New Website Feedback

The calendar is still grossly out-of-date for manga chapter/volume release dates
-
So is there a way to set up the reader so it's in single page format, but only takes up the same width as what the double page layout uses (Ie, single page, but half width)?
Also there should be some way to get to the series page of a novel from the calendar page on parts that are release, right now it only does it if the part is not yet available, it's not really intuitive to need to load up the reader just to be able to click to the series page from there.
-
@erys No, the fonts have changed to match those of the new app. If you have a font in particular you miss, you can let us know which one that is in this topic: https://forums.j-novel.club/topic/3074/novel-reader-font-choices and it will be taken into consideration.

I'm able to do that by toggling the reading direction to vertical, then pressing the Narrow button (which is where the 1-page/2-page button is in horizontal mode)
Edit: incidentally, it looks like while reading direction is saved, the switch into narrow view isn't. I tried a hard refresh just to make sure...

@mlindner If you could elaborate on what this print page behavior the old reader has that you would like to see in the new reader, that would be appreciated
It's a qualitative thing. When the old reader loads up it looks all around nice and very much like printed books, it's a combination of styling, font choice, kerning, line spacing and other such things. My books app on my laptop makes light novels look similarly to how the old reader looks. The new reader looks nothing like either of them.
-
@mlindner Could you please add the following for your styling comparison:
- Part title
- Font choice on old and new site
-
@jpwong Yes, this will be possible soon
As for the calendar, we'll be improving its appearance and functionality in the future, as well as the library, to include thumbnails and more links

The web reader should use Crimson Text. Posting it here as well as that topic you linked to hasn't been updated in over a year. It's the one the Old reader used.
-
The digital release dates on multiple manga do not match dates on distributor sites for future releases. JNovel has the further out than the distributors in most cases, though some like Part 1 Volume 7 of Ascendance of a Bookworm are much earlier than the distributors dates. So it's kind of random. I have not found ANY where the dates actually match so far.

It's Altina, most recent chapter from today. I didn't know you could change fonts, they're the default fonts. Apparently that means "Crimson Text" for the old one (I had to inspect the raw computed styling with inspect element in Firefox), and the new one was selected on "Literata". Also I changed the formatting on the new reader to 110% and 1.5 line spacing, which makes it somewhat readable. The defaults of 100% and 1.3 are much worse.

The Calendar is partially broken, when viewed on Smartphone.
Using a Galaxy S20+ and browser is Firefox. -
@Marius8 Could you please elaborate what is broken, a screenshot would be ideal
-
I just went through all the font choices and there doesn't appear to be any decent serif font choice. Literata looks most decent, but it doesn't render italic text still. It just makes the text all wavy instead of italic. Looks like a different font to be frank actually.
-
Thanks for the fast responses @chocolatkey, however I'm going to be using the old reader for a while now. I'll check it again in a few weeks to see if some of the issues I mentioned previously have been fixed. If you have any questions, just ping me on the forums. (Again it would be great if we could just adapt the old reader to the new site.)
-
@mlindner I'll let you know, in the meantime the old site will be available for a while for anyone else who prefers the old reader's options/design. And if anyone would like something like a new (or old) font added, please (in a civilized manner) rally users to your cause because we can't make changes according to individual users' opinions as easily as we can for the opinion of many users, because some things, such as fonts available, will never satisfy everyone

One piece of feedback for the site. The main page (if you're logged in) should have the recent releases on a sidebar somewhere or something. Instead it just appears as a big advertisement right now as if you've just come to the site, which isn't super useful. Even better is it just showed in a sidebar all the series you're currently following and just shows the new chapters of those, basically like the old site does.
-
@mlindner The layout of the homepage will be addressed in a future update. We do plan on having a sidebar
-
The part listing for Volume 4 and Volume 1 is clipped. https://j-novel.club/series/tearmoon-empire
The "Parts available" has the icon on the left clipped and it only shows "Parts Availabl" in the text.
-
Ok everyone, go post in https://forums.j-novel.club/topic/3074/novel-reader-font-choices that you want the old font from the old reader, namely "Crimson Text". That should go a long way to making the new reader more usable.
-
@mlindner Fixed the tearmoon parts by abbreviating the descriptor, I'll think of a long-term workaround later. As for the font choice, upvoting your post is a lot better than making lots of posts
