After Pre-pub closes
-
After the Pre-publication is closed, will we get a copy of the final draft or is that bought seperately?
-
@Bamgm14
If you have purchased it, yes.
If you just read it as a perk of being a JNC member, no. -
If by 'final draft' you mean 'full ebook' then the situation is as @Weasalopes describes it.
You don't get all ebooks free just for being a member, you get pre-pubs free until shortly after ebook publication. Members get discounts on credits used to buy premium ebooks and premium members get more discounts and a book's worth of free credits per month. If you buy a book from JNC however you do get prepub access to that book but not to the relevant prepub discussion forum/thread.
There is no such thing as a final draft on JNC. They release the pre-pub parts one at a time and you maintain access to them until around 4-5 weeks after the ebook is out (and you get permanent prepub part access if you buy the premium ebook from JNC). These parts also become available again from time to time as part of the monthly catch-ups.
The ebook is not a draft, it is the full book with additional editing and tweaks and includes any colour illustrations (whereas the prepub parts only have the greyscale illustrations). The premium ebook can also include bonuses like extra stories (which were often retailer-specific or in-store exclusives in Japan) and textless illustrations.
They update the ebook from time to time and will probably do a last check before sending it to the printers for those books with a physical release.
See https://j-novel.club/howitworks and https://j-novel.club/faq for details.

@Shiny I was thinking of buying the Prepub and was wondering if I would get the final draft as well. I understand the membership, while a neat perk, doesn't give u access to the final draft unless you preorder. Thanks for verifying tho
-
@Bamgm14 From my phone people don't buy the pre-pub they redeem a credit for the premium epub edition of the book which gives them access to the pre-pubs when they are released and the premium ebook when it is released.
-
@Shiny I am sorry, I don't follow?

Okay... Lets sort this out.
If you buy the Ebook though JNC... The Prepubs remain unlocked for the specific volume you bought as long as you are logged in.
They generally aren't updated to a "final draft" state. There are apparently plans to change this in the future, but it is tied up in the many, many back-end upgrades that are still in progress.
Currently, the only way to access them is through the series page.If you buy the Ebook though JNC... You get the Premium Ebook, which does benefit from the final polishing pass before publishing. Also, it generally comes with at least textless color illustrations as a bonus, though a few series also have bonus short stories.
Finally, they have no DRM, so you can plug them in to whatever reader you want and expect them to work. -

I assume this is a mistype? -
@Bamgm14 J-Novel Club does sell ebooks directly through the main site, anyone can purchase them (you just need a credit card).
You can go to any series page, select a volume, purchase the required number of coins (the books on the site are purchased via coins, and coins are purchased via credit card, 1 coin = 1 US Cent).
After you purchase/pre-order your ebook, when it releases, you can download that finalized ebook, and read it on any device of your choosing.

I assume this is a mistype?No. Buying through any other store will only get you the regular Ebook, with no add-ons.
I just forgot to say that part. -
@Rahul-Balaggan That I understood, but I was mostly curious about if I preorder a book, am I entitled to the Pre-pub of the book or not?
-
@piisfun Understood, thanks

Yes, if you preorder a book directly on our website, you get access to the prepub parts even if you don't have a subscription!
-
@Bamgm14 I think the part everyone is missing each other is this - the prepub, readable on the website, comes with the jnc subscription and is available while it's being written and for like a month after, no ebook purchase necessary. It's not super polished and edited, and you don't get the epub unless you buy it.

JNC gets a license to translate a given work.
They post pre-publication sections on the JNC web site [You Are Here grin] as they produce the translation; they post it as it is produced.
Once they have completed the translation [and thus the posting of pre-publication sections], they release two eBook versions.
There is a standard release which can be obtained from the Usual Suspects [Availability may vary due to various retailers being inconsistent concerning who their market is.]
There is a Premium Edition available only from the JNC web site which contains a variety of 'extras'; this varies from volume to volume, with the one constant being unlimited DRM-free downloads [which are identified as to who purchased the volume on the copyright page.]Access to the pre-publication sections is a temporary benefit of JNC membership; it gets cut off a certain amount of time after the finished book is published.
Access to the pre-publication sections is permanent if you purchase the eBook directly from JNC; eBooks purchased through other retailers do not count, not does ownership of a print copy for those titles which eventually do receive a print edition.You no longer have to be a dues paying member of JNC to purchase the Premium Edition; you do have to have an account with JNC; registering for an account is free.
All rights associated with ownership of the Premium Edition are yours once the transaction is completed, whether you are a member or not; thus, purchasing when the pre-pub starts will give you access to the pre-pub as it posts even if not a member.Anyone saying "I'm not purchasing, I'm redeeming coins" is quibbling.
You paid money for those; it's a purchase. -

Just in case all of the above wasn't clear, I'll word it a little differently:
You can't buy the prepub at all.
What you buy directly from JNC is the Premium ebook (in DRM-free ePub format), which is the final version and often includes bonuses like textless illustrations or some of the bonus stories that the Japanese publisher provided to bookstores as a pre-order or first-day bonus.
In addition to the premium ebook, you also get the right to read the prepub version in a browser or app. That's just an extra feature, what you are buying is the ebook. If you buy a title directly from JNC before release that is a pre-publication-purchase of the ebook not the prepub.
