Of their novels, I'm buying Index, NGNL and Log Horizon.
Yen's novel translations are hit-or-miss for me but the titles above are fine IMO.
I didn't like their The Devil is a Part-Timer! TL so I opted to collect the fan translations for that one.
If they end up not doing anything with Index past vol.22, I've already got everything up to vol.18 of the sequel on my computer.And, personally, I see VIZ as the worst company (Still waiting for the last three Naruto Hiden novels, probably in vain!).

@aruseus493 I disagree. "at times"? They are fucking bad at whatever they do. Just look at NGNL? A whole mess since it started publication. Shitty translator, no editor whatsoever, shitty localization. Mahouka? Why would you hire a translator who has not a fucking idea of what the series is about? Then you go and hire an editor who's basically on the same boat. I mean, how do you mess a series plot so bad since volume 1. How much of an idiot you've got to be to pull that off?

Whenever a company starts losing money is when they realize something is wrong and needs to be fixed, either the do it or disappear (TokyoPOP). You're paying for their stuff, there never should be something like "hit-or-miss". Everything should be a hit since you're not getting it for free. In these circumstances "pirates" are getting a better value for their money.

I believe that the english light novel market needs some more "Senki" light novels: Grancrest Senki (Record of Grancrest War) and Arslan Senki (The Heroic Legend of Arslan) for example.

@mmkop My position is similar to that of @Aruseus493. YP has the licensing exclusivity from Kadokawa that makes them very difficult to compete against. I personally think that JNC is starting to get close to the point where they will be seen as legitimate competition for YP. After all, three (more) JNC titles are being made into anime, and I haven't counted how many have already been made into anime.

@doublemangekyo I'm halfway through So I'm a Spider Vol. 2 and the lack of editing is abysmal. The worst it has to offer so far is translating a skill as [Height of Evil] in a paragraph, and in the next one, barely 4 lines later, it's written as [Height of Occultism]. I can accept typos, shit happens, but inconsistencies of this degree are unacceptable. I won't even mention the fact that the skill name should be [Magic Supremacy] and the "official translation" fails to convey that meaning.
YP doesn't deserve my money at all with their horrible products... but it's either that or never getting to read some light novels, I wish my japanese was good enough to fully read novels on a regular basis but I'm nowhere near close.

Well, thanks to this last incident, I’m beginning understand why
I hear Monster Girl Doctor was the worst edited light novel to date... So looking forward to reading that..
Do Yen Press update their digital offerings' grammar / editing after release?

There is no prologue in either volumes 1 or 2, and I flipped through the first few pages of the first couple chapters and don't see what you're talking about. Not to say I don't believe you, rather hoping you can point me in a more specific location to see if my copy also has this error :x

It's the first page of the story on digital store. The line is the first of the 5th paragraph.

Well, it's not in the print edition, and I checked the "read the first few pages" thingy on Amazon and don't see anything either :x

Looks like the "Shinmai Maou No Testament" LN series won't get an official English release

@xftg123 it's also the last volume I believe, and the main story ended on the previous volume so the author just let himself loose for the epilogue I guess
