It's possible the small chalices are partially filled locally before winter. It's unlikely though because it seems like they're handed out randomly from a sack rather than each lord getting the same one back

I can't remember where it is said exactly but don't giebes pour they're own mama into the land as well? If so, they probably use the chalices because there is no sense making their own magic tool for that purpose when they already have one from the temple and if the chalice was unnecessary the dedication ritual wouldn't be necessary because the blue priests could just do it that way (at least in the case of priests with sufficient mana to do it all at once without having to save up like Rozemyne or Ferdinand)

It was mentioned they do so when they're returned during spring prayer. The Giebe also performs the ceremony instead of a priest, who only do so for the central regions controlled by the Aub.

We don't know if they do so throughout the year. I say it's unlikely because when they're handed back to them it seems as if a random one is removed from a sack, though this may not be the case in reality.

It makes perfect sense for them to have/use their own tools. Their mana has uses other than filling the land.

@poisonedbite Umm, not as such. It has to be an archducal candidate since they're the only ones taught how to use the creation magic, but requiring "access" to the foundation is a bit more of a stretch. Technically the only one with direct access to the foundation is Sylvester. What Ferdinand and the others have access to is the terminal in the castle, but whether that constitutes "access" to the foundation is more open to interpretation.

@legitpancake That may have kicked off a quantum dimensional crossover event. The multi-quofs are from different realities, connected by that common electricity-surge incident, and quof dutifully ensures that each version gets independent credit for work completed.

@xdrfiredogx Risky upvote if I ever saw one...

I'd say that it's more that parallel Quofs translate their version of Bookworm, then our @Quof converts it to our Bookworm (like, for example, the Quof that happens to translate about the boy who was born to a female soldier and a male dyer)

    Hello,

I added a mod note to the opening post of this topic, to (hopefully) avoid any confusion on if J-Novel Club has licensed this book.

    Thank you

    Hello,

So after sleeping on it (literally) and reading the feedback in this topic, we will proceed with the suggested spoiler policy.

If someone makes a new topic and does not specify in the title it involves future content, or in the opening post that future content is present, I will treat them as volume discussion topics and remove future spoiler content.

Now that being said, unless someone specifically says the topic is a no spoiler zone, if someone wants to drop some ambiguity in a spoiler tag, I will leave that be, if they are direct about it I will do what I usually do, delete, and send a DM.

Please see the previously mentioned thread for an example, as I have edited some posts.

How about "forbidden archive" then? Sounds a bit more grand and mysterious than "forbidden book storage room."

Just wanted you to know that I made sure that this is used in this latest part.

F: Well it mostly just takes care of itself.
    M: ...What?
F: After investing enough mana over sufficient period of time the baby appears before the mother as a complete being.
    M: ...Excuse me?
F: Well obviously it's a little more involved. I presume the mother uses a magic circle of some sort to teleport the infant out of the belly. How else would you extract it from their person?
    M: Oh Ferdinand. Oh no...

So does Ferdinand think that dying during childbirth is due to a teleportation error, or... X3

Nobles probably don't die during childbirth very often considering all the magic tools they have and considering that Ferdinand didn't seem to think it carried much risk when the grey priests asked him about it, and it is pretty clear that even Ferdinand doesn't know that much about commoners. We have heard a lot about nobles dying of illness, but the only instance I can think of where we have been told a noble died in the proximity of giving birth was Bezewanst and Veronica's mother, who was ill throughout the pregnancy with Bezewanst and may or may not have actually died during childbirth, I can't remember if that was ever specified.

Your insightful and I believe accurate comment killed @ShibariUsagi's joke more thoroughly than a childbirth-telefrag could a noble mother. XD

In the last chapter Cornelius said that the Grun smells awfully. That's indeed not something an archnoble daughter should use as reference for her highbeast.

Honestly, I would have preferred if she had made a Shumil highbeast, since she is so often compared to one and since that would be a lot more acceptable by nobles standards.

Seriously, Ferdinand could have just shown her what a shumil looks like.

Yep. And Rozrmyne could even adapt the ears to act as windshield wipers. A highbeast even more cute and useful than lessy.

@tube said in [CORRECTIONS] - Bookworm Part 3 Volume 5:

I think I found an inconsistency in P3V5 chapter Illgner's Harvest Festival.

When I entered the winter mansion, Fran was standing by the room normally used by blue priests.

โ€œThere was an urgent matter in the side building that I needed to address. I wanted to ask the gray priest planning to get married how he felt.โ€

Both refer to the same place. Asking from Hiroto he said that both terms are the same in Japanese and it is a hard term to translate. For consistency's sake I think here "winter mansion" should most likely be "side building" because the conversation seemed to take place where blue priests stay during spring prayer and harvest festival rather than in the winter mansion for commoners and the English translation differentiates between the two.

For reference, original term used here is - https://jisho.org/word/้›ขใ‚Œ.

This is not the one I'm referring to. This is what I wanted when I went searching, and then I found the spoiler filled one instead. On the whole, this tree is better too.

Ah, that eternal debate about which is worth more, technical knowledge or artistic skill.

that we are having this discussion is proof that Quof is doing a GREAT job interpreting (yes interpreting not merely translating) Bookworm.

as an aside - there have been other fora (forums?) about this topic
here, and here, and here , as well as within several fora about specific series/volumes.

as well as discussions of jargon/figurtive language use (in english)
such as here (where I'll self-quote)

"I don't think we should go too far down that rabbit hole
English is chock-a-block full of terms that come from some particular jargon, or literary reference, that became mainstream, part of our cultural zeitgeist. You can't cut and run from these figures of speech, nor is there a hard and fast rule (IMHO) of where you can strip them without keeping meaning. If you try, You'll end up keeling over from the frustration. Sometimes these terms are shorthand for something much more complicated to describe, and the common use bears little relevance to the origin of the phrase. Seriously though, even in a fantasy setting, the translator is conveying meaning to an audience that speaks modern English. If the author is describing a sheet of scrambled eggs, folded around a filling of cheese. A translator can call it an omelet, even if the setting isn't French."

    Localizations/Hororifics in or out?

I think having multiple versions that readers could toggle between was even discussed (sounds like double work to me)

in my opinion (mostly aligns with @b-scot-morgan) keep them if the setting is Japanese/Japan-like, or if removing them takes away from the story - I am not a Japanese speaker - I would not get/or could easily misinterpret the significance or nuance in honorifics/figurative language if literally translated. That being said; it's a tightrope-walk on the part of the editorial/translation team. in Japanese settings (say High-school romcoms) I want honorifics and as much colorful cultural flavor as I can get- in those settings, Takoyaki should not be 'octopus balls' (should be defined in context - not translated) in the Bookverse Japanese-style honorifics would (in my opinion) not add anything to the story and would likely detract from the flow (and immersion in a medieval European/Germanic-like setting)- we are told that nobles often use figurative speech and Quof has done a great job keeping much of that language vague (as the author seems to have intended) - it is up to the reader to figure out that 'climbing the high staircase' = dying, for example.

Last weekend I spend with a friend on our traditionel "culture and nature" summer days. In a museum shop I found a book about the history of bookmaking and thanks to the bookworm series I got super excited, bought the book and am reading it since then. I would not have been interested in so many details otherwise. Some tidbits: the linseed oil needs to get boiled to work as a base for printing colour. And Gutenberg invented a way to manufactur metal lettertypers in series by using molds.

Perhaps Anastasius will make a fluffy unicorn driveable highbeast.

What if Eglantine whirls at a concert where Ferdinand plays? Maybe both men and women would faint. Then she could go on to have a career as a rock star.
