@saffire Ahh thanks. Did not see this posting. And puh, was wondering where I should get it if it doesn't get a reprint. Funny that I see 20-30 listings for Banner of the Stars 4-6 on ebay but none for 1-3...

@Rahul-Balaggan Thank you so much for getting back to me so quickly! I was so used to seeing volumes back to back I took it for granted! Can't wait to see the next one :)

It is the downside to catching up close to the Japanese releases. When a new series comes in, we are all happy knowing that everything currently released is licensed (normally, I assume exceptions can happen). But once we catch up, we never know when or if a new book will get licensed or when the translator will be free again. We know that J-Novel wants to continue, but so many pieces to the eBook!

@Terabyte said in Chillin' In Another World names:

@lighthawk96 In this case, the name change was appropriate for an English audience to keep the joke intact, IMO. Changing it back because the (JP) spoken audio will sound too different is what I don't get... I don't care about that kind of thing at least. 🙄

      Yup!
...this is kind of a cheap excuse!
How many times the audios said "oni-chan/-san, etc (big /-dear brother)" and we can read the character name (surename) instead in the subs!

So, doesn't really matter if in the anime they said "charun" if then the subs they can change it and keep with the initial "Tia" … to match with the actual translation.

(well, not now that they are using the original name).

@myskaros said in Any news about „Great Cleric“ Volume 11?:

@Zicco1 Unfortunately, "light novel" is simply a marketing term; it has no strict definition separating it from other types of books other than "is published under a label specifically for 'light novels.'" There are light novels that are 500 or more pages, and there are light novels without anime covers or insert art. Yes, light novels tend to be "anime-like stories in prose form" but other than that there's nothing special about them.

Is that so? I was under the impression that light novels usually were 30-50K words. I know of an exception (quite a big one at that) where the book was almost 900 pages long. But aren't books usually divided into light novels, novels or novella?

I'm sorry for your loss... that's rough.

I recently finished my first read through of the series and yeah, I can see how it would be just the right kind of series to help... serious enough to hold your attention and yet light hearted enough that it doesn't demand your attention.

Now if you'll excuse me, I've got to go cuddle my kitty, who turned 14 last month...

@CrimsonScholar said in About Demon King Daimao illustrations:

@Geezer-Weasalopes Oh, that's nice. Though, question, where exactly do I find those textless illustrations after buying them? For one, I have in general difficulty finding where colored illustrations are. (I only see the cover and the black and white illustrations for light novels while reading them)

For example, I have bought Reborn to Master the Blade V1 but I can't find the colored illustrations for it anyway. (the ones with text)

      You've downloaded the book, yes?
Not the prepub stuff, but using the download link from the item in your User Library? (The prepub stuff never has the color illustrations beyond the cover illustration, whether you have purchased the boo or not.)
You have to do that and then open the epub using an ebook reader capable of doing so.

Bear in mind that JNC ended up shifting all the color images to the end of their epubs to reduce the number of Amazon takedowns; the folks getting their jollies by reporting things for violating Amazon's amorphous 'community standards' can't be bothered to purchase the works but use what's in the Kindle preview as their justification...and some of those images were awful convenient to them.

So you need to purchase the book directly from JNC at this site, download the purchased copy, and open up the downloaded file and go to the end of the book to find the color illustrations.
The black and white will be where they should be within the text.

If you purchase the book via a different site it won't contain the bonus content, so for this it has to be purchased direct from JNC.

      Ah.
      Timing.
Welp, hopefully this wall of text will be of use to someone down the line!

The other nice thing about purchasing direct from JNC is that it'll be DRM free.

My understanding is that one of the reasons caught up series can take longer is that while for existing volumes they can do a contract for multiple volumes, Japanese publishers are understandably reluctant to sign a contract for a volume that isn't published yet. This means that for such volumes JNC will have to wait until the next time they are in Japan doing a deal with the publisher to get the rights for it after it has been published (or at least when publication in Japan is set in stone). JNC then might have to wait for the digital files with all the text and art to be sent over.

I also assume that there is a stronger incentive for JNC to be prompt for series where Japan is several volumes ahead to maintain momentum on a series where them being prompt allows JNC to publish more volumes in a year, especially as it means less time for translators and editors having to re-read past volumes to help ensure consistency. *

This also presumably means that when you have translators and editors busy with series that have multiple volumes to translate the series with single volumes have a lower priority and have to wait for their original translator and editor to become free or a new one to be found. Some translators work for multiple publishers so their availability might not even be in JNC's control. The longer the series, the more work it is to bring a new translator or editor on board, so waiting several months for people to be free can make a lot of sense.

(* There might also be higher priority for series that JNC knows or suspects is just about to have an anime adaptation, but I can only remember one instance where this was obvious, which if I am not mistaken was Smartphone where they translated at least 3 volumes without a pause.)

      Hello,

We have drifted quiet far off-topic.

I am going to lock this topic down since Volume 9 has started pre-publication.

I will also move the posts to a more appropriate topic.
