J-Novel Club's most successful series so far?
-
Agreed, I DO have fun reading the novel but the execution in the anime adaptation was just plain bad
-
@paulnamida
Agreed. I'm honestly amazed at how such a give-me could be screwed up. It's a slice of life series for the most part. -
I can't put on my finger on the reason why the anime fails so badly. The books work (for me) as light entertainment, but the anime, despite being relatively faithful, just fails.
-
I figured Infinite was quite popular but it's no where to be found on those rankings lol. My favorite in the end is realist tho followed by grimgar and paladin in second place and third as of now is Infinite. World's strongest went down for my rankings, volume one had me hooked but no new volumes can beat volume one.
-
@sparhawk6 It finished? Wow. That's a series that would be a no-questions asked buy for me. The drama isn't bad either.

Well, this thread was originally made back in May/June so Infinite Dendrogram had not long been revealed as a new licence. I wonder whether the standings have changed at all since then?

Realist hero is the best j novel club license followed by Outbreak company and arifureta

What's the best if you absolutely hate harems? =P
-
@terrence Give Faraway Paladin a look.
-
@terrence
Why would you even read LNs then?IMHO, quality wise that would be Infinite Dendrogram, except if you're really picky and mind Rook's monster harem. -
@paul-nebeling Paladin by far. Dendrogram is alright, but Paladin has a much more mature and talented author, and honestly the story is a lot more emotionally driven. The moving on of Will’s parents in the first volume made me just about cry, and the battle with the dragon in Secundus was a ten outta ten. I’m just now getting into Realist Hero, so I can’t make an opinion for it quite yet, but Paladin is still the top for me. I love Arifureta as well, especially the first volume, but the harem tropes have been getting a bit out of hand.
-
@legitpancake At least in Arifureta the MC has actually picked a girl and is sticking with her for legitimate reasons. Much prefer the "I love multiple people" trope or the "I love one person and am friends with the rest" thing to the Love Hina "I like everyone, kinda, but don't have the balls to pick one".
Also figuring out the best sellers is easy. Look at which series are getting print copies.
As for my current personals, in order-
Realist Hero
Walking my Second Path
For my DaughterThough I'm also reading 6 other series and am considering giving Infinite a shot.
One series that I couldn't get into no matter how many times i read the first volume is Paladin. I just cant muster the willpower to read past half.
-
For me Grimgar is by far the best, we have a MC that isn't op but is extremely talented with observation skills can be a bit funny sometimes and isn't a harem (at least I don't see it as one as of now) .
-
@jampodevral gets better after he starts training XD .
-
@terrence well said , i pretty much ignore any novels without romance as one of its genre

I need romance definitely (unless it's horror / mystery, but even then I can get bored; crime scene investigation stuff with no romance is the most boring thing in the world to me). But I do prefer triangle drama. :heart_eyes_cat:
-
@hyferzftw are you sure we reading the same grimgar? MC extremely talented? I haven't read vol 5 yet, but aren't our beloved MC one of the leftovers?
-
@imilyaz You have to keep in mind that he's an unreliable narrator. He does a pretty good job as a leader, keeping his team alive (evacuation in volume 2) and making good use of their strengths, which becomes apparent first time in volume 3 when that are fighting the orcs (especially against the sorcerer).
-
I concur with Jaquobus - Haruhiro might not be that flash as an individual adventurer and has a pretty severe self-confidence problem, but as a leader he's actually pretty damn good. Compared to every other LN MC ever he seems crap because they are generally so overpowered. Sure, he's conservative and risk averse, but in his situation without overpowered team-mates (as mentioned, the leftovers) and with no second chances for screw ups that's pretty much perfect to keep them alive as long as possible. He knows their limitations and works around it. That's what being a leader is really about, getting the most out of your team, whoever they may be. He was part of a shitty hand of leftovers but he's playing that shitty hand pretty darn well.
-
Ok I realise I might've overlooked and underestimated Haru's abilities. I admit he has pretty nice observational skills, like in vol 3. And he is pretty good at keeping risks at minimal.
But I wouldn't go as far as to say he's "extremely talented".
