English title: The Mentor in a Frontier City
Japanese title: 辺境都市の育成者 (Henkyō Toshi no Ikuseisha)

      Cover

Author: Riku Nanano (Private Tutor to the Duke’s Daughter)
      Illustrator: Fukukitsune

Publisher: Fujimi Fantasia Bunko (Fujimi Shobo)
      Books released: 6 volumes (completed)
      Manga adaptation?: Yes

      Bookwalker

      Synopsis (from @AQuin1904's blog)

Thirteen-year-old Rebecca Alvern is desperate to escape an arranged marriage, but her father, a power-hungry earl, hasn’t seen her as anything but a political tool since the day he learned she hasn’t inherited his aptitude for lightning magic, and none of her siblings are willing to take her side. So with nowhere left to turn in her home kingdom of Rennant, she runs away from home.

Two years later, Rebecca is an up-and-coming adventurer on the fringes of the neighboring Lothringen Empire. But while she may have carved out a niche for herself, she can’t relax just yet—who knows when her family will come to drag her home, kicking and screaming? Rebecca is making a name for herself as a swordswoman, but she’s still no match for her father in a fight. Lately, she seems to have hit a wall. And to make matters worse, a disgraced nobleman turned unscrupulous adventurer has her in his sights. Frustration, paranoia, and mistrust have pushed her almost to the breaking point when a minor errand introduces her to Haru—an enigmatic man living in a ruined church. The self-proclaimed “mentor” is clearly more than the reclusive young scholar he appears to be, and his inexplicable talents could show her the way out of her dilemma—if she can bring herself to accept his help.

Why do I want this series?

This series comes from the author of Private Tutor to the Duke’s Daughter. The translator in fact wrote a very nice review of the series. Private Tutor happens to be one of my favourite series here in JNC, so I'd happy to get some of the author's other works licensed into English as well!

The series is completed at 6 volumes, although with a somewhat rushed ending from what I can tell from comments.

      Quof got a break.
WHAT'S THE STORY WITH THAT FREAKING BLACK DRAGON?!

I've enjoyed Private Tutor to the Duke's Daughter, despite its increasingly inaccurate title, and wouldn't mind seeing what the author's other works are like.

It was mentioned in Private Tutor's Volume 9 Afterword that this is a prequel to the series and is set in the same world.

          Please license this next!

Sorry for necro'ing an older topic, but is this still a suggestion? If not, would like it to be considered. We're currently on volume 14 of Private Tutor, so it just makes sense to try and include an established prequel series if it exists (especially considering it's relatively short and finished).

Suggestions remain active until someone licenses the work.
Bumping suggestions is fair game, so folks who hadn't seen the suggestion do so.

Her outfit is a bit … brief?

At first glance, I thought that she might be heavily pregnant, with the shadowing on the left side of her, the dark spot of her top just below her chest, and the micro-mini skirt possibly being pushed down by a protruding belly seemingly giving more depth to her tummy.

Then I just wondered if she was wearing a Japanese shampoo hat around her waist, instead of a skirt.

The cover art is so, so, so much better than I could ever hope to draw, but I don’t like her attire. Given the rest of her outfit, does she really need to be wearing armor over her chest, or does she just need that much support?

I’m quite interested in the story, given how I’ve stuck with and enjoyed Private Tutor so far, but that cover… :p

@Geezer-Weasalopes Thank you for the info, I appreciate it! I was honestly thinking about suggesting paying for the licensing myself or crowdfunding it, until I looked into just how much it cost to license light novels on average. Now I'm surprised that JNC licenses as much as it does, honestly. All the estimates I've read are around like 15,000$+.

@Ingraman Yeah, I didn't notice until you pointed out, but she does look like she's pregnant in the cover page. Still think that the artist is a fantastic artist, but think they drew her with her trying to like "puff her front out" or something and that ended up making her look pregnant. If you've read the light novels, though, it's obvious that she (probably) has children, since her last name is the same last name as the hero's in private tutor. Would love to see how things were during that time, so it kills me that I can't read Japanese and just purchase the original novels lol.

That's interesting. You would think they would license it in that case.

Basically, 'Heavenly Swords' is a WHAT-IF to an event taking place in 'Frontier City' which itself is a prequel to 'Private Tutor'.
Frontier City -> TS -> Private Tutor,
                        is how it goes.
