Policy about posting links to Novel Updates?
-
Do we have any policy about using links to Novel Updates, specifically in license suggestion topics? I realized that my latest post was edited twice to remove a NU link by someone.

• Do not post links to fan translations, or to rips of licensed translations.
-
It's because NU has links to fan translations which is against the rules.

That's a misconception Novel Updates is not a fan translation site, you will not find a single fan translation on that website It does have links to fan translation sites but it itself is not one.
What it is is the only real LN database with information on potential licenses that we have left with the removal of LNDB, where do you think all these suggestions came from, they got information from LNDB or Novel Updates and thought that sounds interesting lets throw it in suggestions. Which incidentally is what i did when i put Ascendance of a bookworm in the licensing suggestions page.
So what do you guys want us to do recommend something with no links to descriptions or information about the title and everyone is supposed to just guess if it's something that's interesting based on the title alone.

@catstorm I don't know who you're trying to fool, but "it's not actually a fan translation site, it just hosts thousands of links to fan translations and its primary purpose is to provide convenient access to fan translations" is not a good argument. If you would prefer us to explicitly say in the rules "Don't link to NovelUpdates," we can do that.

You could use MAL.
It just looks really bad for a localization company to leave up links to content that infringes on our Japanese partners' copyrights. Or more like, you should not only link to somewhere else; put as much information into your suggestion posts as possible in the first place.

Well most of the time I use the title and sypnosis from NU, I just prefer it to MAL or LNDB (and probably better), but well, if anyone wants the link to NU now they will have to search for it themselves, Google is quite good at recommending things.

I have mixed thoughts on this and if you don't want NU linked I think you should add it to the rules.

Technically by linking NU, the rule has not been broken regardless of the intent of said rule. But at the same time I 100% agree with the intent and your reasoning.
I work in an environment where rules are absolute and not following can lead to many deaths. All of our rules (and rules in general) are written for a reason. Just because we know the intent does not mean we can do something that accomplishes that intent but technically breaks the rule, otherwise there could be grave consequences.
This is opposite in nature to following the rule but not adhering to intent, so if this is the case I think the rule should be rewritten accordingly.

Wait, we are not supposed to post LNDB links? Thought I saw them quite often here. Because of the one cover which accompanies all entries?
Oh and I noticed that LNDB is not online anymore.... Just noticed it now.
-
@saskir NovelUpdates, not LNDB. LNDB (if it's still alive) is fine.
-
I have updated the rule to now read as follows:
• Do not post links to fan translations, sites that aggregate links to fan translations (such as NovelUpdates), or direct rips of licensed translations.

Argh yeah. After I read the above comment again I noticed the removal was not meant on thi forum, more that the website is no longer.
