I think I'm ok with a small team focusing on quality over quantity. So far they've delivered on what they've promised, or gave reasonable explanations that didn't keep getting pushed into a nebulous future date...koff, koff, Sol press... I have to remind myself not to use JNC as a measuring stick to judge other companies - JNC is the outlier

@Timmaaah
I'm still waiting on a purchase option for volume 1. -
@Jon-Mitchell
I agree. But they've kinda gone silent except for the new releases they are now giving hints for. Less than a month out from a release and we're not hearing anything and that is a concern. Since they're fairly new I'm giving some leeway, but still... -
I hope things go well, I'm sort of interested in World Teacher myself.
-
I have wondered about not seeing vol 1 for purchase yet, but they have delivered on the side character vol 1 and 2 so far. I do wish they were faster too, but I think they will get there with time once the company starts to grow. The only thing I don't like so far is the bonus stories for side character are only in print. All new series purchased from them going forward will have the bonus stories in ebook just like JNC. I understand the reasoning why they won't go back or do the future volumes for side character like that too, but doesn't mean I have to like the answer.

10 months between volumes for World Teacher, wtf? They do realize it has 14 volumes in Japan, right? Do they only have a couple translators that go back and forth between projects?
-
@LegitPancake I think that is the case. I think their overall team is small. In their press release they talked about a rotation so new books can come on and the new series can come out in a timely manner without much delays. They also mention that they would only have 8 total series at a max at one given time for the foreseeable future so they can focus on each series as it deserves.

A volume each 10 months does not sound like "focusing on each series." Each series needs their own translation team to be focused on, rather than going back and forth between projects.
-
I think one TL team per series would be overkill unless they're planning on steamrolling things the way JNC is putting out bookworm, but a 10 month gap between volumes is a bit awkward when it's not even for a reason like wanting the digital and print releases to come out simultaneously.
-
I agree 10 months is too long and I would like it shorter. I also agree ideally each series would have their own translator team too, but I think they are just too small for now. I do think part of it is the digital and print are taking time away and also doing 2 languages too. I think if they only did English and digital then they could go faster.
-
Don't forget, these guys are new. They're breaking into a new market (LN's in Spanish), doing eBooks and print, and it looks like trying not to mess up. Who knows if that 10 months between volumes is 'worst case scenario' or if there is a rate limiting step (printing?). Also, we are not privy to the contracts, are they required to do simultaneous print and eBooks? in both languages? at a certain pace? Or are they dragging releases out because of some expense we know nothing of? or do they only have that few licenses?
regardless I'm cheering for their success, they seem like a scrappy underdog and the more LNs translated /sold the better! -
I don't think it's simultaneous release, their own schedule shows for Vol 1 the ebook comes out in February and the print edition is coming in March.
I'm going with really small team, possibly only 1 TL team given the fact they have no releases at all scheduled for a 2 month period mid-year and once we get into April, they go from releasing Vol 1 of their newly licensed series 1 month after the announcement to 5 months after they announce.
It looks a bit like they're taking in more than they actually have capacity to reasonably do, which isn't necessarily a problem for a new startup, but it can turn into a spectacular failure if things go badly. I'm assuming most of their schedule is actually tentative and may get reorganized in the coming months if things go well and they hit off a success that lets them expand their staff to more reasonably accommodate the number of titles they're licensing.

@Jon-Mitchell
I haven't forgotten which is why I am definitely giving them a lot of leeway here. I don't want to rush them while they are getting started, but eventually they will have to find a way to pick up the pace somewhat. 10 months in between releases is not going to cut it in the face of all of the other publishing companies with the exception of Sol Press. But, I hope that they learn and adapt to what they need to do and get things moving along. -
Has anyone else gotten a copy of "World Teacher" yet? To those who may have gotten one, is it me, or are there a plethora of mistakes that I'm seeing?
-
@lighthawk96 I want to get it as it was one of my favourite fan translations that I had read, but I'm going to wait till there are a few volumes for me to get before getting in to that one. Especially since they aren't planning vol. 2 till November.
-
I got my copy, but haven't read it. Though right now my account is a little jacked up on their site so I was given a copy another way. I have noticed on the epub file there are some error messages, but it could just be my copy and I'm waiting to see when I can officially download a copy from the site.

There are quite a few minor mistakes throughout the book - including stuff like spelling errors, obvious typos, and missing spaces. Overall, I'd say that the translation is good insofar as it's mostly good English (and the stuff that isn't is the kind of stuff that plenty of people mess up), but they obviously needed another editing pass to catch a lot of the small stuff.

From what I remember, they said something about the bonus content in books from their shop. Is there any bonus content in there? Just wondering.

For volume 1 of Wold Teacher, there are some short chapters at the end which show scenes from earlier on and are clearly added onto the book rather than being the next chapter in the story, but I have no clue whether they're only included in the version on their store or whether the original Japanese release included them. They could be bonus stories similar to what JNC often has, or they could have always been released as part of volume 1 even in Japan.
Personally, I don't see any reason to buy the books from anywhere but their store anyway, since they're selling them DRM-free.

Side Character 1 and 2 have their bonus contents locked to the physical books. I have digital, so I don't have any of that, no clue what's in there.
