@deemerald Considering said translator is charging for early access to chapters, I hope he gets shut down for that scum-behavior. Would much prefer it to be licensed.

@aruseus493 hmm. Never knew that. Normally i follow 20 different things at the same time and just switch between them constantly, not really minding whether something comes out early or late

I think it'd be good practice to at least have the Syosetu tab open for the individual chapter you're reading translated.

For anything that has an official release in Japan, I'd grab the Light Novels off of Bookwalker. There are ways to support the author while still reading unofficial translations.

Speaking of Syosetu, I've been realizing that a lot of stuff that gets published but cancelled doesn't necessarily disappear off of Syosetu and in fact sometimes continues for a long time after. I wonder if any English publisher could do a halfway translation (translate the available LN, then switch to the WN; I'd say forget the LN, but these relationships with official pubs are really important not to burn, and you'd lose all that art too)?

@deemerald said in Novel pick-up requests:

The New gate is done by an official translater, but illegally.

I'm not familiar with the circumstances in this case; out of curiosity, what makes the person doing it an "official" translator?

@hatguy12 I'm not really that sure if he is official. I dont know the specifics so that post could be Horribly wrong, but there was at least one time they hired an official one i believe

Are Overlap easy to work with? I think I requested The New Gate a long time ago, but apparently that one is from a publisher J-novel can't work with or something... I see that the other two of the things I requested are from Overlap.

Edit: The manga for both of the overlap titles are very popular, I won't be surprised if Yen Press try to poach the two...

@kino the first 2 publishers JNC worked with are Hobby Japan and OverLap.

So requests from there are just marginally more likely.

Small percentage like .00000000000000001% more likely

Sorry but J-Novel Club does not publicly comment on any potential licensing decision or acquisitions.

IIRC, Sam once said that The New Gates's publisher AlphaPolis does not yet have an International Licensing department that could handle licensing for other languages making it impossible to license any series they have even if its not JNC who wants to license them.

Edit: I found post the where Sam mentioned this.

on the illegal fan-translation vs. official translations fight, I stand in the middle ground. While I do read fanslations, (I mean, that's how I started reading light novels), I try more often than not to buy the licensed version, the only thing holding me back most of the time is just there being e-book formats or not, since importing physical boks to my country gets way too costly, but if it has an e-book I'd take it asap.

But then there's a ton of series that never got an official license, and some are pretty good, so the mentality that "I only read official translations" is lost on me. I'm pretty sure we're never going to see Campione or Horizon in the Middle of Nowhere licensed, and only recently would I think a license for Date a Live, High School DxD or Oda Nobuna no Yabou to be plausible.

This really sucks, AlphaPolis have some decent things. Kadokawa isn't an option either, this really really sucks...

@xftg123 got it so if I find fan translations of borderline hentai light novels I should consider myself lucky.

@galactuskahn24 If you find yourself translations of an actual light novel (not a web novel), you should consider yourself lucky. If you find borderline-hentai stuff (Like Magika no Kenshi which is pretty much soft-core porn or Campione! which has lewdest kisses ever.), consider yourself having struck rare gold.

FYI there is a fan translator that translates Hentai Light Novels. Not borderline but pure hentai and has images just like a normal light novel.

@bartzbb yeah, they got the Harem series and Shishunki na Adam, don't know what other series they have, but Shishunki is quite a good read aside from the sex scenes lol.

The only thing I feel bad for with official translators, such as Yen Press, is that even though any LN series they get is licensed by them, people still find a way to look for illegal fan translations.

The only series I can think of that does so is "Mahouka". The series is licensed, which will definitely take a while for YP to get to the latest volumes. However, fans of the series still find ways to read the latest volume in the series. Whether it's from a download, someone PM'ing the link to them, or a person is secretly translating the series.

                                          Primitive Wizard

Protagonist spent his life trying to find real magic. Upon his death though, he reincarnates as a Dragon in a fantasy world finally giving him wish. His next goal, to establish an Academy to teach magic. Big problem though is that the fantasy world he reincarnated in has humanity at a cave-man stage with little to no real language. It features comedy, romance, and slice of life with a touch of action as the protagonist explores magic and tries to teach it to others.

I find it to be a surprisingly enjoyable series that actually addresses a drama plot-point I see rarely addressed.

@Aruseus493 I'm so tempted to click the spoiler, but I won't. Stuff like New Life +'s little twist / spin is what I live to discover and be surprised by in literature.

While I'm here, I saw this new novel pop up. I was interested because the protagonist is a bit hefty. But it sounds like he might not remain hefty forever...

Suddenly he is summoned as a brave man in a different world one day. However, the status is less than an ordinary person, and it is aborted as a pig bastard from a disappointed soldier of a different world. As a result, Haruhiko is forcibly repatriated to Japan, but the princess of another world was accidentally caught there! To return her to the former world, Haruhiko should lose her ideal weight of 58 kg and release the gate to the other world. So, the two grand diet plans were to come to an end!
