Love Is in the Air for February's Catchups!
-
It's that time of month again, where members get to sample a new set of series for their catchup! We're confident you'll agree that every series was meticulously handpicked for its relevance to February, that is: Love <3
What better way to start off the selection than with A Lily Blooms in Another World? Miyako finds herself reborn in her favorite otome game, and wants nothing more than to romance her favorite character: the villainess Fuuka. However, Fuuka can't get over her former fiancé and will only go with Miyako if she loses a little bet. Can Miyako win her gamble all while nagivating a world of nobility and magic?
Sometimes, you only realize what you really love once its gone. And the lowly adventurer Rentt finds out he really loves being human when a surprise encounter with a strange dragon turns him into a skeleton! Thankfully, he discovers that there is a way for him to work his way back to humanity, and even become a stronger adventurer in the process! Follow along in Rentt's journey in The Unwanted Undead Adventurer, which has an anime airing now!
Sometimes, you love something that no one else loves. Andou Jurai and his female friends have obtained supernatural powers, something he's only ever dreamed of! But... there are no world-ending prophecies to face or maniacal villains to defeat, and his friends seem content to continue their mundane high school lives. Will Andou ever get the excitement he seeks? Or will he find out before then that his friends might just love something, or someone, else in their social orbit? Find out in When Supernatural Battles Became Commonplace!
Finally, make sure you have full control over your love, lest it be used to control you! Utena loves magical girls, so she's thrilled when a mascot creature shows up and offers her powers. However... this costume is a lot skimpier than she was expecting, and she's actually on the evil side? And she can't quit because the mascot got blackmail material on her while her head was in the clouds...? Well, at least she can continue Gushing over Magical Girls! Check out the anime airing now!
No matter what kind of love is in the air, members can get a taste this month's catchups!

Gushing is a great series for those of you who like plot with their “plot” so to speak
For those anime-only out there, the manga is slightly less hornyLike most ecchi series it takes a bit for the narrative to kick into full gear, but once it does it is chef kiss

I bought and read volume 1 of Gushing Over Magical Girls and got turned off by the lack of sexual consent but other than that the story was good. Then I kept reading the forums and people were 'gushing' over it and piquing my interest so much so that when it was on sale on Bookwalker just the other day, I bought a few more volumes to try. Now it is available for free on JNC. I guess this is a sign. I will read the whole series this month.
I watched When Supernatural Battles Became Commonplace back when the anime was just released and thought it was mediocre. I sampled the first volume and my opinion was not changed but since it is free, I might try it. The concept is one that I like after all- normal people getting superpowers and living mundane lives despite it.
I've had a sample of A Lily Blooms in Another World for the longest while on my Kindle. I guess I should take this chance to read it.
I'm not sure about The Unwanted Undead Adventurer. Is it grimdark? I don't see any tags that would make it seem like it would be a light-hearted adventure story.

It is not grimdark at all, despite the MC dying in the first part of volume 1. Rentt is a surprisingly competent but very weak adventurer, then he dies and things change for better and worse.
The good: interesting and likeable characters, interesting story, fun and funny at times though not a comedy. Growth and progress that feels more earned than in many "zero to hero" light novels.
The bad: Rentt loves to ramble in his conversations and especially his inner monologue. I've compared him to Mojo Jojo on more than one occasion. He will begin to ramble about one thing, then take off on a tangent and ramble about that. Unless you enjoy ramble-ception you'll need to learn to skim past pointless paragraphs now and then.
As of episode 4 the anime is doing a good job adapting the material. It leaves out some good moments, but also throws away pages of useless babbling by Rentt.

I find the anime superior to the manga in every way I can think of, but it's just my opinion. Thank you for telling us about it, so that we can compare and choose. I had dropped the manga and may or may watch one day all anime episodes for the much thicker plot presented in color and motion.

I had missed adding it to my "will possibly watch if could find a couple extra hours a day" list. Thank you for mentioning it here. I quite liked the first volume of the novel and will surely continue reading it.

Looks like a quiet month for me, I'm already up to date with unwanted undead, and the rest don't seem to tick any boxes for me, maybe supernatural battles perhaps...
On that note, highly recommend Unwanted Undead, it's a good fantasy story, the kind you see in Isekai without being Isekai (uh, kinda, Rentt does die and is brought back to "life" but it's still in his original world that's not ours) he's a "Weak" adventurer (being bronze class, second lowest) but that still puts him above most of your citizens.
It's a slow-burn story focused on one character and their desire to realise their dream (become stronger) there is no world-spanning evil to be conquered here, nor is there a world-ending threat on the horizon. It's an honest, simple adventure for Rentt.

I would like someone to add the February Catchups blog. It's strange that it's February 5 and it's still not there.

Sorry do you mean this?
https://j-novel.club/blog/love-is-in-the-air-in-februarys-catchups
Or something else?
Edit: I see it isn't listed under the "Blog" page

@Rahul-Balaggan yes, so are you add to blog list?
-
It looks the February catchups will last until March 4. Not to anyone's surprise if they were j-novel members for a while. Please prove me wrong!

This to me is a highly attractive, unique quality. The way Rentt's thoughts flow, branch off, circle around, simmer and inform his attitude and actions is the closest reflection in literature I can recall (and I've been an avid reader for 5 decades) to what happens in my own head. Even if personality wise there are few parallels, to me it is most delightful to look from the side at someone looking from the side at themselves how they look from the side at what they're thinking.
I have not missed a word from that novel! (Except for the few longish fights, that has never been attractive to me and I skim/skip over any fight sequence longer than 1-2 paragraphs in anything I read - including those in works I love)
