to the Gift of an Unlimited Gacha I Got LVL 9999 Friends and Am Out For Revenge on My Former Party Members and the World

Just started watching this series and I really hate reading e books I only collect and read physical copies. Theres gotta be some other weirdos out there like me who only read physical so would love to see this series get a physical copy.

Digital sales are significant when determining if there will be a print edition.
J-Novel stresses this all the time; titles that don't do well with digital don't get physical. You want a physical copy?
Buy the digital copy to prove the market. -
I can understand how things work from JNC perspective but having to buy something I don't want to get something I want never sounded really convincing to me.

shrug Convincing or not, it’s reality.
Paper print runs are expensive for a digital publisher. It’d be insane for a publisher to go to that expense with a series selling poorly in digital.
-
buying a kindle after Christmas the buy the digital for this and for another novel that's digital only. Stupid but if it's all I got it's all I got lol.
-
@gokuzz I wouldn't necessarily recommend a kindle for that (they certainly do the job, but Amazon can be quite controlling about what you can put on them and how). Might be worth taking a browse through some of their competitors' lineups - like Kobo or Onyx - to see if you like one of those ereaders better.
(I'm assuming you're gonna get an ereader because you don't want to read books on a PC or phone. I use a Kobo Sage for my longer reading sessions for pretty similar reasons...)
-
@gokuzz - It's true the Kindle doesn't accept any DRM books except Amazon DRM, but they have made it really easy to send a JNC or Baen or other DRM-free epub to the device.
This web page lets you browse to the epub then they add it to your kindle, it's even easier than using the free Calibre software since you don't need to connect the kindle to your PC: https://www.amazon.com/sendtokindle
Also, the "with ads" Kindle just means it shows a book ad on the power off/on screen. There are no ads that interrupt your reading.

I don't think the expectation is that someone should have to buy the digital in hopes that it sells well enough for print, but if you have friends who read digital you can recommend this series, you can write reviews on anime or book sites, you can tweet about new volumes, etc. There are other ways to spread the word than personally investing your own money!

@kuali Thank you for the info. I'll have to look up those, I didnt even think about another brand its just the only e reader ive heard of.
-
@HarmlessDave thank you also for the info now ill have to do some research before making my decision I appreciate the help
-
@myskaros it also seems that most people don't read light novels they lean more towards mangas more so but as I got older I just prefer light novels now and can't read mangas any more cause they're just too quick. But yeah I can see spreading the world about it can help to but I dont do any social media and all my friends dont read anything but the words on a meme lol

Within my own local anime enthusiast friends group I'm the odd one out for mostly reading lns rather than manga.

Digital sales are significant when determining if there will be a print edition.
For context it was stated back in 2018 that a rule of thumb was that they needed around 5,000 digital sales per volume to justify investing in a LN print run and they needed to be able to confident that their minimum print run of 3,000 would sell. I'm guessing things have gotten more expensive since then so the numbers could well be higher.
-
@Shiny Manga is faster to consume and get all the main points, so that's hardly surprising people who gravitate towards that medium if they don't have time to read a whole book. Problem is a lot of manga is released as a teaser for the LN so they just wrap up after 3-4 volumes.
-
If JNC was still independent I could see a Kickstarter model working for niche series if there were enough fans willing to pay extra to make print volumes happen.
Some of the attempts might fail if (made up numbers) only 100 fans are willing to pre-pay $60 for printed volumes of 1-3 and JNC needed at least 400 to cover the print run.
-
@jpwong same with a lot of anime. Its so frustrating you watch a good show then it just ends up being a trailer for the LN

Even when they were independent, several staff said they were unlikely to do another Kickstarter after how much effort was involved in the Rokujouma one.
