@Aruseus493 where does it mention the selling epubs? I didn't find it on their website but I am notoriously poor with my internet skills

It's not on their site yet. But they answer questions pretty easily on their discord.

Well, they seem to know what they are doing from the synopsis (english).

I am personally looking forward to their releases. Probably going to end up buying "There’s No Way a Side Character Like Me Could Be Popular, Right?" since I love SoL and romcoms. I wonder how the pricing is going to be though.

Any news on release dates? Phisically/digitally.

Wow so soon? I did not expect that - I guess we are only talking about a digital release on the 29th, or?

None of their licenses are appealing to me, but I'm happy to see that quite a number of people are hype for the rom-com one, it would be cool to get a new good publisher.
I just hope they don't end up doing a Sol Press, dragging licenses in their fall.

@Happy Only digital for now. They said they hope to give "Side Character" a print after the pandemic blows over, available on Amazon and their store first, and then Rightstuf/Book Depository later.

While I'm happy to see a new publisher I'm honestly a bit concerned about their catalogue. When JNC launched it had 6 or 7 title to help jumpstart them. If Tentai only launches with 1 title with only one more announced it might be hard to gain momentum.

@Eternal-Wanderer JNC needed to sell the club part on launch so required more series to get up and running. No one would subscribe monthly for one book serialized. Bulk had always been a part of their business plan.

I think most other publishers have started smaller (Vertical, Sol, Cross Infinite, Seven Seas, even Yen published Spice & Wolf and just a few others before properly digging in) so I don't think it'll be a problem. What matters a whole lot more is how quickly they get those volume 2s out.

                          Talking about those covers? SCNR

More seriously, I agree with your point. For a new, independent publisher, it makes sense to go digital with few titles to reduce opex until they have proven themselves.

The pricing bothers me. I realize they're a Spanish company but they seem to be using the larger English LN reader base subsidize the Spanish one by charging a 50% premium for English editions of the same book. I would give the book they got a try if not for that, it just seems sketchy to me. Are they actually based out of Spain btw? I saw on Reddit they are only doing things in USD, which I'm not sure is allowed in the EU market.

@trashboat Their stores will only be in US currency (which is weird given they are based in Spain), but Amazon and other places should be regionally priced. But wow I just looked on reddit as well and yea $10 for English and $6 for Spanish for the same ebooks? That's just ridiculous...

@LegitPancake yeah I saw in the discord people were also putoff. They never replied to my long ass response on Reddit (not surprised) and I don't think they will. Really just blows my mind that they think it is a good business model to piss off the established market in the hopes of making a slight lift in a smaller market. I vote with my dinero, so if they want it they need equal pricing.

They revealed on their Discord that the prices were decided with the publisher (Overlap), so I guess they deserve half the blame. The print prices are in line with other publishers, at least, so I'll just wait for that in order to not feel like I'm paying an English tax.

@myskaros I saw the screen shot of the publisher helping, but my gut instinct is that the company pitched it as a way to drive more Spanish readers and the company said sure and now they are saying the company "helped". I'm also not really buying the idea that Overlap insisted on a price discrepancy in general given that they have let JNC use the lower price for English. I don't think new Spanish readers are going to be like "Oh wait they are charging more for English than Spanish, let me buy light novels for the first time ever!"

Like you said, I'm not going to pay an English tax either and I have a hard time stomaching supporting a company that goes for that. I'm kind of surprised how much this is bothering me tbh 😅

Maybe the reason that English is more expensive is that they translate from JP > ES > EN. 😆

                                      JNC LN Ranking:
                                      1st - Rokujouma
                                      2nd - Realist Hero
                                      3rd - Bookworm

Different language should lead to different price. I see no problem, just a little bit funny since it's the same publisher.

I could look at the English/Espanol thing in a couple of different ways :

It's not that English costs more, it's that Spanish costs less

I do not know the size of the Spanish speaking market for LN's but I know that it is smaller than the English speaking market, it might even be a 'frontier' marketplace- Tentai is literally building up the demand in a less developed market (LN's in Spanish) or at least it's new to Overlap. To do so they are discounting aggressively. Something they don't have to do on Amazon USA/in English. An Epub of a LN is $7-12 (US) , as long as they stay in that range, the buying public will get what they expect.

(This might be an experiment by Overlap, testing the market for Spanish)

                                          I read banned books

@BartzBB they mentioned before that they are translating JP->EN and JP->ES, so, thankfully, no double translations.
