Maria-sama ga Miteru (Maria Watches Over Us, マリア様がみてる) by Konno Oyuki
      Volumes: 37 (complete)
Genre: Drama, School Life, Slice of Life, Yuri, Class S

      Maria-sama ga Miteru cover

“Maria-sama ga Miteru’s story revolves around the students of the Lillian Catholic school for girls, and can be considered character-driven, focusing on interactions between the characters . At Lillian Girls’ School, there is a tradition known as the sœur system (sœur being French for “sister” ) , in which a second, or third-year student, the grande sœur (“big sister” ) , will give her rosary to a junior student, the petite sœur (“little sister” ) , and promise to look after them and guide them.

When the story begins, Yumi Fukuzawa, a new first-year student admitted to Lillian, is praying in front of the Virgin Mary statue near the school entrance when she is suddenly approached by a cold second-year student named Sachiko Ogasawara who straightens Yumi’s uniform ribbon. This seemingly simple act of kindness stays with Yumi”.

It has been adapted into a anime with 4 seasons, a manga and even a live action film.

Publisher is Shueisha (Margaret Comics). Not saying it's unlikely, but JNC doesn't license many Shueisha titles, let alone old shoujo. But what the hell, boosting your idea anyway.

@Torka Shueisha Cobalt Bunko. Margaret Comics published manga adaptation that is only 9 volumes long (LN is 37 + 10 side story volumes). Not that it makes much of a difference since JNC has no novels licensed from them so far.

I remember when the anime came out, and enjoyed it.

Had no idea they had 37 volumes worth of content though.

Logic is out, Unreasonableness is in!

Ah been meaning to do one these for a long time. Glad to see someone finally did.

The series has such a strong hold in the culture that even years later it still still shows up referenced in recent media. From something as simple as the novels showing up on a bookshelf in a anime to parodies of it used in other series like

              spoiler

              and

              spoiler

Just to name a couple. Others have copied the frame work and so many others yuri series have parroted certain iconic scenes from it.

The series has had a lasting impact that won't soon be forgotten and a well established fanbase. It is really surprising it has never been licensed considering all this. Not to mention a somewhat similar series Strawberry Panic novels were licensed more than a decade ago.

J-Novel had even licensed Girls Kingdom that falls in the similar vein though no where near the popularity.

The anime was even recently remastered and released on blurays what can also be viewed on Hidive.

Just to add it also had drama cds made.

Funny there were more people saying they wanted to see it licensed in other series request then its own. I wonder if people don't recognize it without the english name Maria Watches Over Us.

I really do hope j novel licenses this. with as many volumes it has any other publisher would take decades.

Seeing the recent license of another old series in Earl and Fairy really gives me hope for Maria that still has a good following. It even still shows up in current media like anime and other LN whether just the books on a shelf or parodies of it.

Both series have roughly the same amount of volumes.

@heimdal7 As mentioned on the announcement stream, if Earl and Fairy does well, this series and others like it could indeed be on the table.

I've read the novel fantranslation and own the anime. This is one of my favorite stories ever!

It's a classic that helped pave the way for more yuri content in anime and mangas.

Earl and Fairy has a anime that I never heard of and barely got any views on crunchy roll. It's sad that this novel that seems to be a generic harem novel. Will control whether a famous classic that has been so influential in anime will be officially translated.

Got to admit it does say something about Maria considering what is a 4 season anime as soon the rights expired was picked practically right back up and remastered for a bluray rerelease just a couple years ago.

I said before how Maria-sama is still regularly referenced even today. Yuri is My Job! anime that just started airing today is a good example as it 100% parodies Maria-sama.

Also I'm in Love with the Villainess what is getting a anime later this year has a bit in it what is a Maria-sama parody.

Is there still any chance of Maria-sama getting licensed? I know earl and Fairy apparently has not been selling good but it honestly probably wasn't the best choice of a test series. It hasn't aged well at all and aspects of it really conflict with a lot of people mind set as to what is socially acceptable. It also has no real presence in communities or ever comes up in convo.

Maria on the other hand is still actively praised and comes up in modern media either parodied in other series or directly referenced. Plus it has the yuri aspect what is very popular right now.

Seriously why has no one ever licensed a series that had this much impact to still be relevant decades later.

Sam said that old stuff doesn’t sell well

So it might be that they just focus their energy on acquiring the stuff that they think will sell the best

As a business, they have to. Otherwise, they will no longer be a business and we will lose a great thing.

@Lily-Garden I don't know all the old stuff that was licensed but Earl and Fairy that was brought up seemed like a bad choice for a test series as it didn't age well culturally or visibility wise.

Maria even today remains a presence in fully parodies like Yuri is My Job and repeatedly referenced by other series.
