As summer continues on, we hope everyone is staying safe and healthy, and we've got some new catchup series to keep members occupied!

The summer 2021 anime season continues, and with it, so does our catchup selection! This time, read the light novels for How a Realist Hero Rebuilt the Kingdom and the manga for Seirei Gensouki: Spirit Chronicles!

Kelvin wakes up in strange dimension, but has no memories! Turns out he bartered them for stronger abilities for his other world adventures! That doesn't explain his insatiable thirst for battle, though... Follow along on the journey of the Black Summoner! And not to be outdone, we're also giving you the story of a boy who stopped a truck from hitting him... but went to another world anyway!!! Wataru (title abbreviated) comes with his memories intact, but gains a whole boatload of exclamation points in the exchange!!!!!

Finally a few shorter selections will be available as well! The Sorcerer's Receptionist chronicles the trials and tribulations of working behind the counter of those oft-seen fantasy guilds; Side-By-Side Dreamers, from the author of Otherside Picnic, features a team of girls fighting against sleep monsters; and Occultic;Nine, part of the Science Adventure series, describe a supernatural mystery enveloping nine strangers...

So much to read in August, hope you enjoy!

Whoever said nothing's impossible never tried slamming a revolving door.

If you like the first volume and you have the budget for it, you might want to stop and buy the premium editions from JNC instead.

There are a lot of good bonus stories that add to the main story, with side character POVs and stories to flesh them out as well as some fun main character stories. Offhand I can't think of any other other series with better bonus stories.

List of bonus content here (only in the JNC premium, not in the Amazon, kobo, etc.): https://forums.j-novel.club/topic/305/premium-e-book-bonus-contents-list?page=1

I DON"T PLAN TO GIVE WATARU ANOTHER CHANCE IT'S JUST TOO LOUD!!!!!!!one!

I might try Sorcerer's Receptionist again though the premise of dreaming of being a guild clerk and spending years training for it didn't appeal to me.

Black Summoner is fun, and Realist Hero is one of my favorites.

Once she actually gets there, we learn that their concept of "receptionist" isn't at all like what we think of in the modern world, and you really do need to be an extremely powerful mage with a good head on your shoulders and lots of knowledge in your head to pull off the job properly. So don't let the "spending years in school to become a receptionist" bit scare you away.

                  We can help! :)

What do you use for reading, and do you have a PC or mac?

(Hmm, is there a FAQ with a set of recipes for different devices somewhere? If not, perhaps there should be. I has a sad at people missing out on good content.)

I know I'm not who you asked, but I use Moon+ Reader Pro on an Android tablet, and I direct-download the epubs from JNC directly to my tablet, no desktop/laptop required.

That's what I mean about it being nice if we had a collection of how-tos in one place for different (device, device, reader app) combinations to send people to.

For Premium, I download to PC then use the free Calibre software to copy the books to my Kindle e-ink reader but other people read on iPad, iPhone, Android tablets & phones, non-kindle e-ink readers.

Oh this intrigues me, I have read a good chunk (like 6 volumes) of realist hero then just fell off, but now it seems that I must open thine wallet and buy another series, seeing as how I own all of black summoner right now.

Hm. Might give Black Summoner a try, and Occultic;Nine if I'm in the mood... Well if nothing else I can reread Receptionist ^^ Fingers crossed that its WN sequel eventually gets enough content to be made into another LN volume.

To anyone checking out The Sorcerer's Receptionist who is unsure of how they feel about the central romance, I volunteer a mini-analysis I wrote some months ago to provide an alternate perspective. In terms of spoilers, even though it's in the V2 discussion, it only covers events that happen in V1, as it was originally written for manga readers. To give a spoiler-free summary: "this isn't a story of one-sided bullying - it's mutual antagonism."

Okay, I feel like I remember someone recommending Receptionist in another series discussion (maybe Great Cleric?) so I'm gonna start with that. Might give Black Summoner a try as well, and then once I'm done with them, touch on Realist Hero. Leaving it for last because based on everything I've heard about the series, if I do enjoy it, I'm highly likely to buy the volumes and if not, I probably won't want to read them all this month anyway.

For Premium, on an iPad, I download with the browser and share it from there with Apple Books. It automatically synchs it with Apple drive and can then read on my other apple devices.

Is Occultic Nine complete? The anime was nice, I'm curious to read the novel too if it has a conclusion.

@lex It isn't. It was a nice read, but it's not complete at all.

Receptionist was a nice read. Wataru was underrated but does require a particular sense of humor.

See @pcj 's note above. You can try buying a premium edition of something you like that has bonus content (see my link), then using the download button, then opening it in any ebook reader app that supports EPUB format like Moon Reader.
