Arata Miyako is a new government worker assigned to the Shinjuku Ward Office's "Nighttime Regional Relations" department. Each of Tokyo's 23 wards has one such department, which were established to solve paranormal and occult-related events. Arata can understand non-human speech that no one else understands, and he encounters a youkai at Shinjuku Gyoen park that calls him Abe no Seimei — the name of a historical Japanese occultist and diviner. Why I suggested it
Reading Thompson reminded me of this series as they are both urban fantasy, though this series is more about traditional folkloric creatures such as yokai, rather than urban legends. I watched the anime from 2019 and really enjoyed it despite it not being the greatest animation ever, and I suspect the original is probably better than the anime. Although it’s shoujo, it would have cross-over appeal if you like urban fantasy. (Some sources say it was in Asuka which is a shoujo magazine and others in Newtype, not sure if it was in both for the full run or what.)It finished last year, and it’s been a few years since the anime, so it feels like it got overlooked in the English market.
