Top 10 novel licences you wish to see in 2019

I see you're more infatuated with older series especially adventure ones. (not exactly, my thing but stuff I may read if they are out)

It's funny how 4 of us mentioned 29 completely different series...
I want almost all of yours, probably some I'd love to see more than some on my list, but again, I like to stay in the dark on drama, romance, and mystery / horror if I can. Fantasy / comedy, there's a bit less to spoil.
The only one I'm iffy about is GATE (I watched a bit too much of the anime to go in blind, but I'd be happy for those that want it; I think it's got some sketchy pro imperialist / pro JSDF / anti-DIET (?) stuff in it too, but I don't think it doing well here is really going to impact anything politically / platform wise).

-
Alderamin on the Sky: because I loved the anime and I want to know the rest of the story. Also, I'm all for more military/war/strategy light novels (a favorite genre of mine). Complete at 14 volumes.
-
Lord Marksman and the Vanadis: copy and paste the reason I want it from above. It would have the ecchi content that'd help sell it too for those that like that. Complete at 18 volumes.
-
Seishun Buta Yarou Series: I knew I'd like this series since it's similar to the Monogatari series, which I like too. But basically, I'd take any contemporary romance series, whether rom-com or drama. Bonus points if it includes adults but at this point I'd take anything. This genre is way too underrepresented and I'd die for more.Licensed! -
Shiki: Again, another one I want because I loved the anime. I wouldn't say I'm a huge horror fan, but there are those that draw me in because the story is just that good. Shiki is one of them. And it's a relatively short series (2 or 5 volumes), though the books are apparently long and would be difficult to translate.
-
Fate/Zero: Loved the anime, would love to read the original source material. It's also a short, complete series at 4 volumes. Gen Urobuchi is known for writing Madoka Magica and Psycho-Pass among others.
-
Kamisama no Goyounin: I loved Natsume's Book of Friends and Mushishi, so I know I'll love this calming, slice of life/touch of supernatural series where the MC travels across Japan to grant Gods' wishes.
-
Kimi to Boku no Saigo no Senjou, Aruiwa Sekai ga Hajimaru Seisen: because I'm interested in having more romance series brought over and this would be a good one since it's combined with fantasy and war and has beautiful art on the covers.Licensed! -
Kusuriya no Hitorigoto: I like a good mystery series too especially if it's not the typical murder mystery, and this one seems like it'd be a great relaxing, episodic one similar to Hyouka which I love. And it's set in a historical setting, which is something we're lacking over here.
-
Oishii Veranda: I desperately want more romance light novels in English and my need for a one with adult characters and does not contain any fantasy, supernatural, or sci-fi elements whatsoever. Not to mention it looks like a relaxing, slice of life series that I think would suit JNC.
-
Bokutachi no Remake (Remake Our Life!): I'd like it because it's a rom-com with adult characters, which we could always get more of. That it placed highly on Kono Light Novel ga Sugoi is a bonus.
-
Saigo no Isha wa Sakura wo Miagete Kimi wo Omou: This sounds like a very thought-provoking, poignant read. On which side would you fall if you had a terminal illness: accept your death or fight it to the very end? One of those dilemmas that falls in the gray area, with no right or wrong answer. Complete at one volume with a two volume sequel.
-
Unnamed Memory: Frog-kun on Twitter made it sound like an excellent romance-adventure series.
In sum, I'd love more variety of genres brought over. Romance, drama, mystery, war/military, shoujo, adventure fantasy, etc. Anything other than isekai and slice of life fantasy. Btw, shout out to @DoubleMangekyo for listing 3 of my license suggestion posts, 4 counting Chaika : )

I added links above to mine. There's a few I was sure had a topic, but didn't find anything (the points into defense Shield Heroine one and the Laws of Physics one).

**Seishun Buta Yarou Series
Want! (Though I'm staying in the dark on it purposely).
**Shiki
Want (though I did watch the anime, so that always makes me more hesitant, but I'd read it)!

this
Terror Infinity,
Dreadful Radio
Dungeon Defender
Your and My Asylum
Green Skin
Possessing Nothing
Goblin KingdomThese are all pretty edgy titles, most of the mcs in these novels are also physically weak but overcome obstacles using their wit. The rest Goblin Kingdom, Possessing nothing and terror infinity start week for entire volume but eventually get real strong not the strongest.
Almost all of the titles have 100+ chapters fan translated -
In no specific order, with links to the request thread if already existing:
- Sagrada Reset
- Alderamin on the Sky
- Bokurano - Alternative
- Beautiful Bones: Sakurako's Investigation
- Nogi Wakaba is a Hero (Amazon.jp link)
- Boogiepop volume 7+
- Kino no Tabi (license rescue)
- Hakata Tonkotsu Ramens
- Garden of Sinners (Kara no Kyoukai)
- Humanity has Declined
Guess I should actually create a request thread for Hakata Tonkotsu Ramens and NoWaYu at some point…
-
Are most of these Chinese novels?
(& some are licensed) -
Boukyaku Tantei Series
Kamisu Reina SeriesWould love the Forgetful Detective novels and the Bakemonogatari manga. Please Vertical!
I'd go for another Eiji Mikage series since I have/am getting Empty Box and Masquerade.Sakurako-san
I didn't like the ending of the anime, so I'd love to find out what happens. It's like Bones the light novel, so I'd read it.
Altina the Sword Princess
I've requested this from Seven Seas a couple times. Looks good. Want it for the war/strategy aspect.
Ambition of Oda Nobuna
Wouldn't mind reading it despite it being isekai because of its war/strategy/historical aspect.
-
Really just have one series I want licensed. Would make my year to see Highschool DxD get licensed. My hopes are pretty low though.
-
Completed stuff rather than Oneshots. What's burning me out are series I'm really enjoying just never getting additional volumes despite not being completed. Stuff like:
- Mixed Bathing in Another Dimension - No volume released in Japan since July 2017.
- Walking My Second Path in Life -No volume since December 2016.
- Amagi Brilliant Park - No volume since June 2016.
- Reborn as a Vending Machine, Now I Wander the Dungeon - No volume since February 2017.
- Strongest Gamer: Let's Play in Another World - No volume since February 2016.
- Clockwork Planet - No volume since December 2015.
- [New Life+] Young Again in Another World - On In-Definite Hiatus and low chance of ever returning to the English market even if it finishes.
-
I’m pretty happy with just having it go like it does currently as there are books I think I’ll like a lot (Amagi Brilliant Park) that I don’t end up liking that much and others I have no expectations for (such as Cooking with Wild Game) that I end up loving. This tells me I can’t trust my instincts in the area of Light Novel predictions.
That said I would really like Gargantia and would like to read Gundam: Unicorn, which I think would make a better book than anime.
Beyond that I’d pick by authors. I tend to follow authors more than stories. Okuda, Mikage, Urobuchi etc. are all writers who have Light Novels our is love to read.
I’d love for non-LN mystery author Higashino get more translations (I want everything he’s done to be out). More Ryu Murakami too. I’m super interested in reading Banana Yoshimoto’s essays (especially the one on the occult). There’s lots more of that stuff I want.
-
@bloodygaikotsu they are a mix of 4 Korean novels, 2 Chinese and 1 Japanese. I found them really good at least on par to Grimgar, Faraway Paladin and Rokka no Yuusha. None of the Korean LN are licenced, and I believe qidian only translates from the WN.
However Terror Infinity is a translation of the LN, it's available for free to read on wuxiaworld.com, I don't think it can ever be officially licenced in the west since it breaks several IPs, like resident evil, alien, the mummy, and several others movies.

That's a good one I hadn't thought of. I enjoyed the anime and would like to read more.
-
@renofury
wuxiaworld.com is official tho, u know. -
Yes they are, they publish their translated volumes on Kindle, However they didn't do that for Terror Infinity. I think even if it is officially licensed they would have trouble monetize it since every volume takes place in a different horror movie story. After volume 15 I noticed the translator trying to alter movie names and character names maybe they could retro-con the other volumes too. I have no inside information on their situation but I think its tough to get this released as a book.
Still it is a very recommended title if you like action mystery thrillers, and all 20+ volumes are freely available to read.

Now that Mushoku Tensei is licence, aside from Bookworm and Sevens i'm mostly happy with what we have. Most of my top is either serie which would need a miracle, individual volume or serie i would be happy if they're licence but it's not too probematic if they're not.
1 Shinsekai yori: it would be fantastique but aside from JNC picking it as a one shot type novel i don't really see it being licence and since one shot licence are kind of random it's hard to see it happend. It could be pick by Vertiacal since it's barelya LN tho
2 Anything from the nasuverse (Fate, kara no kyoukai, Tsukihime,...): it seem like they're really hard to licence, it's sad i would love to read Strange fake, as well as zero and Kara no kyoukai.
3 Nidome no Yuusha: the best revenge isekai so far.
4 Sevens: A good harem fantasy, where the harem is really a part of the story and can be a real problem at time. The setting is also quite interresting with a simple but good story. The last vol of the WN was kind of mediocre tho i hope the LN do better
5 Ascendance of a bookworm: A really good isekai where modern knowledge is usefull without making the world and his inhabitant feel stupid.
6 The faraway paladin vol6: it will likely come out one day since the serie is popular enough and being adapt into (a bad) manga. I just hope we don't have to wait for too long.
7 Kono sekai ga game da to ore dake ga shitte iru: it's a great transport into a video game word novel, where the twist is that the game is a Dark Soul like MMORPG with sadistic but terrible devlopers. The MC using bug to progress. It's mostly a good comedi.
8 Medaka box Novel: NisiOisiN novel are quite popular, so it's not totaly impossible that we get it. Well i feel like i'm more likely to won the loterie than see those translated tho.
9 Can't a great hero be jobless: Grimgar's spin off, that all there's to say about it.
10 More than 3 Volumes of "So i'm a spider so what" and "The empty box and Zeroth Maria" but once again i should likely get start on the loterie.

There are too many so I'll just type out what comes to mind first. In no particular order :
- Know (novel)- Mado Nozaki
- Uchoten Kazoku (novel) - Morimi Tomihiko
- Usotsuki Mii-kun to Kowareta Maa-chan (LN) - Hitoma Iruma
- Seikai series (novel)- Hiroyuki Morioka
- Kaidantou series - Yutaka Kouno
- Babylon (novel)- Mado Nozaki
- Run with the Wind (novel) - Shion Miura
- Disco Detective - Otaro Maijo
- Phenomeno (LN) - Hajime Ninomae
- Hirakanai (LN)- Eiji Mikage
-
I see it was etched in your brain that you can't help but saying it first thing in the list lol
There's only one series that I don't know but I'm +1-ing here lol
Hopefully, we can scratch a few of them in 2019 (Especially since Babylon is getting an anime) -
hey out of all the licensing suggestions posted on the forums - anyway to see which had the most votes ?

@jon-mitchell Sure. Go to https://forums.j-novel.club/category/13/licensing-suggestions, then click on the Sort By button and select Votes (at the top right).
