What's The Two Light Novel Series You'd Like to See Licensed in 2021?

Picking older, rescue titles is normally a recipe for disappointment but the fact that Slayers, Orphan, FMP, and Crest/Banner of the Stars are all things I can read right now gives me hope. So, I'll take this plunge..
Gosick - This has topped my LN wish list since seeing the anime long ago, well before there was a J-Novel and any kind of LN license that wasn't for a major tile was still considered to be kind of rare.
Oh man, I have volume 1 of that! I've been dying to read volume 2, but it's hella expensive due to the unfortunate situation with its pub... You reminded me of the series and I'd totally love to see Gosick be rescued and released again! For that matter, Ballad of a Shinigami would be pretty sweet to see continued, too... 7S mystifyingly dropped that after volume 2.

@lighthawk96 I thought I read a post in one of the forum topics here than KnT was something that Japanese publisher considered a premium title or something and wanted more to license it out which is why no one's picked it up.
@Liber-Monstrorum Isekai Yakkyoku is probably my third or fourth pic assuming the LN is at least as good as the manga. It's probably my second choice if you exclude AlphaPolis titles though.
-
Sevens and Isekai Tensei Soudouki! :)
-
@jpwong You know, normally the light novel version is always better than the manga.xD
-
@lucascba
Those both seem interesting. I would definitely give them a read if they got published. -
@Liber-Monstrorum Yes I'm aware, but there's at least a few adaptations where people feel the manga ended up being the superior format, probably because the author got too carried away describing every little detail.
-
@jpwong Do you have some examples? Because I never ever before deemed a manga superior over the novel, even if the art style was fantastic.
For example, the manga adaption of the chinese novel Legend of the Sun Knight was drawn in a very beautiful art style and introduced me to the novel. In the end I liked the novel much more, because of the well written story and the many details which were not included in the manga adaption.
Same with another story from the same author 1/2 Prince. I've read the manga adaption first, but the novel was way better in hindsight. -
@Liber-Monstrorum
Plants tongue firmly in cheek
Does A Certain Scientific Railgun (manga) being better than A Certain Magical Index (novel) count?
😁
-
I guess I'll mention both Akashic Records and OreShura. Both being long, and with a relatively old anime doesn't help though.
-
@Liber-Monstrorum I'll have to see if I can find it in the giant list of manga I'm following, but I think it's one of those ones where the manga wasn't just a faithful adaptation to the LN and did some of it's own things, so it wasn't quite the normal standard of the manga just regurgitating what the LN was doing.
-
@Crimson-Wise
Akashic records keeps popping up, so I can see a lot of people want it.Ore Shura seems interesting enough. I'd definitely give it a look.

Maria-sama ga Miteru (Maria Watches Over Us) It is this iconic series that basically revitalized a genre and even years after being made and the anime what had 4 seasons plus a live action movie is still reference in various media showing up in other stories and anime. Thinks like the Light Novels being shown on book shelfs in anime like Eromanga sensei to name one or parodies of it being used in series like Flip Flappers and I Favor the Villainous. The fact it has remained untouched for so long is just shocking. Even more so with how popular yuri genres are growing in recent years. Where you could even say some characters in them are based off ones in Maria.
Sasami-san@Ganbaranai not much to say other than a interesting story which als has a anime and I would like to read it.

@heimdal7
I'm familiar with the anime, so I don't see why it isn't possible. -

Has Maria not 39 Volumes? Atleast in my calibre library I have this amount.
Oh yeah the more I think about it the more title I want as an english release. Although the other 2 I mentioned would also be day 1 buys I would like to add some even more unlikely candidates.
First of all Kara no Kyoukai (Garden of Sinners). Even though there is a polish release (and I believe also a brazilian) I don't see it as a likely licensing chance. I assume many translators have too much respect for the Nasuverse language.
And as I once stated in the licensing topics. "Irresponisble Captain Tylor". But I assume it has too many volumes and I don't really know the licensing situation for this as the last time I read something about it there is already a western license holder.
-
@Lotteliese @saskir
I don't think volume count matters so long as the publisher thinks they can get a good return on the series. It definitely weighs in but I don't think it's a concrete determining factor. "Smartphone" is at 21 volumes and counting too so, it is all about the demand for the series, or so I've heard many, many times. -
I feel like Maria would be too risky. Based on its length, I'd probably only read the prepubs.
Girl's Kingdom at face value seems somewhat similar in a smaller form, so I'd be curious to see how that sells.
-
@Terrence Maria would definitely have a fan base who would buy it. The series has a lot of weight behind it with its history and and iconic status the anime had both in Japan and to a lesser degree in the west for people who are into that kind of genre. Also there is just so much good stuff in it that got left out of the anime for one reason or another. Also the fact the anime even got relixensed by a different publisher when the old one expired so they felt it had enough backing to be worth it.
-
@lilitu93 I would also be so excited for Saiunkoku Monogatari to be licensed. I think it should be considered for the heart catalogue.
-
What I want to see for LN licensing in 2021 would someone managing to bring works over by Shueisha, Shogakukan and Hakusensha over by publishers that aren't just Yen or VIZ. In case for VIZ maybe not only just spinoff novels of absolute bestseller shounen Manga. Also please more of Kodansha and Ichijinsha.
Since Maria is a work under Shueisha (Cobalt Bunko), JNC would need them first as business partner to have maybe a much better chance of getting it.
Seven Seas might be a possibility as well but I don't see them to keep releasing Maria if it doesn't well enough just like with Boogiepop and Record of Lodoss War.
