I want to recommend a novel (Series) to people that enjoyed "The Banner of the stars" or "Legends of the Galactic Hereos" this is another space opera set in a Universe were the human race is at war, with several other alien species that only think of humans as food.

The Series is Old Man's War by John Scali. So far I read the first two volumes in the series: Old's Man War and The Ghost Brigade. My thoughts on the first book were that I liked the character Old Man pov; it dealt with things like being old and losing your wife, family, romance, losing friends and war.

Even if this is a sci-fi most of the action takes place on the ground space battles served only as intro to the actual fighting on land. The technology was interesting and the races presented are different physically with have unique culture. Aliens are fun to name a few we have crab people, roaches people, bird people, spider with giraffe heads people.

The second book is in the point of view of another character; a "clone", and becoming a real person being able to do choices etc.

Worth checking out if you into this genre. After finishing all the six volumes I am planning to start the Honor Harrington series another space opera

Scalzi also has some wickedly funny stuff out there- anyone who has a history with fandom of space-opera/ Star Trek will find parts of Redshirts hilarious (and the book as a whole has dramatic moments and is a good story even if you don't care about Star Trek/ trekkies)

      I read banned books

There are a few series I'd like but i doubt they will be licenced by anyone. But you never know so ill post them here.

        1. Campione
        2. World break aria curse of holy swordsman
        3. High school dxd
        4. Bofuri I don't want to get hurt so ill max out my defence (anime was awesome and series 2 already announced as it was popular yet No one has the license yet)
        5. 8th son are you kidding me
        6. Aesthetica of a rogue hero
        7. Lord marksman and vanadis
        8. Wisemans grandson

There are others but if i list them all I'll be here for hours πŸ˜‰ lot of isekai books listed as I've recently been reading a bunch. I listed ones that have animes out so if you haven't seen them you should as they are great. 1 and 2 were awesome series and I'd love to find out what happens next but fan translations aren't great so i have up on them.

                    Release That Witch

Does it have an official release?
NU says it's licensed by someone called Webnovel, but on their RTW page there is a post in reviews saying "As a professional team, we're earnest in translating this awesome novel. Every translator did self-checking after finishing each chapter, which will then be examined" which looks like a huge red flag for me.

@AlexUsman It's on Webnovel, which is for all intents and purposes a legitimate platform. It's owned by Tencent, though, so you may have personal reservations about them.

@myskaros thanks. It was just their site doesn't really look like an official licensor site and more like some FanTL aggregator.

I was just reading Unwanted Undead Adventurer. It is pretty good (although there are some moments where it repeats itself in different ways for 3 to 5 paragraphs, but when you notice it you can gloss over that part). I would give it an 8/10. It is Adventure, Fantasy, Mystery, Weak to Strong.

I just finished up Lazy Dungeon Master and now I'm looking to start a new series. Like the last 6 series have been fantasy and 4 or so have been isekai, so I'd like to avoid either of those genres. Is there anyone of the ones listed below that people could recommend? This is basically the order in which I have an interest, but if Infinite Stratos is as on the nose as Sexiled, I don't think I would want that one.

                                Infinite Stratos
The Combat Baker and Automaton Waitress
                                Beatless
                                Full Metal Panic!

                                Shift World Web Novel

Combat baker is an interesting alternate history/sci fi mix.I only read the first two volumes (wasn't quite to my liking, personally), but it does pack a decent amount of action and intruige intspersed with a bit of slice-of-life to break things up.

Infinite Stratos is one of those "boy in an all girls school" stories. Really not my style, not going to comment further because I can't give it a fair trial.

Likewise, I can't give Beatless a fair trial, as I dropped it halfway through the first volume. If I had to list similar stories, only Clockwork Planet comes to mind, but this is less steampunk and more cyber than that.

Full Metal Panic! is a classic. I haven't actually read the books, but if the anime is anything to go by, it is a well-written story with plenty of millitary sci-fi action, mixed with a bit of fluff, usually involving the main character getting in trouble for handling everyday problems with military agressiveness. Includes plenty of overdeveloped giant humanoid battle mechs.

Infinite Stratos has hilarious moments, and I liked the Anime, but I am not a fan of the last couple of volumes...I'm looking forward to next one being the last (does that make sense?)

First 4 volumes of Combat Baker were good - I'm not caught up on most recent volume

                                    I read banned books

@db0ssman I'm not aware of much good science fiction in translated LNs, but most of my SF reading is from western novelists. It feels like 90% of translated LNs are fantasy and most of them are isekai.

For anyone not burned out on fantasy, a couple of non-JNC series:

Kuma Kuma Kuma Bear - 2 volumes released + volume 3 out July 30 - cute, light, bear-y fluffy isekai about a girl in another world in her bear onesie. Infinite Dendro fans might enjoy reading the adventures of "sister bear".

Woof Woof Story - 3 + volume 4 out next week - another fluffy isekai, crossing Abilities Average with Fel from Campfire Cooking. An overworked salaryman asked to be reincarnated as a pampered pet dog to live the lazy life, but the goddess decides on her own definition of "dog", a Fenrir.

                                      JNC SF:

I enjoyed the 3 volumes of "Me, a Genius?" but the series was not finished in Japan so the plot threads in volume 3 will never be resolved.

Damn I'm hooked on this series. Just thinking how many more days until Monday and whole Monday is waiting for the new chapters to arrive. I just re-read all the published books and p3v1 pre-pubs too, so it might be too early to do it again. I don't know how the people who read only published light novels manage to do it. How do they survive?

I'll have to try to find other things to be hooked on, so I can think about something else too.

Potion Loli is another good one to read if you need a distraction πŸ˜‚

Bookworm is well written for an isekai LN and its not afraid to do it's own thing. Most isakai give us a young male protagonist that wakes up being able to 1 hit an elder dragon while it rains waifu, where as Bookworm gives us sick little idealist girl who loves books and takes on the unfair dogma of a medieval classist society.

If you are looking for another interesting isekai on here that marches to the beat of its own drum, I recommend Otherside Picnic. I have read a lot of LNs and it stands out as one of the most unique isekai I've come across.

If you are looking for excellent Japanese novels in general which have been properly translated then I Had That Same Dream again and At Night, I Become a Monster are both pretty amazing.

Since Bookworm is only the second LN I ever read, I think it gave me a really unfair standard to hold other LN to. That also holds true with the quality of the writing itself too, not just how well structured and deep the story is.
