          Let's do another theme.

          Competition of Publishers

Pick a series from another publisher, and pick something you consider similar for J-Novel Club to compete with.

            @aruseus493

To compete with KonoSuba, I'd go with Kono Sekai ga Game da to Ore dake ga Shitteiru. Both series feature a similar style of over the top absurd comedy. But I've requested this one before.

So instead, let's compete with Sword Art Online with an obscure title I've dug up. :3

Death Game kara Hajimeru MMO Slow Life

            Publisher: Fujimi Shobo

We've seen Sword Art Online where the first arc is about escaping a death game. We've gotten The New Gate (fan-translated) which is about going from a death game to an Isekai series. Now let's have a Death Game where the protagonist isn't even trying to end it. Death Game kara Hajimeru MMO Slow Life from what I could dig up about it, is a slice of life series where the protagonist is living a romcom/harem life inside the game.

              Overlap:

For this ^ May want to do some finagling to get the Syosetu chapters licensed since the physical novel is likely cancelled, but the Syosetu has continued to be updated to the present.

              Ichijinsha:

We can compete with titles that aren't out in English yet, right? =P

Ok, another kinda cliche Request at this point (I lost track how many times even I made this request):

Chivalry of a Failed Knight (Rival Asterisk War)
                alt text

A great series where there is a real romantic relationship that actually goes somewhere.

@drone205 To this day I can't understand the reasoning behind licensing the Asterisk War over this. They got an anime adaptation at the same time and this was the superior one by all means!!!!

I wouldn't mind living on the island from LOST.

I just saw this. I like love triangles, but this one is "Bizarre".

I'd like to see "Knights and magic" (it brought me here in my search for light novel translations, as I did not know they existed), but when I've done a search for it, the response given previously is "it's by Hero Bunko" as if that explains everything.

Could someone clue me in please?

@paulnamida To be fair, the Asterisk War LN is really pretty good. The adaptation was fairly lackluster though. A lot of the complaints about Asterisk War is due to either the adaptation or the person just wanting to hate on it. Though I do think personally Chivalry is better.

well, Digibro has a whole Video series about why Asterisk Wars sucks and he gives some genuine reasons why and it involves the writing of the show witch the LN would have (though it is possible it wont be as bad). This video series ends with a 2-part comparison with Chivalry (witch highlights the flaws in Asterisk War even more). I dont believe a person will Hate something because they just want to hate it, though if you go into something expecting to hate it that will influence your opinion; I watched Chivalry expecting to hate it yet I was pleasantly surprised. I believe in a sort of Universal quality, A good series will always be a good series and a bad series will always be a bad series and these series will ultimately reach their quality in the eyes of the general people. To argue the Adaption point, I do think adaption can "ruin" a story but if the adaption remains as faithful as it possibly can than the writing and characters should be at around the same level right? say if The Minotaur Fight in Danmachi had the same animation Quality as SAO fights (SAO fights are really boring, flashy lights don't make good fights), That Minotaur fight would still be good (maybe not great but still good) and this is because of the writing in the fight.

Edit: I believe to some extent you can judge a series by the quality of there fights, this reins true if you compare the Minotaur fight in Danmachi vs the Gleam Eyes fight is SAO too.

Actually, Digibro is the guy I was referring to. Some his stuff is valid, a lot of it isn't in a lot of respects. Some of his examples come off as "THIS SHOW IS TOTALLY NOT REALISTIC! RAR!" Kinda like people who bag on superheroes or bitch about the Endor Holocaust and other stupidity. Not to mention the things he mentions that are actually contradicted by the books and anime itself.

Not saying it's high literature, but it's not nearly as bad as people say. But much like SAO, it became a big meme thing where people liked to bag on Asterisk War to show how developed an anime person they are, not like those PEONS who like that stuff. It's basically virtue signalling, anime-style.

This is a clear case of Strawmaning Digibros's argument but I will let it slide. It would help if you name some specific points he makes and say why they are false.

edited I was snarkier than I should have been, I think, so am rephrasing.

Suffice it to say I don't think it necessary to 'let it slide'. ;) I will note that I do think the Asterisk War adaptation is rather flawed in various ways, but do think Digibro's critique was in some ways biased - which he admits to from time to time himself. :)

I don't care to derail the thread with a long dissertation on Digibro's critique, however, so we'll have to agree to disagree.

Execution Tarot is getting a volume 2. This is a VR Escape Room death game thingamajig I think. Unfortunately, it is Kadokawa, so I'll be submitting my rec to Bookwalker (and I guess Seven Seas).

This also looks like fun. "Is not it true that the brave is too cute and can not be defeated?

                                        http://dengekibunko.jp/newreleases/978-4-04-893855-6/

Basically, the devil goes to stamp out the brave in reality before she comes to the different world, but he falls in love with her instead... I think? That's what I got from Google Translate. This one is brand new.

In terms of the Asterisk War debate, I've always wondered if people have read anything after the anime to see if the novel goes to better places they didn't expect. But hearing the anime basically covers to (through?) volume 6, that would be a long slog of potentially poor content to get through to get there.

I have a hard time understanding people who like Smartphone but bag on Asterisk War. I haven’t seen the anime so can’t comment but have enjoyed the first four books, they’re simple fun Battle School harem stories with largely enjoyable characters. It’s not high art but then something like Smartphone is really just a relaxing pleasure read too, I feel like people who like the one should at the very least understand someone liking the other. If anything IMO, Asterisk War is the better written of the two, helped along by the fact each volume is short and concise.

@the-green-death These are two very different series. This is like saying if you like Log Horizon you should like SAO. even if you compare series that are similar (even if it is just surface level) like comparing Asterisk Wart with Chivalry of a Failed knight or Kuroko no Basket and Haikyuu, they are completely different series even then. Death Note and Code Geass are also compared to each other but I can safely say I like Code Geass much more, Death Note just became kinda bland after ep 7 and even then both series are very very different.
