[ROUNDUP] Post-AX standings shakeup!
-
I was going to do one about every month, but with AX so close I decided it made more sense to wait and see what licenses got picked up first. And wow, what an AX! Lots of popular books were given homes, so the standings are quite different from the last roundup! For a quick look at all licenses that came from AX, check the AX topic; for JNC's licenses, go to the announcements page.
Something released in English
As a reminder, this category consists of light novels that have an adaptation of some sort officially available in English! This almost always means an anime, but there are a few cases of the mangas getting picked up.- Chivalry of a Failed Knight (46 votes)
- Problem Children are Coming from Another World, Aren't They? (39 votes)
- How to Raise a Boring Girlfriend (33 votes)
- Campione! (32 votes)
- Gamers! (31 votes)
With a dominant lead, the popular magical high school battle/romance Chivalry of a Failed Knight still hasn't gotten any license love, so you'll have to rely on Fate/Grand Order for your cries of "STELLAAAAAAA!!"
Immediately after, we have a swap from the previous roundup with Mondaiji taking over the #2 spot while Gamers! falls to 5th. Mondaiji is an older series with a stable of steady fans, while Gamers! is more of a newcomer whose anime is starting to fade a bit from recent memory, so this change makes some amount of sense.
Stealing into the middle spots are two drastically different series! How to Raise a Boring Girlfriend got a lot of popularity from its 2 anime seasons starring the extremely meta cast and their surprisingly relatable and complicated friendships and interactions. Will Rinri-kun ever get to wax poetic about his fetishes in prose?! We shall see!
Finally, at #4, we have Kusanagi Gotou, wielder of divine powers and magnet for hot women. With this action/adventure series complete at a solid 21 volumes as well as a short but generally beloved anime adaptation from 2012, Campione! is a series that sees steady requests as well.
Only Japanese or "unofficially" translated
- Tensei Shitara Ken Deshita (34 votes)
- Haken no Kouki Altina (32 votes)
- Wortenia Senki (29 votes)
- Isekai Nonbiri Nouka (28 votes)
- Shinwa Densetsu no Eiyuu no Isekaitan (27 votes)
- Kenja no Deshi wo Nanoru Kenja (26 votes)
- Isekai Ryouridou (24 votes)
- Otome Game no Hametsu Flag shika nai Akuyaku Reijou ni Tensei shite shimatta... (24 votes)
With the monster Slave Elf Bride getting licensed by JNC, fighting it out for the top are the previous #2 and #3 series, this time with Tensei Shitara Ken Deshita (Sworddad) narrowly beating out Haken no Kouki Altina (Sword Princess)! See Shishou strive to become the best sword dad and curry cook he can be! See him make telekinetic hands to smother Fran with affection! Laugh as they slaughter and maim stupid idiots who try to beat her up or steal her stuff!
Altina is also a staple favorite, with its alt. history war story full of fighting and scheming and dense bookworks gettin' all the ladies. Fingers crossed for this one, since JNC has an in with Kadokawa now! As previously mentioned, this series has the same author as How NOT to Summon a Demon Lord and same illustrator as The Magic in this Other World is Too Far Behind!
These next series are all appearing in review for the first time!
In 3rd, Wortenia Senki starts as your typical hero summoning story, except the hero finds out he's about to be enslaved by his summoners, and he also happens to be some kind of martial arts expert. After escaping from the castle, he goes on the run and, naturally, rescues two hot slave women who immediately become enamored with him and become his slaves. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
4th is the lackadaisical Isekai Nonbiri Nouka, starring Some Guy who dies early and his wish is to play Harvest Moon in real life. God gives him a
Golden HoeUniversal Farming Tool, which allows him totill 6 squares directly in front of himdo actual anything, and he ends up making a farm, then small village in the middle of a forest, attracting magical beasts and horny vampires and angels and elves who take turns giving him "nightly service." ...it's actually pretty fun and not really ecchi at all.At 5th, we have Shinwa Densetsu no Eiyuu no Isekaitan, a story about a summoned hero who completes his mission and returns to the modern world while losing all of his memories of his summoning. He later gets summoned back to the same world, except 1000 years in the future. Sounds quite interesting and, clearly, popular, so I'd love to read it!
Running out of prepositions, in 6th place, Kenja no Deshi wo Nanoru Kenja, "The sage called herself the disciple of the sage." Another "trapped in a video game maybe" series à la Log Horizon, except this guy randomly changed the appearance of his character from "wizened Gandalf" to "lovely loli" right before he got trapped, and his character is super famous, so no one believes that it's actually the same person. Rather standard setup, "this is the world of the game except everything is real and now I need to run around and figure shit out."
Tied for 7th are Other World Cooking and Bakarina! Not 100% sure what Isekai Ryouridou consists of other than "I went to another world and cooked some stuff" since the manga isn't that far yet (there are dark-skinned elves, that's about all I know), but Bakarina/Destruction Flags Otome is probably the novel I personally want licensed the most next :o Katarina hits her head as a young girl and suddenly realizes she used to be a Japanese teenager and that she's been reincarnated as the villain in an otome game! Since all of her character's endings are death or exile, she frantically tries to change her future... except she's a complete idiot who can't read the mood, so she pretty much just goes around making a huge mess of everything. The story is hilarious but also extremely sweet and heartwarming. Please vote more for it! :)
That concludes this time's roundup! As usual, if you want to boost your favorite series, or just get more people interested in it, post more in its topic about new books or drama CDs or whatever, just get those conversations rolling! If you have any questions about why a series is popular or whether you might like it, post those as well!
I'm also looking for suggestions on how to generate discussion for some of the less popular topics. While some of them may just be unpopular, it's also true that there are (as of this post) 150 (!) different suggestion topics, so it can be extremely overwhelming to try and browse through each one. Not all suggestion topics are made equal, either; I try to write my own synopses instead of copying from other websites, and I also add stuff like why I like a series, my favorite lines, etc, but not everyone does that, so some series that deserve more love might just not get advertised well. Furthermore, I just don't think we get a ton of votes day-by-day across the forum, so it would be good in general to get more series into the spotlight.
Some possibilities I've randomly brainstormed:
- Roundups by genre
- Vote for series to get spotlight discussions
- Use a random picker to focus on random series
Anyway, let me know if you have thoughts or suggestions!
Wise words are like arrows flung at your forehead. What do you do? Why, you duck of course.

Bit sad to see Gamers fall but at least its in the top 5, hopefully it get licensed eventually.
-
We need a real life focused gamer based LN at some point.
Gamers.
Tomozaki.
You Thought There Was Never a Girl Online (Netoge?).I do wonder if there's another title that people will throw their full weight behind again like Classroom of the Elite. Maybe Rakudai / Chivalry of A Failed Knight?
-
I'd honestly prefer Netoge to Gamers, myself. :)

Agreed on Tomozaki. Gamers, interestingly, had more votes than Classroom on the last roundup, though that only reflects our little JNC subculture.

The dream is a title of my suggestions makes the list!
(Maoyuu Maou Yuusha is the closest I got lol) -
@bloodygaikotsu Your Kokoro Connect got licensed though :o that's probably better than simply making it on the list lol. In terms of most suggestions-to-licenses, though, Hyperion and Aruseus are tied at 2 apiece :P
-
@myskaros
That was some kind of dumb luck (After all, I made the topic after hints were announced lol)
Maybe, I am really a lucky person while I don't know it (I kept jumping up and down when I saw the announcement on the twitter stream lol )- I usually make topics for titles that I feel like they deserve some love here so upvotes kinda make me feel like I am doing my job as missionary lol

Here is an idea; create an up-vote to time ratio for the suggested series. some example would be:
Chivalry of a Failed Knight - 47(up-votes):2(months) or 23.5 upvotes per month
I’m a NEET but When I Went to Hello Work I Got Taken to Another World - 21:2 or 10.5 upvotes per month
Scrapped Princess - 10:2 or 5 per month
This can add a second type where we see the fastest growing popularity and we can see what gained or lost some of its popularity or momentum. there is the example of Mondaiji and Gamers! switching places here as the OP states.

That's just since the sub-forum went up. I've requested a lot more stuff which did get licensed before the license request sub-forum popped up. Like Isekai Genius, Unwanted Undead Adventurer, Arifureta, and Lazy Dungeon Master. :3 I assume Hyperion also requested a lot of stuff too.
-
Aruseus has me beat by a long shot since I only joined this March. I only requested two on the old thread before this sub-forum started. But I was pretty excited that two of my requests were picked up nonetheless : )
Btw @myskaros I like your ideas to spotlight different series since we have so many to look at, it is overwhelming. Maybe if someone makes a post on the Light Novel subreddit, we could get more people's attention too than just this small community. But then again, not everyone will want to create an account to vote or make a comment. It's just an idea.
