Yen Press and Seven Seas underdelivered.
And it's not like JNC overdelivered either, unfortunately. Before actually reading them, my top 3 LN announcements would probably be: 1) Bunny Girl; 2) Altina; 3) Majo no Tabitabi (or maybe Bullet Witchcraft and Ghost Program?); - so even with a relatively weak effort Yen Press steals the show anyway lol
-
@novurdim total agree with you all three major publishers really under delivered, there were a few gems Altina is a decent pick up but nothing really got me excited all In all been very disappointed in the last number of batches from all the publishers.
-
As far as light novels go, excluding auxiliary announcements like the Rokujouma print Kickstarter, JNC's announcements fall squarely in the "guess I'll check it out" realm; nothing particularly excites me but a good number of stuff at least looks interesting enough for me to try out prepubs for. That's really about as much as I can hope for; hopefully some of them will turn out to be super good or at least lots of fun.
I suppose Demon Lord, Retry is one I'm at least looking forward to; the anime has some issues but they're mainly with the animation so it should be good to read in novel/manga form.
The auxiliary announcements are what especially stand out to me, though. Kickstarter for Rokujouma prints are great, and the sub-license for The Combat Baker and Automaton Waitress from Bookwalker is interesting, too. Wonder if JNC can get print rights for that, too. The whole Tokyo Otaku Mode thing is odd, and Beatless isn't enough to make me want to sign up with them, but it could be something worth keeping an eye on.
And we have a new publisher to license books from!

So, now that JNC has a relationship with Futabasha, here's a list of all Futabasha titles that have been requested here if you're interested in giving them another look:
- Elf Tensei Kara no Cheat Kenkoku-ki
- Guild no Cheat na Uketsukejo (The Guild’s Cheat Receptionist)
- Hisshou Dungeon Un'ei Houhou
- Monster no Goshuujin-sama (Monster Tamer)
- Shingan no Yuusha (Hero of God Eye)
- Shini Yasui Kōshaku Reijō to Nana-ri no Kikōshi
- Shinka no Mi: Shiranai Uchi ni Kachigumi Jinsei (The Seed of Evolution ~Before I knew it I was one of the champions~)
- Suterareta Yuusha no Eiyuutan
- Takarakuji de 40-oku Atattandakedo Isekai ni Ijuu Suru
As for Sol Press, while licensing an H-novel is interesting in the greater industry picture, I have no interest in them myself.
Finally, overall, there has been very little isekai in the LN announcements across the board. Only JNC had any at all, and even then, out of eight titles announced, only two seem to be isekai, with one of them (Otherside Picnic) looking very much not like your typical LN-style isekai at all. There definitely seems to be more in the way of non-isekai fantasy, though. What does this all mean, if anything, I'll leave for others to speculate.
-
agree with you very disappointed, I also think the general feeling is they under delivered because if you look at the past number of posts the major topic is the Kickstarter and not any of there new titles was the highlight of the show.
-
@stardf29 I missed the announcement about Combat Baker. That’s cool to hear. I’ve only read the first two but I think it’s a solid series and am happy it’ll get notice outside of BookWalker now.
-
@ant13099 Well, that's to be expected, most of the titles are an unknown quantity so it's difficult to have a conversation about them.
I suppose we should separate excitement from quality. Are the announcements exciting? No, we hardly know anything about them. Could they be good picks? Yeah, sure, we just don't know yet.

What I think is Isekai titles are really really big in Japan and the more popular the title the more costly it is to licenses
-
So what huge currently published series aren’t already being published over here? I think some of the disappointment comes from the fact that we are now getting a lot of the heavy hitters, so what’s still around that doesn’t have specific licensing issues are stuff people don’t know as much about (that said a lot of stuff coming over did have a suggestions thread so it’s not like no one wanted it).
It’s been a while since I’ve watched Justin’s Light Novel Top 10 in Japan, so I’m not as in touch with what’s currently popular. What I remember when I was watching was a lot of stuff we already had, some Isekai stuff that was already into double digits of volume number (which I’m assuming makes it a riskier prospect to license as the whole Isekai thing may wane in popularity and you don’t want to drop nor be stuck with 15 volumes to publish of an unsuccessful series), and then a few random things.

I am just going to quote myself from yesterday

Let’s all remember that this is a topic to discuss speculation of potential future licenses, if you wanna talk about how you feel about already licensed novels make a new topic.
Also let’s all remember to be respectful of each other’s opinions, what one individual may consider to be “good” & “popular”, may not fit everyone’s definition of those terms.
Beyond that I fully understand that when speculating about upcoming licenses that will generally lead into how we feel about new licenses, however some users are posting several times about how disappointed and dissatisfied they are.
It is fine if you wanna let others know that you aren’t happy, however to do it several times and on the same page is going a bit far.
By all means make a whole new topic just about how disappointed you are with the state of licenses coming from Japan, as long as it doesn’t delve into childish antics or something similar it can be a healthy place to vent, put all of your salt there.
-
@the-green-death I was about to post something similar. The situation doesn't seem to have really changed... Most of the top sellers in Japan are either already licensed, or have a lot of volumes out (most notoriously, DAL and DxD), which has been noted as a larger risk than the English publishers are generally willing to take. Yen seems to have priority on Kadokawa stuff, which also doesn't help.
So it makes sense to start licensing new series with only 1 volume out.
-
Sol Press Licenced H(hentai)-Novel(NEVER DONE BEFORE) called : Busy Wizard:This Warlock Just Wants to Provide for His Wives (Working title-could be changed)
Publisher : King Novels (Paradigm)
Status : 5 volumes in Japan at present
-
@theredjet 5 volumes, I wonder how many years it will take Sol Press to release them. Not to mention that new volumes will come out, too. Honestly, rather than them licensing new things I'd prefer they get their shit together and properly release what they already have.

This post is deleted! -
I don't really want to begrudge other people their opinions, especially since I don't really have much skin in the game when it comes to what's available in English, but to me Urasekai Picnic, Altina, and Kicked out of the Party for Being a Girl are all a really huge deal.
I usually sit by and ho-hum and roll my eyes whenever I see new license announcements because, by and large, my tastes don't seem to align with what English-speaking audiences want. To see three titles I think are top-notch get licensed all at once is really surprising. I'm happy to see JNC making somewhat adventurous choices alongside more conventional ones.
-
Speculating about future batches of licenses, I would say they are likely to be similar in terms of popularity profile as this batch. The English light novel market has been growing to the point that many of the popular/obvious picks are already taken; or if they aren't there is likely some reason why which we're not necessarily privy to.
I also think some of the older "big" titles haven't really been selling well for the English publishers.
So what's left is more out of the way and newer titles, which accordingly won't generate as much immediate hype as some of the batches of pickups earlier in the market growth. We might still get a few "bigger" older titles in future batches as the English side improves relations with the JP publishers, but I'd say the low hanging fruit has already been taken.

the sub-license for The Combat Baker and Automaton Waitress from Bookwalker is interesting, too.
What is this supposed to mean by the way? Wasn't Combat Baker translated by Bookwalker ages ago? I think I've already seen like 8 translated volumes at least? Did they transfer the license to JNC? Or will it just be now "streamed" through JNC in addition to the usual bookwalker e-books?
And what's up with Altina? Is it a TOM collaboration too like Beatless or have some people just gone crazy?
Sam or his right hand really should finally make an official post explaining everything that went down at AX because currently ANN seems to be the only source of information but their article on JNC at AX is so atrocious that it only makes everyone more confused.

JNC will be allowed to stream the Combat Baker LNs on their site for subscribers to read.
It will follow the same format of weekly uploads and then they will release the ebook for purchase on additional platforms outside of BW, such as Kindle & Nook, etc. (there was no mention of premium editions)
Once JNC catches up to the latest volume in Japan, BW holds exclusive rights to the book sales for 6 months (the time period is subject to change) and then JNC can start streaming the newest volume.
And what's up with Altina? Is it a TOM collaboration too like Beatless or have some people just gone crazy?
It does not involve Altina, only Beatless.
Sam or his right hand really should finally make an official post explaining everything that went down at AX because currently ANN seems to be the only source of information but their article on JNC at AX is so atrocious that it only makes everyone more confused.
Since this is the final day of AX (and it is just as crazy as all the others) I am sure more official communication will follow later.
-
@novurdim Combat Baker was translated by BW and released exclusively through them. This partnership means that JNC will now stream Combat Baker (I think) as well as release ebooks outside of Bookwalker. I'm not 100% clear on whether we'll have premium ebooks, but at the very least you'll be able to buy it from a retailer other than Bookwalker.
Altina is not a TOM collaboration, it was just the last license announced so I think the ANN person got mixed up.
Here's someone's tweet thread regarding the announcements: https://twitter.com/kunaldes/status/1147666821778010113
You can also watch the archived stream from yesterday: https://www.pscp.tv/w/1DXxyNaYqeNKM
Note that this stream is missing the first couple minutes, so maybe watch the stream while following along with the above twitter recap.
-
The only thing missing from that stream is the introductions at the start of then panel and the mention that JNC is now working with Futabasha, everything else is mentioned/shown.
-
The ANN article is also missing that both the LN and manga of Demon Lord, Retry were licensed.
