I saw in a recent news story that the book publisher and Netflix are involved in some legal squabbling

I remember these books from the "scholastic" book fairs when I was a kid. I was wondering with so much LN's having game tie-ins and/or based on dating sims RPGs or other games - has the format of CYOA caught on in any light novels? (In print, I know interactive novels are a thing....)

      if so, any recommendations?

      I read banned books

There is a light novel written by the author of Index that I saw on here that qualifies. Here's the suggestion thread for it.

Your best bet for finding things like that in English are probably visual novels though.

I was going to mention the exact same one, lol.

I think that is what he meant by interactive novels.

I myself have written a few CYOAs, but I don't really like how it flows so I stopped since honestly VNs work better for that kind of thing. I mean, depending on how complicated the CYOA is, you could end up with 500 pages total, but each 'branch' would only be maybe 100 pages. Aka. if you had a game like F/SN where you have 3 primary branches, you need almost a 600 page book for 3 branches to be a 200 page book each.

I think I'm not the only one that felt that in physical form, the limitations were just too high to be effective. Plus, having to turn the pages back and forth kind of interrupts the flow.

Winning isn't really that fun if you want a challenge... Making others win, on the other hand...

There was an Attack on Titan one recently, it even got an English translation if I recall.

I see others pop up from time to time in Japanese too...there are a couple for popular manga like Seven Deadly Sins and Fairy Tail, a bunch based off the Dragon Quest games, as well as a lot of original ones and translations of English series.

I didn't know they made choose your own adventure light novel books. I'd totally love to see some of these get licensed in the future. Especially if some are based on manga or anime related properties. Original stories would be great as well.

I've heard White Album 2's novelization has endings you can pick in the last volume, but I'm not sure.

I actually got into a discussion about that with Cross Inf on Twitter because they mentioned one of the books they published basically has two separate almost full length novels for the two characters of choice, "Obsessions of an Otome Gamer" iirc.

Any interest in visual novels? I didn’t see an open thread...

You could create one. I'd be up for it. Need more motivation to read through some of mine (Punch Line + White Album 2).

Post it in the Games section.
