That would be an awesome one, and it's actually complete now.

Anyone ever tried used Machine translation on an LN (specifically the Google Translate photo mode on a cell phone)? How bad is it? I feel like I need to experiment. Playing my way through Monster Hunter XX with it, which is tedious, but doable. xC

Don't worry, I know Google isn't replicating anything close to actual translation quality and is still a mess with complex sentences. No one will lose their job to bots. =P

@terrence I tried it once, and it was recognizable as a hilarious clusterfuck (even for someone like me who doesn't speak Japanese). Though, to be fair, you could get the general gist of the story most of the time.

You know how in Japanese, the subject is often implied? In a conversation segment, Google translate tried to guess the correct pronoun to insert, but got it wrong all the time.

And speaking of dialogue, you couldn't follow who's speaking at all. In the Japanese text, it was clear because everyone was using a different "I" (ore, watashi in hiragana and watashi in kanji ), but that was of course lost in translation, and Google translate of course wouldn't add speaker tags.

And from my experience using Google Translate for languages which I actually know (English, German and French), it has the bad habit of sometimes simply omitting subordinate clauses.

I've read quite a few web novels using Google Translate, it does have all those issues you all mentioned, but having its romanization (which is what I struggle with most) below helps a lot once you get a general understanding of japanese grammar, which can certainly be learnt a lot faster than actual japanese, so I usually go google translate -> select clusterfuck translation -> check romaji -> make sense of grammar -> translate word by word -> put it together into a coherent phrasing.

It is extremely time consuming... but you can get about 90% of it (checked by comparing what I got with the proper translation that gets released later on). It's not perfect, but it gets its job done of queching your thirst.

I use Google Translate to "read" Rokujouma Hercules chapter. Even though it is all over the place by already knowing the character personality and general way of thinking plus series style I manage to make sense most of it. At least enough to gasp the full picture of what being shown.

I don't know if this would work but I don't know many Light Novels that could work(I only read Legal Translations) but Could Kino's Journey work for #5? IDK I just want to read it.

I used google translate for some Japanese game servers and it wasn't that bad, but I'm guessing it would butcher LNs.

I will guess Nigotta Hitomi no Lilianne for #5. When I read female protagonist and fairy it came to mind though its probably wrong since it has reincarnation.

Now this is something I have never heard.

Only the 4th series left that I'm interest now. Don't really interest in Nasuverse to be honest.

I always get them mixed up, but:

Twelfth (k?)Night - A shipwrecked woman dresses up as a male courier serving a Lord.

As You Like It(?) - I'm trying to remember the specifics of the other one, and if it's this play title or another. Been a bit, but I remember the main character was a wrestler, his love interest ends up dressing up as a man (Ganymede). These two end up play acting a date while the female character is dressed as a man.

                                    Edit: Eeyup.

Rosalind, because she is "more than common tall", dresses up as a boy, Ganymede, a well-known image to the audience. She plays on her ambiguous charm to seduce Orlando, but also (involuntarily) the shepherdess Phoebe. Thus behind the conventions of Elizabethan theater in its original setting, the young boy playing the girl Rosalind dresses up as a boy and is then courted by another boy playing Phoebe.

Shakespeare liked to play on the awkwardness of having young male actors portraying women cross dressing as men who then would pretend to be a woman in that simulation setting. It's like an Xzibit meme (we put a male actor in a female role so he can pretend to be a woman while pretending to be a man pretending to be a woman). It's one of the times where you have to think "what does he want us to see here? A man, a woman, the actor himself? How do we make sense of this?". Imagine how tough that would be for the actor, to have like 3 or 4 levels of pretending, and to make it believable.

In the modern day, we have the next level work of art with consciousness hopping in Kokoro Connect. =P

I had high hopes Zero Escape: Zero Time Dilemma would try something like that in its plot, but alas, not so much. Would have been really interesting to have a character (villain or hero) pretending to be someone they aren't while controlling their body.

Though I may have only read one of Shakespeare's plays, I fell in love with his writing(merchant of Venice). Though I do need someone helping me understand the language from time to time so I can enjoy it even more

Fun fact: there is a woman in merchant of Venice called Portia. Though she only play's it for a short period, she cross dresses as a male lawyer(or the layer's assistant can't remember) to save... Well the merchant of Venice. But you probably knew that :p

So with the new newsletter we have the additional hint that one series is suited for Halloween. I hope that means horror/mystery, but maybe Sam and Aimee are just trolling and its about someone getting reincarnated as a pumpkin.

Guessing it's the not a Nasuverse one. Isn't one of the guesses something dark (character design wise)?

The Garden of Sinners, known in Japan as Boundary of Emptiness and sometimes referred as Rakkyo, is a Japanese light novel series,

^but I think this is a part of the Nasuverse, so idk.

Yeah, Garden of Sinners is part of the Nasuverse. I'm so sure sure it's DDD I can almost taste it.
