Tentai Books Discussion Thread

@Jon-Mitchell Not how I see it.
Translations open up an extra sector for the market that barely competes with their main market, and since all the original publisher has to do to make money on that sector (even if it is potentially as low as 10%, maybe even 5%) is sign a contract, Isn't that essentially just free money for them?
The only sad thing is that after going through three companies (bookstore, translation publisher, and Japanese publisher) the author's cut is probably measured in pennies...

5 RomCom coming from Tentai in their next batch.

the website was down for a while--back up now
I find it notable that Tentai says they'll start including bookmarks/trading cards and other exclusives that normally are exclusives to particular outlets in Japan with upcoming physical releases...hint hit JNC maybe can look into this? -
Are they continuing with "Welcome to the Diner of the Exiled!" and it's other volumes?
-
Yes, according to the post @Terrence linked, they are working on acquiring the license for V2, and will have more details on that next year.
-
@Jon-Mitchell The main problem here is distribution, as it'd require either shrinkwrapping of the books, so that the bonuses won't get lost, or selling books directly. Tentai do both, JNC does neither.
There's nothing impossible in bonus merch per se, though. In fact I do have a stack of various SAO/lewd Holo postcards and some fridge magnets from local LN publisher.
Tbh, I'd rather prefer JNC adding premium short stories to their print books over bonus merch that I already don't know what to do with. -
Oh, I'm already salivating at the prospect if 5 new licenses. Sorry to hear that "Works Teach" got off to a rocky start, but I'm glad that they seem to have the bus worked out now. I can't wait to read it in February.

@Jon-Mitchell Are adding extras and goodies that unusual in the US?
Like in my country it's more in trend to add extras limited to first printings of Manga like collectors cards, postcards, bookmarks, character cards and keychains etc. as a incentive to buy.
Extras for LNs are rarer but they are mostly bookmarks and character cards or in case Killing Slimes the first volume comes with the translated Rimuru recommendation wrapper. -
@Lotteliese
Yes they are not that common in USA (unless they are extras with a Kickstarter) keychains and such sold separately. -
@Lotteliese - what are the prices for the printed LNs with extras? In the US I see $14 for printed paperbacks (with no extras) and $8-10 for digital ebooks.
-
@HarmlessDave I'm not a Lotteliese, but here in Russia it's 4,5 USD for a paperback manga, 7,5$ for a hardcover novel if bought directly from the publisher's store. Bonuses (mostly postcards) are already included.
-
@HarmlessDave I recommend reading the blog. https://tentaibooks.com/en/tentai-books-end-of-the-year-update/
We want all of our physicals to be special, so, if possible and with the approval of our partners, we’ll also produce special trading cards & bookmarkers with the extra art issued from Japan, exclusive to some retailers over there, to be included in all of our physicals. These cards and bookmarkers won’t add to the price of the books, which will stay the same as it has been so far (14.99 USD).
-
@HarmlessDave The LNs that I mentioned are sold for their regular price of 12 Euro.
The most recent exception is the Yona of the Dawn LN since there are two versions. The normal paperback is 12,99 EUR and the LE is 19,99 EUR, because it comes with a lithograph, golden edges and is a big trim sized hardcover.
-
I really like how they’re doing things. It’s a different model from JNC (only a few titles with lots of focus on each one), but one that makes sense and they’ve been responsive to feedback and pretty transparent about their processes. Basically, they’re what I’d hoped Sol Press would be.

A good opportunity for expert guessers - the first correct answer on their twitter gets a free digital copy of the new license
-
While I welcome the new licenses, I'm still waiting for a release date for world teacher, which is supposed to be available mid February. So... Yeah.

Their calendar states 19th February for the digital version: https://tentaibooks.com/en/release-announcement-schedule/

@Terabyte
Yeah, I saw that. But still no purchase option available through either themselves or anyone else. I know that they had to basically translate the thing twice. Apparently the first team was a wash for some reason. But we'll see I guess. -
I'm really looking forward to World Teacher as it has been on the series I have most wanted, however the 10 month gap from vol. 1 to 2 is slightly concerning...
