Me and my friend the other day were discussing how often the the light novel diverges from the web novel original. However the only examples we could think of were Konosuba and Seirei Gensouki. Can anyone think of other examples where the light novel diverges heavily from the web novel? There have got to more examples than just those two.

Shield hero is the one that I can think of that diverts the most. After volume 4, the stories are quite different, even though they hit the web novel moments at times, but is quite different.

Death march, the start is very different. It still hits a lot of the same points but there is a lot of added content so far.

Mushoku Tensei, volume 7 is entirely new as far as I understand, but I don't know about much more since the English ones have only just started being released.

I heard Overlord web novel didn't have Albedo in it.

Goblin Slayer started as one of those text image thingamajigs. The Goblins were the cockroaches from Terraformars. I think there's some differences in the story, but it does follow a lot of the early stuff to a T, just with different plagiarized characters doing the actions (like Lancer from Fate and that Netero guy from HxH)

@timmaaah For Mushoku Tensei from what i've heard it's doesn't really change anything it's just that the LN show what happen when Rudeus was working as an adventurer, which was just mentioned in the WN.

Do you like death, war and misery ?
Do you like badass op loli who let nobody got in their way ?
            Do you like vengeance story?
If so then then vote for The girl who ate a death god

@raitoiro Ah true. I just took a look through my JP physical and it looks exactly as you say. It just looks like it expands on adventure part of the story before continuing to the school arc as normal in Vol. 8

@timmaaah I am a spider so what, changed a lot from the WN; while Re Zero has been shortened at least by half (and thanks God for that).

Sevens: apparently the LN is quite different with some new characters and the order of some events has been change.

I was reincarnated as a vending machine, also change, but it's mostly that the LN add fluff.

The man pick up by god, the LN is likely different from the WN at least the first version, since the LN is allready the 3th versions of that story.

I also think "The dungeon seeker"'s LN is really different with some arcs being totaly remove or replace.

Most Light Novels change up some details from the web novel, like how Mushoku Tensei added extra volumes, or Death March changes various character intros or reorders content while keeping the story largely the same.
Then there's stuff like "So I'm a Spider, So What?" where after a certain point the story's changes become unrecognizable to the Web Novel.

I know of at least one web novel, "I Reincarnated as a Noble Girl Villainess But Why Did It Turn Out This Way?", where the Light Novel diverged so much from the original, that a certain key character death didn't happen, and the LN ended up concluding three volumes in, while the web novel is still going.

I heard That time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime diverges greatly between the two, but I've only been following the light novels so I couldn't say for myself. (I just read about it in a fairly lengthy post.)

@renofury I personally don't really count Re Zero as diverging since its still following the same plot, its just been condensed (and yes God really does deserve our thanks for that)

@paul-nebeling I haven't read that one, is it heavily condensed too?

@eternal-wanderer That author is infamous for long expositions about trivial matters, like how magic works or the ecology of a dungeon.

@paul-nebeling Well with Re Zero let me put this in perspective, the Re Zero volume 1 light novel is 233 pages. If all the text from the web novel was included the book would probably be at least twice as long. From what I understand what was cut was mostly world building details that could be included later in the story.

The one which comes to mind, since I just read it myself recently, is in Ascendance Of A Bookworm. In the webnovel, the scene where Myne introduces parue-cakes to Lutz's family is from Lutz's point of view, while in the light novel, it's from Myne's. Same events, but we actually see Myne's thought processes as she tries out the parue, but we also lose out on the brief mention that Lutz and his brothers were very worried about Myne trying to cook on a hot stove.

Also there's the part where Myne is extremely angry about her destroyed clay tablets, which was from the viewpoint of Myne's father in the webnovel, but from Myne's viewpoint in the light novel. The webnovel version mostly dealt with the aftermath (since Myne's father was not actually at the scene of the incident), while the light novel version described how it happened.
