@grobinson2k1 I admit all I can think of every time I see him is the whole "WHAT WAS UP WITH THIS RIO/N THING? WHAT WAS THE WRITER THINKING?!"
(caps very intentional, it drives me crazy)

In Japanese, there is only one glide consonant. For native Japanese speakers, it’s difficult to distinguish the English L/R sounds. For native English speakers, learning to combine the two glides into one is also difficult. (I learned how to do it, and it still feels odd, even though I studied Japanese in the early ’90s.)
Thus, in Black Summoner, we have Leo/Rio the guildmaster. There’s also a character named Rion whose alternate transliteration I don’t remember atm. In Utawarerumono (Mask of Truth), running right now, there is Rurutie/Lulutie/combo of the two spellings.
So try not to take the L/R inconsistencies too much to heart. The JP ==> EN translator is doing the best s/he can trying to split one phoneme in Japanese into two in English.
-
@NekoInu the pronunciation is still the same, which is my point
Edit: I dunno if the names were in Kanji instead of Kana in the original (which would have mooted the problem in the LNs), but it is also a bit of a translation fail, because splitting the R/L in this case would have both made the names more clear and read better in English (as Leo is a name that exists, and I've never heard Rio as a name except that Duran Duran song)
-
As we have talked enough about Rio.... I still wonder if we will see Rion. I am just wondering about this as we see her in the opening but not in the ending. Even Ange is included there.

My problem is not with the R/L problematic. More that someone doesn't use the established translation of the name.

All you had to do was Google "rio name" to find out that it is in fact a name...
-
I love your avatar by the way.
That said, a lot of names exist. I took your suggestion and looked it up;
Leo was #45 boys name in 2021.
Rio was #1402 for boys and #3162 for girls (it's a gender neutral name) in 2021.
Seems like a simple fix, especially since there was the luxury of knowing Rion was coming up.
Alternatively, it's just a random member doing 2 posts about a pet peeve, and will soon be forgotten again like the Rio character himself.
-
@Windsagio As someone who doesn't have a common "traditional"/western American/Christian name, it frankly rubs me the wrong way when people complain "I've never heard of anyone with that name." Your personal experience should not have any bearing on why someone you've probably never met decided to use this specific spelling; it simply could have come down to "the subtitler knows people named 'Rio' in their life and no one named 'Leo,' therefore they chose that spelling."
-
@myskaros That's more than fair, but we all have our own taste y'know?
I'll leave it at that though, arguing with staff and mods is a bad look.

This is my biggest problem with using Leo, they had at least 8+ volumes of fully translated LNs, and another 5+ Manga volumes to use and decided they knew better than established material.
-
Also, Leo doesn't even work with the revealed "full name" unless they go with
which... no. Why. Why would you do that. Also I did a quick google and... uh... Leon appears to be a boy's name. Which is probably how they'd anglicize Rion's name if they're giving Rio the name "Leo".
-
@TheGrimLich If they shift Rion because of Leo, I can see them using Leone or Leona. Granted, if they do that, my friend will probably laugh at me for bitching about the translation again.

Hmmm, never heard Leo as a female name (although it seems to give some who are named like this). Which would make the choosing of this name a moot point. Besides I don't think a japanese female would be called Leo. Now if Rion would be English (Leonora) or German (Leonore/Leonie) then it would be another point.
But my standpoint stands. Why did the translator team of the anime not use the established name.

Because they don't have to. [Thems the facts.]
They know better. [Um, this happens. As an attitude, at least. On occasion it's even correct.]
What established name? [This last is semi-serious; consider that maybe, just maybe, the folks producing the subs haven't read the source materials in translation.]The HonZuki Fandom feels your pain. [We do. The name of the f-ing main character?!]
-
@saskir I'm not saying that they'll call her Leo. I'm saying that because she changed her name to Rion because of how close it was to Rio (who the translation/subtitle team of the anime calls Leo), I was speculating what they might end up calling her if they change her name.
@Geezer-Weasalopes Those are valid points. As for the HonZuki Fandom, my thoughts go out to you. That would drive me beyond nuts and possibly kill the anime for me.

While it torqued us off, the anime is just too well done for bad subs to drive us away.
But we remember. -

To be absolutely fair to Crunchyroll's sub team and their poor choice of naming localization, Bookworm S1 premiered at the same time as Shield Hero S1. Which... while nobody smart would ever confuse those two characters, anime isn't just watched by smart people.

I was only musing what they do about this part. Either they can be lucky and it is even in the anime or they really need to change her name first to Leo for this joke to work (or they make a footnote, which I never saw in official translations, only in fansubs) how close both name are and that it could be the same.

The flashbacks in this episode hit all the harder after the newest part of the LN. Poor Victor, I still wish he had taken Kelvin up on his offer.
-
@Kotenmaru Not necessarily, in some ways it could be even better that he didn't take Kelvin's offer.
-
Wow, they actually used normal animation for the Heroes fight and it looks so much cleaner than the cgi they used for the Gerard and Viktor fights.
