[Manga] Gate: Where the JSDF Fought! (Rescue)
-
Seems like Sekai Project is officially dropping it now since their Gate Page on their site is now a
404defunct for selling directly with removal of any mention of volume 2. A sad day that reminds us all that licenses still get dropped even years after the Tokyo Bubble Pop. -
@aruseus493 Just went to the page you linked in your post, and it came through just fine. Think the 404 had to have been a glitch. From the page you linked, it's easy enough to surf to the title page. https://sekaiproject.com/pages/gate-where-the-jsdf-fought-manga

@pleco_breeder They used to have you order from them directly. The only way to buy now is the first volume via amazon while before, you could pre-order the second volume too. (Which has never come.)
-
@aruseus493 I've never dealt with them, so don't know about their history and can't say for certain, but none of their manga have direct sales now and all redirect to Amazon. Likewise, checked their games and all of them re-direct to Steam. If they were selling direct, I would assume that this is just a change in their distribution chain.
In this current era, in-house distribution is an unnecessary expense for publishers of any format. This could also account for the staff reduction mentioned in your earlier post.
-
If anyone's at Anime Expo, any chance of harassing Sekai Project about the Gate manga? They're at booth 4623.
-
With the partnership J-NC now has with TOM to essentially rescue their languishing license of BEATLESS, it would be awesome if Sam could convince Sekai Project to do the same thing.
-
Here's a tweet from back in September from the mangaka mentioning how Alphapolis can't get in contact with Sekai Project... Sam, please contact the mangaka about rescuing the license. Maybe he'll be your in for Alphapolis. XD
-
Its been nearly two years since Sekai Project put out a delay and apology and there hasn’t been any news or updates about it at all when there have been nearly 16 volumes released in Japan and you’ve only released one 2016 (well 2 since volume 2 isn’t out yet). I’m just speculating that they should drop the manga and give it to another publishing company like seven seas entertainment, j-novel club, or yen press who might do a better job at translating the manga because all they're doing is mostly focusing on games instead of books.

“ A lot of users have expressed their opinions on whether or not we should continue on this series and the majority would prefer that we hand this license off to someone else. On that matter, we want to make it very clear to everyone that Sekai Publishing does not have any intention of continuing GATE. We have no control over which licensor can go and take up the mantle of localizing GATE but whichever company chooses to do so has our blessing and any cooperation we can offer.”
So you know; it is available.
-
If the series was ever to be licensed, I would rather it be the light novel or both. The series in terms of repertoire is closest to Outbreak Company which is a series I've also enjoyed in full.

Wow! The new year finally woke them up to comment on their awful incompetence.

Great time to submit the Gate manga in the Seven Seas request survey so they know people still want it. https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSeMXkIapddTjXY2z-tlQjDsGzI7x2FKvqGZsCc8s1RlkmVYZQ/viewform

I really hope that JNC picks this up. It would open up the Alphapolis catalog, and they have some good manga and light novels. (Isekai Tensei Soudouki and The New Gate to name a few). The New Gate manga was licensed by One Peace Books, so it does seem like their manga division is more open to English licenses than their light novel group.
-
It's official. Sekai Project dropped this manga and is considering closing their manga branch due to mismanagement. I suggest JNC rescue GATE.
-
Good luck convincing Alphapolis in letting foreigners license their stuff :(
Although I'd be very surprised if JNC does even get something from them, especially this.
-
@HarunaChieP Alphapolis is only strict regarding their LNs. There has been moderate success with their manga getting licensed. Although I'm hoping more for SS to license the Gate manga than JNC.
-
@Aruseus493 Oh that's good to hear somehow, at least there is a bit of hope now
-
I guess this update could be forwarded to all Alphapolis series but:
AlphaPolis Launches Alpha Manga App for Smartphones
It seems that at least for their manga, rather than go through a middleman they just decided to sell it directly. And this includes GATE.
-
I'll be interested in seeing how well this fares, you only get the first 3 chapters free and have to pay for everything else which seems to be the same model a lot of Japanese digital manga apps use, but will be different from the Viz model which gives the first 3 chapters free and if the manga is ongoing, the most recent 3 chapters so that users can follow the series, but if they want to read the back-catalogue or completed series they'll need to pay.
-
Honestly, I think it could work. MangaPlus and Shonen Jump having the latest three chapters free was to a)outpace people who make low-quality scanslations with the official thing and b)provide advertisement, as these series are incredibly popular both in Japan and the US.
AlphaPolis series, though? First of all, they’re all manga adaptations of isekai web novels - which means that if anyone is truly looking for spoilers, they can just look up a translation site. And again, something like THE NEW GATE or World Customize Creator or Re:Monster isn’t massively popular enough for some schmuck to steal a copy of the magazine before it officially releases and hastily make a machine-translated English version.
The closest comparison is maybe Kodansha, who also paywalls their newest chapters - at the very least, you can stay up to date with an Azuki subscription, but yeah.
