Acquisitions Speculation - General

@bloodygaikotsu Most licences are probably awaited by some people, but if you look at the licencing suggestions, none of those series are in the first pages. Potion loli, like you said because it's a FUNA work is probably the most ask for but the other are quite unknow, it doesn’t mean they won't be interesting or do well, personnaly I will probably check the YP about alchimiste, but still we've yet to get a licence which would hype most people, in this batch of licencing.
-
@jon-mitchell That one was in the first batch of manga licenses which had different hints.
-
@novurdim
lol
I know but that's the only time-related mystery I could think of lol -
@raitoiro
As a person of extreme minority here I dunno what to say here lol. (There is a reason why I don't have premium membership, it's pretty useless to me ... like have you checked my license suggestions threads lol they make the last 3 pages or so lol)We do agree but I was just saying potion Loli, at least, had a group that's been asking for it and everyone expected it.
but, yeah, no one knows where all other works came from like Isekai Ryouridou has 14+ volumes but ain't as requested as smth like Risou no Himo Seikatsu or Mondaiji or ( to my own surprise) Remake Our Life!So I wonder about the background work more

I don't care even if I hate all licenses but I just like to see different subgenres/genres within the one set.
Weird declaration, I know. You can have a set of series that are in the same genre or sub-genre and still have them be different. I think we can all agree that Shield hero, Overlord, Log Horizon, and Konosuba are all very different series even though they are all Isekai. Scorpions and Spiders are both Arachnids, yet both are very different different creatures. I don't think it is fair to judge solely on the genre or sub-genres. Genres only tells us a broad class of settings or story types. Mystery does not have to be about a murder, it can be solving how a precious jewel found it's way in a Turkey (Sherlock Holmes) or the nature of a monster or character (monogatari series). O view books kind of like a bedroom, the cover and genres are what you see on the door before you enter while the actual story and the prose are inside the room that you cannot see. Reading the book is like investigating the room, is it clean and organized, is it messy, what kind of things does the person keep, how dense is the room? The door will only give a small glimpse.

Just as we can all agree that they still have a set of similarities which can tire you out immensely.
-
@novurdim I know your speaking broadly and not just about those 4 specific series, that being said between Overlord, Konosuba, Sheild Hero, & Log Horizon I have read whatever is available in English and I find them all to be distinct (even with overlapping story plots) so I haven’t gotten stale of those 4 yet
-
Not really... Overlord and Log Horizon have very little in common. The similarities are very few and largely superficial. And after the opening arcs of Overlord, non-existent.
-
True, it's not an isekai-oriented community for nothing.
-
I think of myself as less an “isekai fan” and more of a, if the story is good I like it, and if it isn’t I don’t...
-
@hyperion The problem with the most popular books not getting translated might not just be because of Yen Press... it could be the authors themselves not agreeing to let their books be licensed in English. This is all speculation because I doubt they would ever reveal the reason why the most popular are not getting licensed.

@drone205
You took my very small target and just expanded it more than I actually said.I said more than once, genres have different subgenres and each one is really different and targets different people.
My comment is more about audience it targets than the genre itself tbh.
Like I said I don't care if all are fantasy but as long as they target different people.
I didn't even speak of targeting people outside JNC main audience.
Isekai is just a troop, most of the new ones sure sound the same but I know there are a lot of different ones and target different people from comedy to romcom to psychological. And if you're wondering about my dislikes then I am not the biggest fan of Action, while I love slice of life anime and manga (I never felt that SOL novels are top priority when I'm purchasing. They are nice every not and then but I will always prioritize other series when I buy my novels)
However, that's also not point of my comment and remarks.
I didn't complain cuz it's not my type but I'm talking about balance. You mentioned 4 titles and not same kind of people are reading them.
I mean THAT!
Why announcing 3 titles of same type targeting the same audience group together? It feels like alienating the rest of your audience. I think it's better to arrange your license to cover all or most your audience not just one group.
let's take Seven Seas whose audience is more diverse and take a look at their license survey:
They have LGBT community around them so they have 2 slots just for it.
They have Classic slot too to cover that part of audience. That's what I mean, balancing licenses to cover the audience they got (aside from offbeats that are meant to attract new type of audience)
Also, Monogatari is bad choice as mystery example.
It's only Bakemonogatari (Occult detective) and mystery of Ougi but the main point and like 99% of the series is coming of age (like Seishun Buta & Kokoro Connect)If you want examples of mysteries without sleuths: Kanae Minato''s Confessions
not about crimes: Biblia
Low-stake mystery with youth stories: Hyouka
etc. -
I guess I'm interested in all 3, so it doesn't look glaring to me as much as a negative that all 3 fill a similar niche (despite being different concepts; food novel, potion novel, and reverse Isekai SOL).
To me, it serves to fill a niche and build a customer base for these types of titles (SOL Isekai / Reverse series that aren't serious business).
If they ever try mystery or horror genre again, it'd be kind of nice to get three short volume works at once instead of a drip feed of titles.
I would still like more diversity in future licenses, but this particular batch doesn't bother me. The initial 5 or so manga did though (and you can argue that was similar, 4 Isekai LN with varying degrees of action, one real world fantasy series, but just the fact the 4 were LN Manga adaptations, it didn't interest me).

Manga Hints:
Not Actually An Imouto Harem
LN hints:
My Frenchman Will Be Pleased
I'm not 100% sure if the Stocks one refers to Cooking with Wild Game though or if the Frenchman one applies to it instead. Thoughts?
Gonna do some research tomorrow... Maybe. Of course, they could be announced by then I guess.
"Not an Imouto Harem" I'm thinking has Lil Sisters in the title.
"My Frenchman will be Pleased" seems so random. I don't know the reference (people said Obra Dinn; game takes place on an ocean vessel? So something with ocean liners / ships? Cute girls as ships? I don't know).

Edit: Double post, whoops.

let's take Seven Seas whose audience is more diverse and take a look at their license survey:Putting aside how I think the three titles so far in this "batch" are actually wider and less overlapping in target audience than you might think...
Your post makes it sound like when JNC or some other company licenses LNs, they go "okay, let's license these X titles in this batch" and then they go license them and then once everything is done they announce everything in that batch together, but that's definitely not how it works at all.
Obviously, with no personal experience myself I can't say exactly how licensing works, but I do know that the time to license a title can vary greatly, whether it be from making and waiting for accepted offers or finalizing contracts. Of the 3 titles in this "batch" so far, maybe offers for them were made alongside titles announced at AX but took longer to get accepted/finalized, or maybe they were made alongside a number of titles for other parts of the audience but they got accepted/finalized sooner than those other titles. And once everything's finalized, there's no real reason to not announce it in the next "batch", certainly not for some kind of "balancing announcements" reason. Money was paid for that license, so might as well get it making back money sooner rather than later.
Also, the comparison with Seven Seas's licensing survey isn't very good; of course SS can ask for a diverse list of requests in a survey, but that doesn't at all mean they will license, for example, each category's most requested title in one batch. They might, for example, license eight of the most requested fantasy/isekai titles and only one of the most requested yuri titles. And, of course, it's not like whatever gets licensed from this survey will all get announced in the same batch.
-
I noticed the announcements/reveals for jnc this time around are coming in ones or twos when usually they're all announced together. Is this going to be the norm from now on? I personally prefer the group announcements even if they can't be read right away.
-
@falcade As far as I know this is not the first time that new licenses are announced individually or in small batches of 2/3.
-
@terabyte Right, nvm then. I don't know why I remembered it that way. maybe because the gaps feel especially long this time.
-
@falcade I think it's because of how busy Sam is with his move. A lot of stuff is a bit on the slow side as he is readjusting and getting settled so it might be a little bit before everything is running smoothly and we're back on track of big license dumps he loves to drop on us. XD
-
@terabyte Wasn't Bakarina and Beast head announced separately? Or am I miss remembering it?
