Seven Seas - April 2020 survey available!
-
I guess I won't be putting Record of Lodoss War under the classic category this year. Now I need to choose between Heroic Legend of Arslan or Twelve Kingdoms. I'll have to do some research into BL novels before I decide on one. As for yuri, I didn't fill that category out last year since I didn't read the genre, but I've been enjoying Sexiled and Otherside Picnic, so after looking around I think I'll go with Murasakiiro no Qualia. Not only does it sound interesting, it's also only one volume and is a sci-fi/mystery like Otherside Picnic, which we could use more of.
I'll wait until after Anime NYC to fill out the survey though, just in case.
-
@hyperion Murasakiiro no Qualia is really great, my friend recommended that to me because of how the genre (sci-fi) is in the same level of Otherside Picnic 😅
Waiting for the announcements as well before getting on to that survey 👀

The yuri/BL/LGBT categories take way too much place, especially since it's rarely the most important part of a book, having more precise category for horror/action/surnatural/comedy/... would have been way more useful.
That aside:- Yuri LN: Do you think someone like you can defeat the demon lord
- BL LN: Shinsekai yori
- LGBT LN: Qualia the purple
- fantasy/isekai LN: The girl who ate a death god
- Comedy LN: Kono Sekai ga Game da to Ore dake ga Shitte Iru Vo
- Surnatural/action manga and LN: Kara no Kyoukai
- Drama manga: Ill boy ill girl
- Ecchi LN: Sevens
- Ecchi Manga: Medaka box

@caramelwithoutthesalt said in Seven Seas - November/December 2019 survey available!:
Aside from the survey itself looking like a complete and utter cluttered mess, I’m baffled at their lumping of different genres together into single questions. It shows a lack of respect for each of those genres, as if they’re an afterthought. I’m aware that it reduces the amount of questions to fill, but seeing them relegated behind genres not everyone reads just lowers my opinion of them more.
The only part I could agree on is the "Action, Horror or Supernatural" section. I've yet to see an Isekai without Fantasy elements. Comedy, SoL and/or Drama also go together fairly often, so combining them into one section makes sense. Ecchi and Fanservice... no explanation needed there.
Besides, their neutral questions seen on previous surveys are far more appropriate because some titles transcend multiple genres. Nothing stopped them from asking “what manga/light novel would you like us to license?” in those 16 boxes.
They've been doing that all year though. It's pretty obvious that this time around (much like last year's Christmas survey, I believe) they're looking for more specific categories, and there's nothing inherently wrong with that. The neutrals will be back in the January survey, I'm sure.
Also, another point Seven Seas fails to rectify: how are casuals, or those who aren’t up to date on the entire manga/light novel scene, know what to pick, when they don’t even know what is out there? They can’t read Japanese, or know what websites to visit?
In my opinion, that's up to the fans themselves. Seven Seas has no obligation to spoon-feed the casual/not-up-to-date crowd. I wonder how many of them even know the surveys are a thing. If they wish to be more informed they can easily google the information or ask around or look at the publishers' sites.
Plucking licenses out of thin air doesn’t sound plausible, or browsing unknown corners of the internet for 30-60 minutes doesn’t sound appealing at all, just for Seven Seas to never license them.
The survey is by no means a guarantee that what you write in will get licensed. It's just one factor among many that goes into licensing decisions. I would love for them to license Shakugan no Shana, but I know it's too long, too old, urban fantasy doesn't sell anymore, etc. So I don't expect them to actually get it. Putting it in the survey is like raising it's chances from 0 to 0.1%, that's why I do it. Because it's better than not doing it.
Their whole survey will remain a joke to me until they start listening to EVERYONE.
No company is ever going to please everyone. I'm sorry but that's just a fact. If they're not getting the titles you want for whatever reason, then that just means you have more money to give to other publishers that are.

JNC has 2 isekai without fantasy world ("Me, a genius?!", and one of the "First and Last idol" story), plus SS likely consider VRMMO novel as isekai, and thoose are also quite different from fantasy novel. Also while then can sometimes go together SoL, comedy and Drama would have deserved different categories, as something like "The empty box and zeroth Maria" (drama) and "Lazy dungeon master" (comedy) have nothing in common.

@raitoiro As I recall, even Genius
No opinion on Idol, since I've not read it.
Well, some readers consider VRMMOs a type of isekai, so there is wiggle room for argument there I guess. I agree that it sucks we have to choose between a drama/comedy/comedic drama for that one spot, but like... There will be other surveys after this one.
Ultimately, I just don't see much point in people ragging on Seven Seas for this survey when they can and will still write in their desired licenses (if only two) again when January rolls around.
@caramelwithoutthesalt said in Seven Seas - November/December 2019 survey available!:
From now on, I’m just going to cut my losses and continue buying the Seven Seas licenses I actually enjoy (which are quite a few), while waiting for their new series I like, to start.
See, there you go. That's the spirit.
-
Some of the stuff I've asked for got licensed:
Adachi x Shimamura.
How to Train Your Demon.
Machi Maho.So I don't have much complaints (other than I don't like that I can't vote for a drama + a comedy in separate options this survey, and that action will likely garner more votes than horror with them sharing a section).
I try to balance between asking for stuff I like that they don't currently publish, and stuff I think their mainline audience would like and I would too (monster girls, Yuri).

@doublemangekyo
Didn't read Genius, but from the blurb it seems more like a SF world (aside from the reincarnation). But I do agree that it's not really useful to rage on SS surveys. I just find it a bit annoying that it had 3 entries for Yuri/BL/LGBT but grouped more relevant categories into one big group.
Well I doupt SS really take into account the survey results anyways, especially since unlicensed title usually have numerous fan-title. -

Oh, it's definitely a SF world that he's reincarnated to. What I meant was

@doublemangekyo Interesting, is it good?
I heard the series end rather abruptly is it worth reading despite that? -
@raitoiro I thought it was pretty good, yeah.
It's not so much that it ended abruptly as it just... didn't end. If you didn't know about the hiatus, you'd think a vol.4 was well on the way.
Looking at the web novel, the author has started posting chapters again this year (6 so far). So we may or may not get a vol.4 in the future. I hope we do... -
