[New Life+] Young Again in Another World Light Novel Shipments Halted
-
"The Asahi Shimbun newspaper reported on Wednesday that the publisher Hobby Japan decided that day to cancel shipments of MINE's [New Life+] Young Again in Another World (Nidome no Jinsei o Isekai de) light novel series. MINE has recently been involved in a controversy over his alleged insults and discriminatory remarks directed at China and South Korea, along with allegedly discriminatory content within the story of the novels themselves."
~ANN articleWell, that's that. The anime was cancelled too. I guess JNC won't be able to get the rest of the series now? Unless Hobby Japan brings them back if MINE fixes the problematic content?
What do you guys think about this? Was it the right thing to do because of the author's racist comments or should an author's work be separated from his personal life? Can they be separated?
-
I'm fine with canceling it.
I just hope it doesn't harm JNC, with Amazon and stuff.

You can't really separate the monetary help and publicity you are giving the author with your purchases. Separating the "art from the artist" is a whole other concern though, and obviously people are able to do that in circumstances.
I really liked the setup of this series. So sad. ={

This is actually really scary. J-Novel needs to publish New Life+ Vol 3 ASAP otherwise Amazon could mess up the entire business.
-
lol, we were trying to figure out the spy was on Discord who screenshotted that and posted it on all the message boards.
-
Hopefully, he can get it out soon as possible, as the Final is next week. Even in rough form, at this point I doubt people who bought it will mind.
-
@legitpancake OMG, what a mess.
-
Wasn’t me. I’m not even in the Discord.
-
@legitpancake I think we're about to see why attorneys that specialize in Intellectual Property rights make obscene amounts of money. I'm getting a headache just thinking about all the legal entanglements involved here.
-
JNC apparently licenses on a volume by volume basis, so as long as they get the novel out so Amazon doesn't go hinky, hopefully it'll be okay.
-
I had a thought. Didn't the editors at Hobby Japan read all of his stuff and basically say "Ok. We'll publish this."?

Oh wow, that's really bad.
Thankfully I buy the premium ebooks so it won't affect me at least if it does happen :P

Yes, but they probably didn't scour through the author's tweets. The biggest issue was the tweets, and certain passages in the novel take on a different meaning in light of that context.
-
How JNC respond to this could be interesting - I imagine that JNC will be leaned on heavily to remove the books, and how they respond will have ramifications for future licensing deals.
-
I just wonder if this will impact anything in the future too licensing wise. Will JNC try to avoid anything controversial? Anything unfinished? Anything super lengthy? IDK. I hope not too much.
-
If HJ pull the rug out from under JNC and Amazon bans them for pre-orders, that'd suck big time. Not like JNC are in much position to complain when they were tied the largest source of material last I saw a list. "Pay me compo" "ok, no more licences" etc
-
I feel sorry for JNC if they have to shut this down, especially translator and editor right now - all that effort and hard work down the drain for book 3, and it was so close to being released and being the next paycheck! I mean timing couldn't have been much worse for JNC!
-
Bottom line. If you want a copy of [New Life +], buy it and download it now, because it might not be available tomorrow.
-
If J-Novel couldn’t put up pre-orders on Amazon for a year, does that mean they could just upload the entire book and put it up for sale for each series at the usual time? Or does that literally mean they can’t sell anything new for a year?

This was probably already covered in the other thread, but the author(?) MINE did apologize.

He is going to delete the apology and his whole Twitter post history (the whole account?) later, so best to read it now if you know Japanese.
It sounds like maybe, if you know Japanese and the author cares to finish it, you'll be able to read an edited version on Syosetu in the future. He wants to start talks with the publisher about editing content already in the books I guess.
