What Other Light Novels Are You Reading?

Wow at Yen with those delays. =[
I ended up renting Baccano V5. Read that after Goblin Slayer V2. I'm so close to finished with White Album 2 Intro Chapter visual novel as well!

I’ve gotta say Reborn as a Vending Machine is pretty fucking dope.
Reading the afterward makes sense as to why it’s so light and frothy

As for other LNs I recently read Accel World vol. 3 and am now a few pages from finishing 4. I dropped this almost two years back I think but it’s actually become really good.
Also starting JNovel Rokujouma 8 and the first Ao Oni. I’m on a quest to finish all the LNs I’ve bought. #probablywonteverhappen

I farted around all today on the internet instead of reading my novels like I planned... xC
I have read a bit of Vending, though I haven't been paying it the attention it deserves (fell asleep to it last night, and the text to speech literally read the entire book to my unconscious mind). I couldn't tell you what the fried dish they ate out of the thing was, what the Pringles like dish was, which drinks he swapped out for what, or the bald dude and the crew cut dudes' names. Probably should enter those on the character names thread.

Accel World is the series I am most excited to read whenever a new book releases in English. Overlord and Kumoko are close behind. Book 5 is amazing, only book I've deliberately set down to end up on a 2-hour Google search marathon, it was great.

I accidentally bought a manga from yenpress thinking it was a LN :(. Now I’m paranoid of buying anything from them. This is the second time this happens to me. Last time it happened with spice & wolf but that one was mainly my fault. It actually said (Manga) and I didn’t see it clearly cuz I was buying volume 6-8 all at once, ended up buying volume 7 manga and the rest LNs. I don’t buy their stuff often I guess I’m not use to their website and how to check if it’s a LN or not. Sometimes it says “(light novel or manga)” and sometimes it doesn’t say anything.

@myskaros I saw the anime, so my question is should I start over from volume one or can I start at a later volume. I personally don’t mind missing out minor details but I have been thinking of purchasing the LNs for it.

I don't think you'll really miss anything if you just start on book 5, but it's been a really long time since I both read books 1-4 and watched the anime, so I might be neglecting something.

Accel World is in that Dropped/Hiatus mode for me when it comes to reading it. It has such an interesting premice but that's just it, an interesting premice. Overall it is better than SAO and I think the relationship between Haru and Kuroyukihime is one of the best things about the series. If I were to put my feelings about Accel World into words It would be "it is a great story written very poorly" if that makes any sense. One of the reasons why Danmachi is so great is because it has a flow, a rhythm to it that is just so smooth. I like Short bite-sized chapters much more than really long chapters but I feel if a story can get me to read 80 pages, nearly 1/4 of the book, without me even noticing, that is a very well written book. Danmachi has some really long LN but they do not feel long at all, this just shows how great the writing Danmachi has. Reading Accel World makes me feel all that time I could be doing something else like reading Danmachi or Re: Zero since I am only in the middle of Vol 3 and I don't feel like I am wasting my time reading that (or as much as I do with Accel World). I do not know if my standard is just too high or if I finally became a pretentious A-Hole.

@hyferzftw I say start with Volume 1. This is my answer to any series you may have watched the anime too. An adaption is not the original Work and will never be; Game of Thrones is very different from A Song of Ice and Fire, the books the show are based off. An adaption may and probably will miss little important things that may be important foreshadowing.

@hyferzftw It has been a while since I read the first volumes. I find the first volume OK, but volumes 2-4 were a bit boring for me. The anime covered the first four volumes plus a bit of the tenth.
That being said, things are great from volume 5 and forward. I'm still at volume 9 though, I was following the fan-translations and now want to start a re-read with the official translations.
It's a relatively slow introspective series so it takes its time to develop its characters and it works very well IMO.
Also, Kuroyukihime-sensei FTW!

I have heard that Accel World is much better written than SAO - especially the early volumes. Accurate statement or just one person's opinion?
-
@paul-nebeling It's his later work, so it's both a natural outcome and seems to be the consensus as well (to me, it definitely has a much more laser-focus on an overarching plot and supports that plot really well, sometimes to its own detriment with the number of cliffhanger ends and "the immediate story will be continued next book!"s).
You could almost argue that he course-corrected too hard, going from Kirito "I'm so perfect my creator had to retcon weaknesses for me and that only lasted for one arc" to Accel World "the entire world is predicated on character flaws." Either way, I definitely enjoy reading AW a lot, whereas I can't even get myself to touch SAO past the first book.

There's another "light novel" (more like web novel with pictures) challenger out there now, but I don't really know what to do with this. Anyone know anything about them?

Currently reading "So I'm a Spider, So What?" and it's a good read. I'll probably buy the 2nd volume too.
-
I just got the Toradora LN, though I haven’t started it yet.

Did you watch the anime? I feel like this would be fun to go through completely blind, no previous experience with the other media / print releases.
-
@terrence Yea I've seen it. One of these days I'd like to rewatch the show, maybe with the English dub. I doubt I'll buy all the volumes though. I mainly bought this first book to support SS.

I hope Toradora turns out better than Monster Girl Doctor, which I did not hear very good things about :o Conversely, I think the Average Abilities e-book did much better, so hoping it's an upward trend.
