[ROUNDUP] Results from week 1 of the suggestion melee!
-
So, now that we've had a week to see how this forum is working, I thought I would compile what's popular and let you all see at a glance what titles the JNC forums are raving about!
Something released in English
- Chivalry of a Failed Knight - 30 votes
- Gamers! - 25 votes
- Mushoku Tensei: Jobless Reincarnation - 24 votes
- Problem Children are Coming from Another World, Aren't They? - 22 votes
- Classroom of the Elite - 21 votes
Ikki and Stella take the top by storm with a meaty lead! This magic highschool variant had an anime that aired alongside A1's darling, The Asterisk War, and proved a bigger hit with its underdog protagonist and more direct romance, even though Yen Press was quick to pick up AW for English release.
In second, we have Gamers!, an otaku romcom with an anime that was largely able to shy away from the blatant reference pandering inherent in any otaku-focused story and spend more time on the romance and the comedy! This anime really came out of nowhere, being "against the trend" as far as the kinds of anime we get each season, as well as being one of studio Pine Jam's first anime productions.
Mushoku Tensei has been the online LN community's isekai rock, with almost every redditor looking for random LN recommendations getting directed to this title. Its manga adaptation is already being published by Seven Seas, too! It's known as simply being an extremely solid isekai story.
Problem Children was a very popular anime when it aired, showing multiple kids with powers from different Earths working together to save some kids and beat up bad guys, and Classroom of the Elite had a rather well-received anime adaptation late last year as well (though I personally find it overrated :P). It's not surprising that there are people who want to see more of both of these stories!
Wholly Japanese series
- I, the Demon Lord, Took a Slave Elf as My Wife, but How Do I Love Her? - 40 votes
- Haken no Kouki Altina - 27 votes
- Tensei Shitara Ken Deshita - 24 votes
- Sono Mono. Nochi Ni… - 21 votes
- The Hero's Success is Now! - 21 votes
- Zettai ni Hatarakitakunai Dungeon Master ga Damin wo Musaboru made - 21 votes
- Mamonotsukai no Mofumofu shitei Seikatsu - 20 votes
Wow! This demon lord elf wife thing pretty much blew every other title out of the water! I have no idea what it's about, but its collection of buzzword tropes seems to have everyone else interested ;)
In second, we have Altina, which is written by How NOT to Summon a Demon Lord's author with illustrations by The Magic in this Other World is Too Far Behind's artist. This is an alt. history medieval war story largely free of fantastical forces that focuses on the young princess Altina and her unconfident bookworm-cum-strategist Regis as they boldly rise from exile to challenge the throne of emperor.
Third place is the next in the "I was killed and reincarnated into a random object!" series, featuring Master, the overpowered magical sword, and his wielder, the explosively cute black catkin Fran! After saving Fran from a monster attack and freeing her from slavery, Master decides to become her sword, teaching her how to fight, and cooking delicious Japanese food for her with telekinesis! They travel around beating up monsters and bad guys, searching for the method for Fran to evolve to a higher form, and for Master's origins.
Fourth is a 3-way tie between Wazu, the heartbroken teen who somehow got a harem without him knowing, Tatsuya, the isekai returnee who can't integrate back into society and uses alchemy to get by, and Keima, the dungeon master who just wants to sleep and ogle girls' feet.
Finally, in seventh, we have what appears to be bliss, in multiple forms, with the Monster Tamer's Fluffy Master/Apprentice Life! While killing monsters and demons and aliens and getting stronger by fighting are all popular subjects, there's always room for relaxing slice-of-life where some people just do cool things occasionally during their nice, peaceful lives :)
There you have it, your JNC forum most-wanted LN series after 1 week! If you want to boost your favorite series, or just get more people interested in it, post more in its topic about new books or drama CDs or whatever, to get the conversation rolling! If you have any questions about why a series is popular or whether you might like it, post those as well!
I might try to do these roundup topics once a month or so, if I remember or get around to it :) Let me know what you thought of this format, or if you'd want me to change anything for next time!
The most important words a man can say are, "I will do better." These are not the most important words any man can say. I am a man, and they are what I needed to say.

insert haughty Ojou sama voice: Oh-hohohohohoho, My Chivalry of a Failed Knight is first in something released in English and second overall! Not even Mahouka Tensei can beat it in 6th place. The time will come when it will be NUMBER 1!

I would wholly recommend people to go through various threads just to even check out random series and see if they are for you. Most of the stuff I request, I've personally either read the fan-translations before they died, or read the manga adaptation which is being fan-scanlated. Only like one or two series I haven't personally read, but that's cause they're series I want to fill in a gap and I've extensively looked up to decide if I'd want it or not.
In addition, if you want to support a series, you can vote by both clicking the little upvote button, and by commenting and giving activity that shows people want the series. There are series I'd be interested in, but not fully invested so I only upvote. But if there's something I really want, you can damn well bet I'll comment to try and drive some discussion.
On the topic of submitting series, please people, try to include more than just a half-baked synopsis. Include the publisher, maybe the LNDB link, and even associated titles. (Someone posted just a Japanese title today and a synopsis which could barely be called that.) So yea, please try to put some effort into your request posts. You gotta really sell these series to not just random readers out for more stuff, but also to Sam who will be wondering if someone actually wants the series, or if they're just randomly recommending stuff.
-
Kind of picking up from Aruseus's post, while you should probably show some restraint, do keep in mind that you can vote up to once for every topic, and, more likely than not, most people are just voting for anything they think sounds interesting. I believe there are at least a few people out there "saving" their votes for various reasons, but just keep in mind that your carefully chosen titles are probably going to get drowned in the deluge of "vote for anything I likers" :(
-
That's kind of the point, though, because that same sort of reasoning is what drives purchase decisions.
-
Oh yea, I absolutely hold back my votes only for stuff I truly want rather than just whatever catches my interest.
-
@myskaros I am kinda a bit loose with my up-votes. Anything that I have been interested in quite some time will probably get a vote, anything that is very slice of life and a light fluffy read will also probably get my vote too. In a sense, I have high-low Standards; I will read any slice of life or light fluffy reads but I am not afraid to say "I just do not like this series for X, Y and, Z"

I try to also say what the series is about in my words and/or sell the idea. I think most of my suggestions are like 2-3 sentences while a select few are nearing paragraph length. Quite a few of the series I suggested are series I do not know that much about but I know it has stuff that will interest me like it is a light fluffy read for example.
-
I am fairly hesitate with my upvote and comment, if its from a publisher JNC has not worked with before i simply wont comment my support, false hope and such.
I would rather focus on series JNC at least has a shot of picking up...for now that is.
-
For me, my vote definitely goes based on:
-
Rumblings heard about a series - Classroom of the Elite would be an example. Rakudai + 86 too. I try to avoid info as much as possible, so I don't usually comment in these threads.
-
Character Designs - Lots of dark haired gals or unique looking characters draw my attention (I know blonde designs in Western style Isekai are popular, so I'd prefer to throw my hat in for more variety). Muscular dudes. Maybe vibrant color usage. Background stuff is great too, I just can't really be sold if my image of the characters is them effectively ants on a beautiful backdrop. I need to see the designs.
-
Unique setting - Non-Isekai is nice. If it's Isekai, and the cover + title don't give me any idea what it's about, then I may look at the description to see if it's doing anything unique.
-
Male and Female supporting cast - Just seeing multiple guys in the background to go with the female cast is enough for me to consider a title. I want some side characters to get together. It'll take the load off our hero's potential harem count too you would think...
-
Mature designs - I voted up a few things with youthful designs, though those are things where I'm not expecting anything Ecchi, just comedy and fun. If it's mature content, I'd prefer mature looking characters.
-
-
Pretty much all my upvotes have been going to slice-of-life stuff so I guess I'm just here to promote the SoL genre on JNC...
That said, with recommendations, one thing I like to do is to say "this title may interest fans of [insert various similar LNs already on JNC]". That can not only catch the attention of those looking for what to upvote, but also overall provide reasoning for why the title would fit well on the site in the first place.
-
The list kinda reminds me how my taste differs from the majority here:
Almost nothing I really want is on the list but Gamers and Problem Children are Coming from Another World, Aren't They? T _ T
Anything else I upvoted on this list (which are like other 4 titles) was just "ah, I might buy this if it's out" upvote.

I'm pretty much the same, but I'm not too fazed by it. I think they'll throw us a bone with something that feels different from the popular every once in a while. Sometimes people don't know what they want until they have it too (I'm sure I'll like some of the series I haven't upvoted too).
Even JNC's super duper success with Realist Hero was surprising despite thinking it would do well.

When you licensed Realist Hero did you expect it to do as well as it is?
Do well? Sure. Be our best seller? No. Its success definite change my internal meta so to speak.
You just never fully know how readers will respond, and strict focus testing isn't always good. I like to see the passion and interest from the publisher in some of the elements of series JNC has licensed I think, like the science and historical knowledge elements in particular. It's good to see publisher's license stuff they're interested in too, makes them seem human.
It's probably still good business sense to stick to your guns 9/10 times, but it's good to have that once in a blue moon different type of book to diversify the lineup. I'd say, of the ongoing publications, "Me A Genius" is that right now. Sure, blonde cover gal, but not an Isekai, takes place in a form of reality, and has a plot you don't see often. It doesn't really read like anything we have currently.

@terrence
Well, I am not that much of a picky reader so I am pretty sure I'll enjoy whatever is available but I just won't fall in love with it, u know~ -

I wonder if one of the titles in the top ten is the highly requested title in the current hints to be revealed at AX 2018?
