A question, sorry if it's been asked before: If the Japanese version of a novel has bonus short stories, does it mean the JNC release of the same volume will have the same short stories?
-
If there was a bonus short story inside the Japanese edition, as in actually in the volume no matter where you purchased it from then yes, the J-Novel Club editions mirror the Japanese release editions when it comes to content.
When you start referring to store exclusive short stories as in, bonus stories only obtained in Japan when you bought the book from a particular store, it becomes more complicated, J-Novel Club tries to get any and all store exclusive bonus short stories when they are available but not all of them make it into the premium editions.
-
@Rahul-Balaggan I see, thanks. That does make it rather tricky (I like planning purchases ahead).
-
@nofairytale You can also see it in the Bonus content list. Arifureta for example states that thex have 6 store exclusive short stories in their first Volume. And I don't see that it really makes the future planning harder. As there is no other western release you don't have much choice except you get the original japanese version from different stores.

Do we know what the extras will be in "When the Clock Strikes Z?" I assume a Glossary of references would be fitting (which trap was seen in which movie, etc). The helmet in part 3 for example reminded me of High School of the Dead where the MC was saved as the zombie had a helmet and could not bite him. And the shovel always reminds me of School-Live. Oh and the part about Zombies still behaving like they used to reminds me also of School-live or Shaun of the Dead.
-
Right now there is no information on what the bonus for that story will be.

Pity.

Okay I am super salty right now. I had a Bookwalker subscription before a J-Novel Club Premium subscription and now I realize I'm missing out on a lot of bonus short stories. Realist Hero; Me? A Genius?; The Magic in the Otherworld is too far behind; Welcome to Japan Ms Elf; All routes lead too Doom. Like I'm super mad. Now I'm going to have to probably spend $192 on J-NovelClub just ot get the stories! ARRRRRRRGH.
Goes mad

@BookManiaReader
A piece of advice. Prioritize Realist Hero.
It has by far the best bonus short stories in all of JNC.
All of them are canon and are most of the time referenced in the main story. So it really feels as if it's part of the story unlike some bonus short stories from other series that does not have a specific time line in the main story. -
@BookManiaReader Are you aware that you have credits in your account right now, if you haven't used them yet? Premium members get a new credit every month on the 15th. Check on your account page: https://j-novel.club/mypage/purchasecredit

@LegitPancake Just found out about the credits. And that helped.

The whole bonus thing is an interesting business custom. I wonder when did this all started.
In case of TO Books, publisher of Bookworm, they attach physical copy of bonus side story to:
- Print book purchased directly from TO Books online store
- Distributed at partner brick and mortar book stores
So, they seems to be strongly promoting print books with their bonus contents.
With Bookworm, they have published one compilation book of short stories gathering those past bonus stories and unpublished Web short stories.
Are these short stories being published in the epilogue for J-Novel Club's releases or are we just not going to get them?

No, those short stories were not included inside the actual volume, they were a separate bonus addition when you purchased the book from a particular store in Japan.
J-Novel Club releases the books with the same content as they were released in Japan, since those stories were not in the actual finalized Japanese book it is not included in the J-Novel Club editions.
are we just not going to get them?
This is going to be a wait and see situation, as that would be a whole separate license, and J-Novel Club does not publicly comment on potential future acquisitions.
-
@BookManiaReader - I'll belatedly second the recommendation to buy Realist Hero first. They are good little stories that are part of the overall story not fluff filler or what-ifs.
Also, if you wait until the October Black Friday sale the book credits will hopefully be $1 off again.
-
I guess this question applies to all premium releases, but to ask about a specific example...
I notice that Bookworm P3V1 premium book is already available for purchase, even though the final translation was only made available last week, and the book is not scheduled for release on Amazon until August 12th. How close to the "final" version of the book is the current premium release? Is it still being actively edited, and if so does it make sense to wait some weeks before purchasing it?
-
@unknownmat Well, you can download premium releases from your library repeatedly; I just did that today to get the updated Smartphone v18 w/ the bonuses.
-
@unknownmat And do add to the one above who asnwered you. You can download the updated book even years later. Bought realist and smartphone always when it was released and just downloaded the updated versions this weekend. As long as J-Novel doesn't lose the license you can download them as long as the JNC servers are up.
-
@unknownmat To address the question I think you're asking -- even if you purchase the premium ebook now, you won't be able to download it until its actual release date. (It's just a preorder.)

Ah! I didn't know this. I hadn't attempted to purchase it yet because I wanted to avoid accidentally grabbing an incomplete version.
So basically it's a complete non-issue and I'm worried over nothing. Thanks.

@ennithree Opps didn't check if it is downloadable.
