The girl who ate a death god / 死神を食べた少女
-
Title: Shinigami wo Tabeta Shoujo
Author: Nanasawa Matari
Artiste: Chomoran
Publisher: Enterbrain
Number of volumes : 2
Status: complete, it shares its universe with The girl who bore the flame ring and 2 other series but each is independent
NU MALDescription (from NU) :
"What happens when one eats Death?
Personally, I don’t really know. What I do know is merely one thing.
I’m hungry.
Therefore, I’ll take the heads of these guys and deliver them to my superiors.
Surely, I’ll be able to eat delicious food.
Come, if preparations are in order, we depart. "Since both descriptions on NU aren't very helpful, here's a quick summary:
The novel follows Shera a girl from a poor farming village who after a raid of the kingdom liberation army (rebel) in which she is nearly killed, obtain some strange death powers and join the Kingdom side in the civil war.Why I want it :
It's a really good war story, with good strategy (most of the time), believable battle and overall quite "realistic" despite being in a fantasy setting. Most characters are interesting, their motivations make sense, none of them is totally good or bad and all of them change throughout the story. The MC powers are also quite interesting and the novel finds a good way to keep the tension high despite how powerful she is.
(Micro spoiler, chapter 3)
Why I think it could be a good pick to JNC:
It could appeal to both "side" of JNC readers:- it got an op protagonist who let nobody get in her way
- but it's also a rather grim and deep story, with a realistic tone.
Also, it's a fantasy war novel that we don't have much of.
The ratings on NU are high, the WN being a 4.8/5 for 541 votes.
And it's only 2 volumes so if it fails it's not a big loss and if it sells well there are parent stories by the same author and publisher to capitalize on. -
I think it sounds interesting. I’ll see about checking out the web novel translation later to get a feel for it.
-
I like the sound of this book so I'm giving it a vote in the hopes someone will pick it up.
-
We definitely could use a good war story.
-
Would love to see this one. It was a really good read.
-
A quick bump since I just create a topic for the parent story The girl who bore the flame ring, and update that topic.
-
I've read this one and it's really quite good. It's a dark, low fantasy war story told from the villain or anti-hero's perspective. When I say low fantasy setting I'm referring to stuff like Game of Thrones where there certainly are serious fantasy and supernatural elements, but they are mysterious forces beyond what is seen in common everyday life, the stuff of myths and legends. The fantasy is well grounded and depicted in a much more gritty and realistic light than a high fantasy story where you could wake up as like a God one day and then walk down the street and buy a burger from a lizard man. It has more mature themes and morally grey perspectives than you generally see in a LN. It's not an isekai.
I think perhaps the sort of people who liked Overlord or GOT might like this LN.

After reading the comments here I looked up the web novel and I have to admit it's pretty good.
Hope JNC picks it up.
-
Well now that JNC has connections to Enterbrain (don't know if Altina is the same label though), this one shouldn't be too hard to get, seeing as it's only 2 volumes, and the related series 3 volumes.
-
Sounds like a good read and I like that it’s a duology.
-
I also think this would be a good choice. I read the LNs and they were pretty solid. Plus it's only 2 volumes.
-
Is this available to be read?
Sound very interesting, specially the part of being only 2 volumes and being complete. -
@HB_ You can read the Japanese web novel on syosetu or you can purchase the Japanese light novels on Bookwalker. It is not available to read in English.
-
I have read this one. I quite liked it. Translation was not perfect but then again it was not proffesional work. I would like to add high quality english version to my collection. If you decide to translate it I will definettly buy all books.

Bumping!

J-Novel licensed Death's Daughter and the Ebony Blade, which sounds almost identical enough to this story that it borders on plagiarism... So we'll probably never get this one. Oh well.
-
@Tenome I don't know, personally I'm gonna be optimistic if Death Daughter does well, it could increase the chance of this one being picked up. After all, it's not like JNC never licences similar series.
Plus, while the 2 have a similar story, their tone and characters are quite different. -

Hmmm I only read the beginning of Ebony Blade but those two are fairly different. Only because we have two female MC and a death god doesn't mean it is a carbon copy. Oh and by the tone of what I read I see Ebony blade more as a happy go lucky kind of thing (I remind that I did not read it fully till now) and you can consider "the Girl who ate a Death God" as dark fantasy.

I recently read the WN and had a great time with it. The world building is good and I really enjoy the somewhat more complex and realistic characters/story. It's not simply "These are the good guys and those are the bad guys", but instead makes you think about the ideals, decisions and events. As much as I like my brain-off-feel-good series, it's novels like these that leave a lasting impression and I'd like to see this one getting an official English release.
